In this video, famous director/producer Quentin Tarantino introduces us to Kitano's world of Sonatine. He talks about it through his cinephile eye but also his distributor point of view as he was the distributor of several of Takeshi Kitano's films in the US through his company Rolling Thunder (and also other asian classics like Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express). He shares also his love for Japanese cinema.
The 2 parts (intro & outro) are gathered together here in this video.
Coming up next is a similar edit but for Chungking Express...Please subscribe to stay tuned !

I once read that Kitano is not a fan of Tarantino's movies. If I remember right, he thought it's just violence and not deep (don't nail me on this though). Anyway, I doubt he would appreciate a role in a Tarantino movie, when he dislikes his style. Imagine a film maker being directed by a film maker, that does everything the way he doesn't like.

I have never seen this. I really appreciate his respect toward Japanese films. Especially he knows a lot about movies in 70s and 80s. He is so right that “jingi” can’t be translated as “honor. ” he knows well.
@johnedwardkerr7814
@johnedwardkerr7814 Год назад
It's why in English it's called Battles without honor or humanity. Quentin Tarantino stole the Soundtrack from them and used it for all his slow-walks, explosions, and violence-stylized shots. QT could never host Wipeout and be anywhere near as cool as Takeshi's Castle!

It's kinda interesting how I didn't knew about him when I watched Takeshi's Castle as a kid on the TV. As expected, Tarantino. The scene where a killer fisherman throws flowers in the sky is introduced first. The reason why this movie becomes a "movie textbook" is how to use the "red" in the scene from here until the blood that Takeshi's subordinates are shot dead.

Takeshi Kitano had his mistress's picture exposed by paparazzi, and an angry Kitano and his crew stormed into the weekly magazine's office and beat up several reporters in the office. On June 10, 1987, Takeshi was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years. This was still before Kitano took the film.

Rolling Thunder Pictures was a short-lived film distribution company, set up under Miramax Films by Quentin Tarantino. It specialized on releasing independent, cult, or foreign films to theaters. The company was created in 1995 but closed in 1999.

@@crushed_oreos I remember buying the Rolling Thunder vhs releases of Chunking Express and Sonatine back in the day. This concept was done way too early, so many cult/genre boutique blu ray companies exist now, his company probably would've had some success had he done this later on
