That Celebrity Basketball game was a death trap.. I’m from NYC, and my crew and I went, saw, and left when we saw all of those people. It was in 91’, I am glad he corrected the timeline from 96’.. I remember that evening very well, a pregnant young lady from my high school at the time was one of the 9 victims that were crushed to death. How were they crushed. The gymnasium door opened outward, and it was located down a narrow flight of stairs.. ppl were pushing and rushing downstairs and those at the bottom of the stairway were piled up on.. those inside the gymnasium couldn’t push the door open due to the bodies that were piled up against it, nor could those outside of the door open the door; because they were crushed up against it, including the pregnant young lady. Very sad time it was for a pregnant teen and her unborn to die. It was held at City College and it was suppose to be a fun event. I can remember thinking about how many of those tickets were being sold everywhere in Harlem.. Prayers continued to the families who lost their loved ones that evening.

I'm from white plains there have been black folk in white plains since early 1900's, there is a Black community there called greenburgh which was merged with white plains into one county. Greenburgh is upper middle class to wealthy black folks who are homeowners, Dr's Lawyers, truly inspiring well-to-do and an all black community surrounded by townships that were created by "white flight" in the 1930's and 40's. I dont know about the rest of his story, but north white plains and greenburgh are the same place and that place is black.

No we all don’t. I didn’t find out that I had ancestry in Georgia, Alabama and Virginia AND Mississippi (which was the most shocking)until l got an Ancestry account and started searching the census. I just assumed everybody was from the country towns in Texas because that’s where my Bigmama was from.

Right! My maternal and paternal family is from Texas and trust me them people knew exactly where they came from. Texas didn’t have enslavement for no more than 20 years (1845-1864) so they know which colonies they came from and who owned them if they were not free. The Republic of Texas was its own country. It was French Texas, Spanish Texas, Mexican Texas and finally Texas once it joined the Union. It’s gets more complicated if you an FBA Texas with history that goes back as far as French Texas which I do as well. Texas had over at least 560 Freedom Towns founded by FBAs so the good thing is it’s easier to find records as long as as a person have some basic information from the family to work with. And FBAs in Texas are still some of the largest land owners very quietly holding deeds for over 160 years or more.

Just about every black person we come across is going to have a European name because of slavery, especially if they can trace their lineage back to black American slavery. We got black and white dudes named Dewitt, just like there’s black and white women who’s name is Nancy, or Margaret, Julia, etc. Hell, even Natasha (which always seemed weird to me when white women have that name and it’s spelled differently). With names such as the above, you’re not going to differentiate between who’s FBA and who’s not. As far as I know, it’s the bloodline that does overall, not the name(s) necessarily.

There's a place called Tev's kitchen out here in LA that's really good but the owner and chef is a Caribbean who incorporates FBA cuisine. If you don't hear his accent you'd never know. Most successful black owned restaurants in LA are Caribbean. Soul Food restaurants are scarce here. Its usually grand opening, grand closing for US. Hurts my lil hungry feelings.
