Taro root is a starchy vegetable originally cultivated in Asia but is now used in a variety of cuisines around the world. It is an excellent substitute for white potatoes. Potatoes are part of the nightshade family and contain compounds such as atropine, nicotine and solanine, all of which are bad for your health.
Taro root is a great food to eat for both for people with diabetes, as well as those following low carb or kept diets. This is due to the fact that the type of starch it contains has a very low glycemic index and is also a resistant starch. A resistant starch is one that goes through the digestive tract and into the large intestine undigested - it is resistant to digestion, which is why it is called a resistant starch. Once it makes its way to the colon it becomes a food for the friendly bacteria to eat and make compounds which are beneficial to your health, including butyrate.
In my practice we use it, along with okra and a few other foods, as part of our cleansing protocols since it is a great binder to toxins. This is important because as we pull toxins out of the deeper tissues, we must be careful to both flush them into the urine and bind them and direct them into the bowel movement. In other words, we need to escort out these nasty toxins so they don’t begin to roam around the body as we pull them out, creating havoc wherever they go.
Taro root is definitely a food you should know about as you seek to improve your health.
