TARDIS EXTERIORS WORST TO BEST | Doctor Who List Ranking 

I tend to pass off the whole ‘Hartnell box changing from episode to episode’ thing as the recently-broken chameleon circuit trying to fix itself, meaning that the TARDIS’ exterior is constantly changing as it tests the chameleon circuit and fails to fix it by itself. Idk if that makes sense to anyone else, but I can’t find a good way to explain it.

I love Hurt's TARDIS, honestly. I love the war-torn look. If you could see patches of exposed white roundels where the wooden panelling has fallen off, that'd be awesome.

Thing I loved about the older exteriors is you never saw inside, that mystery was always there. Also the liked it better when the windows weren't white and lit up like a Christmas tree all the time. The original ones were dark and as they should be, after all the whole point of the cloak is to not draw attention to it, it made sense.

I think Smith's is actually my favourite for the reasons you don't like it so much. It has a sort of presence to it, it looks like a police box but there's something not quite right about it, like it's actually something trying to be a police box (which of course it is) which I think works with the TARDIS's dodgy chameleon circuit. It also looks great in flight, perhaps because it does look slightly beyond a simple wooden box. Then again, I love Whitaker's too because it does look like a simple wooden box so I guess they can appeal in different ways!

It's still unexplained that Smith's Tardis changed from deep blue with the black and white windows to the purply clear windows

i absolutely love the 11th doctors exterior because out of all the tardises it feels the most modern and the colour is just beautiful. also i really love the windows and how it looks in certain lighting. also the saint johns ambulance with the gigantic gorgeous red interior makes this the perfect tardis

If I had to travel in a box I'd choose the 12th doctors, both in and out although the 13th exterior and hell bent interior are close seconds

If character options remoulded the roof to look like a 1966 box they could have so many variants including the different lamps, it's my most wanted figure from them alongside 2013, 2017 and 2020 cybermen

I have to agree with your first place. In actual fact though, it is exactly the same box as Hartnell’s original. It just kept having bits added and taken away over the years. The only reason they got rid of it was because it fell in on Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen during filming for The Seeds of Doom. Fun fact!

I think the problem a lot of people have with the Whittaker exterior is it’s such a radical departure from what modern Whovians have grown up with- the white lamp and large box with the white telephone instructions- meaning it alienated a lot of OG revival fans that had grown accustomed to the relative consistency the TARDIS exterior had held across nearly 20 years

Hartnell's box changing shape on various episodes you can justify by the chameleon circuit trying to adapt but obviously being unable to.

Color wise Whittaker's box is my favorite I do prefer some of the smaller boxes though

in Glasgow they had red police boxes. i think a funny joke would be the doctor fixes the chameleon circuit and wants to show off to her companions. they land in Glasgow and its now just red for the episode instead of a rock or a piece of machinery that she was hoping for.

McGann’s TARDIS is my favourite, but the first two classic props are up there too. Would love to have a slimmer prop again, they look so good.

I really love hartnells first. I love the white frames along with the shade of blue they use when is colourised. The big light along with the taller nature of the box. The more rectangular door (indents?) i mean when it’s not coloured it looks a bit rubbish and scruffy but when you look at it in colour it just looks perfect.

10 years, and I've NEVER noticed that the War doctor's TARDIS had a classic lamp on top.

Hi there Ace Creeper love your videos I would love to see you do an updated Tardis interior video with Jo Martin's Ruth Doctor Tardis interior included as I would love to know your opinions of the new classic interior for the Ruth Doctor as well as to see weather you have changed your mind on the order of your Tardis interior rankings and I am sure that a lot of other people would love to hear your opinions on the new classic Ruth Doctor interior as well or at the very least you could just do a standalone video on the new classic Ruth Doctor interior and possibly exterior as well just you giving your opinions on it and showing what you like and do not like about it but even if you don't do a video it is just a suggestion so keep up the good work Ace and cannot wait for your next video.

I'm 50 yrs old and I grew up with Tom Baker primarily, but never liked his Tardis model much. Surprised at how much love McGann's gets and I reall like the dark blue of it and the solid look of it. Was never a real fan of the Eccleston - Smith box, but I do like the white window frames. Jodie's is nicer than those ones, but the greenish tinge is a bit off for me. Great video !

