This is the best way to tape your parts.
I have been printing and taping big band charts all week in preparation for my first post-lockdown rehearsal with Pandemonium Big Band. You might think that the specific taping method is unimportant... but taping parts correctly makes a huge difference.
Elliot Deutsch is a professional composer/arranger based in Los Angeles, CA. He has written music for Arturo Sandoval, Take 6, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, The Kennedy Center Jazz Orchestra, and many others. Deutsch leads his own band, the Pandemonium Big Band which has recorded 11 performances remotely during the pandemic and featured special guests Bob McChesney (trombone), Nick Mancini (vibraphone) and YAYennings (trumpeter from Sparky Puppy).

Well, am getting ready to go back into a studio to hit a demo on one of the tunes from our musical and it had been so long I had to look up this vid to remember how to properly tape parts again! LOL! Thank you once again, Elliot!

A couple of details: with cheap scotch tape, it's important to have a little bit of tape folded over the edge of the paper; this helps durability as scotch tape tends to tear on the folding seam if it ends right at the edge of the paper. To get it "just right" it also helps to leave a gap of about a millimeter between the two papers being taped together; this helps make the taped fold "fold" better. I don't know a great way to deal with the static electricity that causes the paper to try to 'grab' the tape as I'm applying it.
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
Yes I agree. I didn’t mention the gap because it’s actually really tough to achieve.

I've learned so much from your videos. Thank you so much for helping me out. Do you think you can make a video on writing original melodies for big bands and small combos?
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
I am so glad that I can help you along! I am not sure how to teach writing original melodies. I don't have a specific method, beyond listening to tons of music that sounds how you want to emulate. I will definitely talk about writing for combos at some point. I'll add that to my 'future video ideas' list!

This is a good method. It will produce a part that will last a long time and looks totally professional. Taping odd numbered pages outside and even numbered pages inside as you show here is crucial. However, in many situations, you don't need such a heavy duty binding and running tape the whole length of the page is gonna be really slow. Three 2" pieces of tape, top, middle and bottom will do the job. It is important to do this with a big, heavy tape dispenser that lets you tear off a piece of tape quickly with one hand. Apply the tape diagonally (on the bias) because it is much more difficult to tear that way. The strongest, clearest, most long-lasting tape for sheet music is J-Lar by Permacell which can be ordered from library supply vendors. (20 year NYC arranger/copyist, plus 20 more years directing school bands.)

I’ll have to order a roll of that tape and try it out! Although I look young, I have 15 years experience as a professional arranger.

Use half inch 3M Micropore Paper Tape instead of Scotch Tape. Super cheap so very affordable, but so much better than Scotch tape and you don't need to use thicker paper. Also instead of using scotch tape to hold the pages together, you can get an artist sketch board, its basically a large clipboard with two metal clips to hold each paper. Some of them are very affordable under $20 so non pros can still use this method.

I started taping my charts a few months ago after read that quote from Maria Schneider about taping one on the front, one of the back. But for whatever reason I’ve been taping one on the back then one on the front wondering what the hell she was talking about “it doesn’t stick” nonsense. This makes much more sense and it’s great to see it clearly laid out in your video! Thanks Elliot!

I got the artist tape on your rec. and it works great. I had been using the medical tape you mention and it sucks in ways I won't go into here. Artist tape is the best I've found. Thanks.

I have a few of Bobby Darin's charts I received from Bob Rozario from his days with Bobby. Handwritten, thick 9½ x 13 cream colored paper and no tape. One long piece folded where it needs to be folded. If you ever want to see them I'll be glad to share.

I am sure those parts are beautiful. There is something magical about classic, hand engraved, big band charts. Despite what I showed in the video, I actually print my parts on tabloid size, 70 lb paper. The size is 11x17, which folds in half to 8.5x11. I still need to whip out the tape when the parts are more than 2 pages.

