Ventura local 70 years old. So many J tstories. But here’s one. Cica summer of 74 huge south swell hits the California coast Surfer Mag dedicates an issue to it and dubs the swell The Monster from New Zealand.I’m there with two buddies we crest the road at cracks and get our first glimpse perfect 10 to 12 feet A frames and heavy! There were two guys out that day that were dominating. Terry Fitzgerald and Wayne Lynch. They were in Santa Barb at the time promoting.a new wetsuit company called RipCurl.

Jalama where I learned to surf BACKSIDE in the raging South swell days of 1974-1975. On my 6'5" John Bradbury. Which I bought from my friend Paul Kemitnzer while working at Matties Tavern Los Olivos. I drove a 1966 and/or a 1967 VW Bug. Here for the next 16 years and El Capitan and the Ranch. Amen. Glory Days. And, all the Live Band OUTDOORS party's around Santa Barbara County. We didn't need Bars & permisson to live young lives in those days. RIP Mark Dickson and my Jalama Crew Days.

@@ethandysthe8523 Basically knowing someone to get on to the Ranch and or the Bixby Cojo ranch. You can easily walk on to the lower Ranch breaks of Zoomers and Razor Blades from Gaviota State Park. Walk along the railroad tracks to a crack well before the Ranch Gatehouse. Walk down to the beach, preferably a low tide, and walk about a mile on the beach ( legally) and paddle around one point of rocks And you will be within eyesight of Zoomers and Razors. During big Winter Swells these two places are firing with hardly anybody out. Especially Zoomers While not a point reef like Razors, it holds up massive long Reefs and giant walls alot like Sunset Beach in Hawaii. The strong early morning off shore winds produce unbelievably good waves. It's not for the faint of heart. And most Ranch owners never surf Zoomers. It's almost an identical set up to Bells Beach and Winki Pops. Good luck.Pick a day when El Cap point is firing. In the Winter. Go up to Gav and walk in. You will not believe your eyes..

I have seen this place really big and perfect many times. The bigger it gets the better, the paddle out just becomes impossible. Best I ever caught it was on a big southwest swell, I can remember 1st. and 2nd. cracks both looked like Pipe and Backdoor, and tarantulas was bowling and spitting so hard.

Brings back memories of telling my friends I can find a better way down than cracks. Walked 500 yards down to the left and tried to scale down the cliff only to get stuck half way down. Friends surfed in front of the cliff laughing for 45 mins until the ice plant I was grasping gave way. I did a panic leap and barley missed some rocks. Cracks is the best way down and also never trust an Ice Plant.

My wife and I had one of the choice camping spots there a few years ago. There was a nice 5' swell and real straight. Tarantula was quite good but guys were getting left after left in front of the crack. Their with their dogs were walking up the beach with backpacks and two boards. One dog was a Golden Retriever who sat their with it's eyes glued for their dad. Ranger Rick was still working and dialed us into the camp spot.

This is summer surf in point conception. In the winter Tarantula gets full impact from NW swell and is a huge peak with easy paddle-out and twenty- foot great white sharks in the kelp. In the winter when there is no swell, it is 10-15 feet with ice cream cold water and a sickening feeling from all the sharks.
@rvrrb
@rvrrb 4 года назад
twenty foot white sharks lurk off the surfline. Tarantula point in the winter gets up to thirty feet in a huge peak. I have lived to witness it.

Crazy over here in Huntington Beach right now, they have this contest going on and the waves are basically flat, maybe max 2 foot face every hour 8-2-2018. Also the sand bottom is packed with hordes of Mr. Stingray's friends!
@gmansworld7186
@gmansworld7186 6 лет назад
henryssurfshowcase, that sounds like the Atlantic Ocean. Years ago I was caught between the ocean, a stingray horde and the beach. I didn't know they were there till I stepped on one and felt it's flaps on my calf. I pissed off three of them that way heading to the beach. Lol.

Thanks for posting this. Love this whole place. Was lucky once and got to drive through those gates .... I remember seeing shots in Surfer Magazine and asking my big brother if he knew where it was... "Fucking Jalama little dude!" Hugh? What's a "Ha-lama"? 😎😉✌

Is it called Tarantula's because of the shoreline? There are two rock spines close to each other that when viewed from above look like fangs. October of 2000 I went up to Jalama to surf north of pt conception for my first time and walked way down to Tarantulas. Only one out. Building west swell maybe four feet overhead on the sets. Cold. I've surfed much bigger stuff in PV and La Jolla, but man Tarantulas just had a spooky vibe to it and you could easily get lulled into taking off too deep.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 6 лет назад
Great info Muttonbuster I did not know that? I have seen a few tarantulas myself personally up on that top beach cliff ledge. I was out one time by myself and friends on the beach around the corner small right cove point. It was very windy from the NNW side onshore and a little bit wind protected there. Anyways I was a little spooked also, then got bumped very hard on the bottom of my board, I did not see it, could have been a seal? I was out for awhile anyways, but that was enough for me to go in!