I'm soooo happy that Russell T Davies kept Jodie's exterior for the 60th anniversary and Series 14. Personally it's my favourite, it just looks so clean!!

My favorite police box is the eighth doctor’s from the tv movie. I love the color of blue used and the windows being little different designs with the glass. It fits the eighth doctor’s character the best I think.

13's tardis has to be one of my favorites, as there's something classic about it

The Hartnell box never lost the St John Ambulance badge, it was just faded, if you look closely you can see it

The reason McCoy's TARDIS was a lighter shade of blue is that in The Happiness Patrol it was painted pink then repainted blue.

I've had my picture taken next to what might be one of the Whittaker Tardis props, at BBC Salford, seems I'm about halfway up the bottom window in terms of height. Loved seeing it though and the NSD props

The original prop lasted for 13 years making it probably obe of the longest continuously used props. It went through many changes and repairs but still was the same basic prop. Eventually wear and tear took its toll and it was retired at the end of season 12.

I just can’t wait until you get to compare the old RTD era and then new RTD era!

unrelated but the way i explain to myself that the tardis changes (and how it seems to line up with the doctor regenerating) is that the regeneration energy gives the chameleon circuit or sort of kick and powers it enough to change the exterior slightly enough and maybe even the exterior mirroring the new doctors personality is from the regeneration energy sort of manifesting the doctor within the circuit

Capaldi’s box is my favorite it’s simplistic, clean, and fits well as a police box for my opinion

I'm really happy with the Jodie box being the new default for now. Glad it's sticking around. Hated her tardis interior but the box is gorgeous. The classic boxes are pretty great across the board, and I'm mixed on the RTD through Moffat boxes because of their size, but my two favourite boxes of all time are McGann's box and Whittaker's box. McGann's is just gorgeous and nicely proportioned and Whittaker's is sleek with nice intricate details that don't feel too complicated. Also I just have a preference for the blue lamp

I agree the Brachacki Tardis of the Pertwee era is gorgeous, have you seen the season 18-19 Tardis specifically?

ive never understood why the outside of the tardis can change when its meant to be stuck as a police box why can it also change how the police box looks?

Favourite Tardy Boxes: 1. Movie - The doors look more sunken, the roof signs stick out a bit more and those things just make it look really nice and creepy. (though frankly narrowing down it's actual colour for drawing is a bit of a hassel) 2. Whittaker - It looks so gorgeous. A very welcome change to the same box we had since the start of the new series. The new windows and shape really help make it look almost surreal in a way that i can't explain. 3. RTD era - I love the colour scheme for this one - the faded blue really works and it looks so cool in so many different lights. First time we see it parked by the shop, it just added to the sheer mystery of what was going on

You forgot the time the TARDIS briefly turned into a tombstone then an organ when the Sixth Doctor tried to fix the chameleon circuit. ... I'd put those at the bottom.

The best tardis’ are of course the 6th doctor’s tardis(as he’s the only doctor to ever actually attempt to fix the chameleon circuit.) and the happiness patrol pink tardis.

Smith’s box looks the same as the one used in the Peter Cushing films back in the 1960s.

Your ranking is fine but in my opinion the capaldi box is best because I think the colour is perfec,t the light is a nice bright colour and my favourite part is the windows because most of the windows are darker than his and this makes it look ultimately nicer to look at . The back part on the window is in a T shape which is nice because it looks like it stands for TARDIS.That is mainly why I love it.