I find scotch tape turns brown and drops off. For this reason I use masking tape though it is true it makes the backs thick. I will look into artists tape which I have never heard of. PS This type of practical advice is very laudable.
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand Год назад
In my experience, scotch tape (clear plastic tape) breaks at the fold way before it turns brown. But it probably matter which specific brand you’re using. In my experience, the glue on masking tape turns to dust in less than a year. But if your experience is different, then use it. Masking tape is usually pretty thin (in a good way) and very fold-able.

@Elliot what is the size you use for Score and Parts? For the Score How many measures per system do you use? and for the parts how many measures per line do you use?. For paper what do you prefer white or yellowish? When the parts are going to be digital (iPad, tablet, etc) do you avoid repetition/jumping back and write in a top-down fashion? Thanks for your REALLY GOOD Material!!!!. PS: I've used the scotch tape method but instead of the glossy, I prefer to use the one which is more transparent and matte, so it is clean and looks better. Artist Tape is a nice touch. :)
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
That is a lot of questions in one! On parts I usually use 4 measures per system, unless the musical phrase has 5 or 6, then I make the stem have 5 or 6 measures. I prefer white paper, but I've heard good arguments for the yellowish paper too. As a rule of thumb, yellowish paper is easier to look at under bright stage lighting. So if you are writing concert music that will be read on a brightly lit stage, consider using yellowish paper. I will eventually do a full video on formatting music for tablets, but the short answer is: page turns are SUPER important. And never write a DS or DC unless the whole recapitulation is on that same page. Finally... I don't actually use scotch tape for my own parts ever. But in a pinch, the matte kind does look better!

I tape to the back of the page but I use packing tape. Scotch tape is fragile and tears easily.
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 2 года назад
You should tape on the outside of the folds. If you tape on the inside, the folds will be sticky.

In our bigband the majority is using a tablet for our sheet music (less heavy, always all parts available, easy to share notes, always enough light on stage, ...), Do you see that over there as well?
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
Yes. I use a tablet for many bands. But none of the LA big bands are on tablets, probably because you always have subs. It’s easier to just have old school, printed parts.
@wpbs
@wpbs 3 года назад
@@PandemoniumBigBand we just forward the exported parts (including notes) to our subs, but I guess paper sheet music will continue to be used still :)
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
I honestly prefer using tablets. But also Angeles just isn’t there yet. People send subs at the last minute, and if someone shows up to a gig without the right music downloaded it would be a big problem. When we get to a place where using tablets is common practice, then I would definitely do that!
@wpbs
@wpbs 3 года назад
@@PandemoniumBigBand well, I once e-mailed some missing parts (during a gig) to a sub during a long solo section, so that was only possible using tablets :p

Taping correctly is an art. 1/2 artists tape is the only way to go if you don't want to re-tape the plastic, Scotch, taped parts every year or two. Using artist tape with the artist tape dispenser. you get pretty good at accuratly pulling off an 11' piece of tape to put on the two pages of sheet music. Heavier weight paper a must when you use thicker artist tape. The thicker pound grading of paper is confusing to me. I've been using minimumuse. Musicians' appreciate the thicker paper especially playing outside. Cloths pins anyone?

Scotch tape doesn’t last. Use better tape ion the back of the pages.
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
That is completely true. But for students, scotch tape might be their only option. And in my experience artist tape is too thick to use on 20lb printer paper. It makes the folds unreasonably thick. If you are printing a piece of music that you wrote, I would invest in thick paper and artist tape. That music will last for YEARS in your folders.
@matthewsaxman1028

Or, ya know, print it like an actual professional - double sized paper with a fold, and if three pages are necessary, put the page turn at a multi-bar rest. Instead of this mess.
@PandemoniumBigBand
@PandemoniumBigBand 3 года назад
I do use large paper and fold it. But I thought this would be more useful for more people. Buying a large format printer is a big investment.

11x17 Printers are super expensive, epically if you want one that prints on thicker paper. Some of the cheapest ink jet printers like the HP 7740 go for $300 plus dollars. I think this video was aimed at more general audiences.

@@vicfirth1 I have never heard of any printer that can't handle the paper thickness/weight of standard published printed sheet music. So I have no idea what you mean by "11x17 Printers are super expensive, epically if you want one that prints on thicker paper"