Current surging through on the outer reef with in between wave action, will pull you back into the impact zone and too deep, at times... I was out bodysurfing solo at 10-15' Hawaiian. I looked a little too closely at a 9'er - got caught inside of an macking and endless set, and though that I was gonna drown. One guy on the beach (unbeknownst to me, while I was in.the water...) said he was thinking about calling the Coast Guard, for a body recovery mission.
@mrkroeger

I thought it got its name due to all the tarantulas in the area. I saw many. Also rattle snakes.

T's + Cracks... if this was shot in the past week - a good example of why heading North is a great idea... Some smoking tubes to be had.

@anotherworldviewispossible
@anotherworldviewispossible 6 лет назад
henryssurfshowcase + That explains it. Jalama is always bigger than socal... but I'm guessing even Surf beach has been flat for a week or more.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 6 лет назад
That last SSW swell we got was fairly good, and then it went micro small for over a week now. That Surf Beach place is probably the best lately early morning wind swell but I hear people are getting eaten alive by Mr. Great White?
@anotherworldviewispossible
@anotherworldviewispossible 6 лет назад
henryssurfshowcase - Look at the date on the last 2 attacks - Avoid October... Sharks seem to have a consistent migratory schedule. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the same shark on both occasions... Itz a rivermouth spot... so sketchy for sure. I think if you avoid that week in October, you'll be ok. There are local surfers. I saw it one day, 12 years ago, going OFF at 3x overhead +. It looked like a lot of work, but super fun, running and reforming, super hollow too - and I thought T's would be better - so I backtracked... I'm still bummed that I made the wrong call. The lefts at T's were mostly closing-out (too much North, I think), and cracks was out of control... I surfed the rights at T's, but it wasn't ideal.

Hi MykeyOh, yes that’s me. Back in the 80’s was KROQ Radio 106.7 and Mars 103.1fm surf reports, Request Video KDOC 56 TV. In the 90’s I helped out Dallas KABC TV channel 7 gathering surf video and call in to him reports. Just recently a couple years ago I was a Weather Watcher K-Cal 9 TV but nothing lately? Very nice to hear from you!..

Should be re-titled "Cracks" because T's is the fickle reef at the far south end of Cracks and generally not as good. The right point inside of T's gets really fun on a mid-high tide with some chest-shoulder high swell
@zachnewsom4071
@zachnewsom4071 5 лет назад
@11:08 here you have the channel between cracks and tarantulas. all the best waves in this video are breaking at cracks. on the right day tarantulas breaks off a shallow A-frame with sectioning rights and more reliable lefts, best on low-mid tide. cracks is better with a higher tide.

@15:38 the cross is an indicator that you're at Cracks, not Tarantulas. The reef on the shore in the distance is the point which connects directly to Tarantulas. So please, for the sake of a well informed public and your own credibility, your best move would be to change this video's title to "Cracks/Jalama Beach" CA, 4-7 ft wave faces 💯

The cross at the top of the 2nd crack belongs to Elliot G, an epic kneeboarder back in the mid '80's. One of the original JBoyz. Second crack was almost always more consistent than 1st, but not as powerful as Tarantula's. Been out when that spot broke all the way right into the bay.....Christmas day 1986

This spot is notorious for great white bites. Don’t boogie board this spot or,if u do be ready. Bring a medical kit and secure 911 on speed dial. As u can see ,it’s a long swim in. Wish I was joking. Do research before going out.
@henryssurfshowcase

I agree with you, Tarantula's is on the sharky side! Even a little more so than Jalama close by just to the north. I was bumped by something very large one time I was out but never saw anything, I went in! Surf Beach is basically shark central to the NNW around Point Arguello about 15-20 miles?

I got to surf it summer '72 which pumped numerous time with big souths. Some 10 feet+ (on the face) with offshores. Just a big and very makeable peak at Tarantula's. Those were the single fin days. No leg ropes.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 4 года назад
That’s sounds awesome, and no leash back then. Not a place I would want to lose a board and swimming around? I got bumped out there one time by a big fish! I did not ever see it? I went in, was out for over an hour anyways. 6-10 faces, very fun even though it was on the choppy side. The right kind of had some NW wind protection into that small cove other side.
@clarkewi
@clarkewi 4 года назад
@@henryssurfshowcase That was a phenomenal summer. No Internet in those days. You had to be on it. The skill level was pretty high. Not many board losses. But yes, you had to be able to swim or you were in trouble.
