In the 1960s, a takeaway in Corstorphine pioneered a telephone delivery service, being featured in the evening news program. This clip, and thousands more like it, are available to enjoy at www.bbcrewind.co.uk
My goodness this chip shop owner could never have foreseen that his 1/9d Fish & chips would one day cost upwards of £10.00, 50 years later. £10 would have been a weeks' wages for some people in 1963 . Great video.. I love to see how much nicer people were back when I was a child..
Remarkable! Not only did Tarry do home deliveries of fast food decades before anybody else, he was psychic as well! You phoned in, placed your order and he knew who you were and where you lived without even bothering to ask.... pretty good, eh?
Great interview and great interest in the comments. So much information and confidence in the product and shop. It was fantastic. I hope more viewers see this film. They will love it.
This was my local chip shop as a child. It was next door to the school and near the local sweet shop which was called Rosie's if I remember correctly. It was a special treat I used to go with one of my sisters! I remember the family and went to college with one of the girls. His name wasn't Mr Tarry but I can't say what it was although I know it. I lived in Corstorphine for twenty years 1961 to 1981. Happy days
@@Jill-ps1rs That would be about £2 in 2024 money, which is still cheap. But add to that the VAT that was added to hot takeaway food in the 80s, another 20%.
Superb, spent many a visit to Tarry's growing up in Corstorphine, from the mid 60's onwards, just cant remember when Tarry's disappeared, although I think the shop is now a Chinese.
How utterly delightful. Growing up on a remote dairy farm in New Zealand in the 60s I could only dream of such a luxury. Purchasing food like takeaways was strictly forbidden. Our nearest f&c shop was 5 miles away. Dogfish was the most common fish and several shellfish were available. 😁
Yet no kidding, I'll say it once, never should women be given the pill, also too many nowadays grow up like pigs after eating like one and drinking gassy juice. A figure to dream off with suspenders all for a bag o chips😂
In 1963, people say .... fish supper too expensive, at 2 shillings delivered to your door. That's about £1.70 today. Good luck getting a fish supper delivered for £1.70 in 2024. Just the fish supper is £10. Delivery is an extra £5.
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic. Two bob for fish and chips -- DELIVERED!!!! He should have changed his name to McDonald -- he'd have been a squillionaire!!!!!!!
I used to buy chips there. But I never understood why it took 4 hours to make the chips. Slow fried, they said. Time is money, I said. I never bought a meal from them again. Lettuce and beans are my sustenance now.
@@chumpster69 Just along the road, opposite Manse Street, the house that's there now used to be a sweet/grocery shop... possibly Mace's?... as a primary school kid i often used to use my lunch money to nip in there for a bag of midget gems, assuming of course i was able to sneak out the school gates and not get caught, which i often was lol