Why does the 2005 - 2010 box look grey the majority of the time

1. Cushing Dalek Movie Prop (It's a little big but it's got loads of charm, and feels the most like a 1960's relic traveling through time and space. No comment on the interior, though.) 2. McGann (Every element of the classic boxes I like is present here. The roof is amazing, the windows are so unique, and that's the best shade of TARDIS blue we've ever had. Plus, its interior is fantastic, so that helps.) 3. Whittaker (I'm actually not a huge fan of the greeny-blue, but that being said, everything about this box is so charming, it feels, like you said, like it could actually be an actual police box. I love the yellow windows and blue lamp as well. This is such a a good prop, probably best in the new series.) 4. 1963 original prop (So. So good. I'm slightly prefer the presence of a St. John's Ambulance badge, and this prop looks so battered. This is how the TARDIS should look to me. The roof is a little too flat for my liking, but overall it's fantastic.) 5. Capaldi (looks best in series 10, and this and the Whittaker box have been battling for best ) 6. 1966-1976 altered original prop. (I like the modern series rebuild a lot, but I like the signage and blue of the early baker appearances. Being picky with the preferences, but the prop itself is great.) 7. 1976-1979 Baker prop. (Shada appearance is the best. I unironically love the police lamp. This prop is severely underrated. Yes, it's kinda bad and a little weird, but man does it have some personality. A weird prop for a weird Doctor. I just love this funky little thing and I probably love this higher on the list. Honestly, make it a little slimmer, the windows a tough wider, and add a roof as in logopolis, and boom. It'd be the best TARDIS exterior in my book.) 8. 2010-2013 Smith. (This prop's first appearances are great. The blue is nice and deep, the black windows are the best kind of windows, and the new prop contrasts nicely with its predecessor. Though, as it goes on in life, the paint becomes a little flatter, and a little too light for my taste. The Snowmen appearance was brilliant, however, and I wish they'd stuck with that battered look for the rest of its run. But they didn't. This prop is good, though. I still prefer the slightly slimmer, more worn Capaldi era props though. 9. The 80s prop. (I may get flack for this, but I'm not a fan of this one. The panels are too shallow, the windows are a dull grey instead of a bright white or a sharp black, and the blues they use after season 20 onward are atrocious. I don't hate this one, but I don't really care for it either. I would say the best I like it is in Season 18, with the matching blue signage and such. Still loads better than the ones further down my list. A good TARDIS prop, just not my taste.) 10. The War Doctor exterior. (See: 2005-2010 exterior, added: this is about how battered a TARDIS should be in my eyes, but I can't stand that grey color.) 11. 2005-2010 TARDIS. (I'm sorry, but I can't. This one is the only TARDIS I actively dislike. It's too wide, the blue is ugly, the signage choices are weird, I don't like a white "pull to open" sign without a St. John's badge, and to top it all off, this box is far too overrated. That TARDIS.PNG pic activates my fight or flight. This just isn't a very good TARDIS, and the interior is as ugly to match. I also don't care for the frosted windows, either. This is the worst box to me. It's still a TARDIS, so I like it in that sense, but beyond that, bleh.)

I think your issue with the Smith colour probably isn’t that it’s darker, as I’m pretty sure the previous once are almost always a darker shade. I think it’s more likely you dislike that it’s more vibrant

I love the fifth doctors tardis the most because it was the first to look like an accurate police box, plus the dimensions are much closer than the current models

There is an aspect to your Number 5 entry Jodie Whittaker's Tardis that never gets mentioned. From the exterior look at the glass panel above the doors, from the outside it reads "POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX" as it does on all other versions of the TARDIS but if you go inside & look at the same panel Jodie's TARDIS is the only one where the writing can still be read properly with the words appearing the correct way around, on all other versions of the TARDIS the words are reversed on the inside as they should be.

I like 13's exterior the most and just something about it just stands out from the rest, I just wish the interior looked just as amazing. (I don't mind it as much as everyone else does, but it's no Moffat console room or even the TV Movie console room).

My favourite exterior is the Blue Police Box.

This has given me a thought, surely the tardis exterior should maintain a consistent look since it cant change form etc. However it still technically does. Just strange to think about

The thing with Matt Smith’s TARDIS being plastic-ie I understand why it looks like that, mainly because it was sort of technically the first season in HD. And understanding other TV shows and productions going to HD was a completely different ball park to make things “look good”. It wasn’t bad it was just a look for the era. But it got refined a but more with Capaldi and the lighting of that was really cool.

The only thing that bugs me about Whitaker's TARDIS is the telephone door handle is on the left. Why would they do that :') Throws off the synergy of all the symmetry.
