Modern day Tatars reside in Tatarstan (which is located within Russia). Kazan is the famous city in Tatarstan. Also, there are a different group that reside in Crimea (the land Russia recently seized from Ukraine) called Crimean Tatars. Both Tatar groups speak a Turkic language and they also speak Russian. They are related to other Central Asian Turkic people such as Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Uyghur, Turkmen, Azeris, and to some extent the Turkish people of modern day Turkey. However the Tatars in Siberian Russia (Tatarstan) bear a physical resemblance to Mongolians much like Kazakhs, however Turkic languages are not in the same family as Mongolian languages. Also Tatars like most other Central Asian peoples are Muslim.

My grandma is half Tatar and from what i got is that Mongols used Tatars to collect money from the Russians principlities they were like their hench men but over years we mixed a lot a lot not even just the Tatars many Turkic ppl in central asia mixed with mongols not always willingly the reson for that is that we re different people but culturally very similar we were both nomadic for most of our history so it wouldve been easy to get married to one another and if we go deeper i mean that whole eurasian steppe is just one large grassland with nothing major seperating with hundreds of groups running up and down the steppe its a crazy mixing pot i mean look at Turkmens or Uzbeks for example we look so mixed its like a new race was formed from all the mixes most Turkic ppl are very mixed

In the 14th to 16th century, there was alot of fighting in my current country territory with the Golden Horde (I know mostly about Moldavia) but big clashes were common all along the border, and up in Poland as well. Every chronicle mentions them as Tatars, and it seems this is what they also identified themselves as, not "Tartars". On various occasion (pretty much like the nobles in Europe used to have pompous titles), they referred to themselves with the rank they held in the Khanate of the Golden Horde, or with their blood ties to the leaders of Horde, but generally they called themselves "Tatars" as well. Please note the Khanate of the Golden Horde does not represent the old Mongol empire, it's just a splinter that liked to consider themselves as the "pure blood descendants". They had very close ties to the Ottoman Empire, and very often they would ally and coordinate attacks with them. They would raid and pillage the lands while the Ottomans fought the main battles somewhere else or be hired as mercenaries with mass light cavalry. They were not Muslims, not entirely at least. They worshiped animalistic gods and had separate language and customs to the Ottomans, though many people confuse them.

Thank you for explaining this, it can be kind of confusing when you're reading up on history and see Genghis khan conquered the tatars near china. Then later on people all the way in eastern europe are referring to the mongols as tatars. This is the first time I've seen anyone clarify this.

It is interesting because in Islamic literature Mongols are always referred to as Tatars and not Mongols.. makes me wonder if actually the bulk of the Mongol army was actually made of Tatars/turkic? And the generals / top elite were Mongols..

I love how you pronounce Genghis Khan, you pronounce it properly. I hope you can do research on Hazaras of Afghanistan. We have many tribe names within our ethnic group. There are Behsud/Behsut Hazaras, Dai-Khitai Hazaras, Dai-Kundi Hazaras, Jaghori Hazaras, Turkmen Hazaras, and more clan names. My father has told me that our ancestors are from Mongols. I believe we could've built a nation like Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan and flourished well but we became oppressed by the other ethnic groups very quickly. Many of us, like most Turkic people, follow Islam, but we are not accepted by the people within our own country. We are labeled as savages still, and the Iranians call Hazara refugees in their country "barbari" which means Barbarian. So far I have yet to see some representation for our people and support. We are not recognized by other Turkic nations because of oppression and not recognized by our own nation either. Hi, man, you say that Tatars are primarily a Mongolian tribe, but how could you explain the fact that they were mentioned first in turkic inscriptions as OTUZ Tatar and Dokuz Tatar (that mean from turkic thirty tatars and nine tatars). If they were mongolians, why their own name was turkic. They were turkic tribes!

Im a Volga Bolgar or mainly known as Kazan Tatar and as far as I know the word Tatar means "archer" in the meaning of "the people that see and aim far out" In actuality it doesn't matter what the specific name we gave ourselves is, since its purely based on the geographical location, we are all Turks. The Haruha tribe was near the river on the border between Mongolia and China (Manchuria), but they lost the battle and fled to the far northwest, where Genghis Khan was born. At first, Genghis was hostile to and massacred the Tatars, but since they were strong and their language was close to Mongolian, he made them his allies. Eventually, the Uyghurs were in charge of wisdom and the Tatars in military affairs.

A simple explanation, tatar is almost the same as turkic. It was used by russians towards turkic-speaking people outside of Russia as well. For example, when Russia came to conquer Caucasus, they used to call the local turkic peoples tatars. Kumyks were called Dagestani Tatars, Azerbaijanis were called Azerbaijani Tatars (that's where they got their ethnicity from tbh, cause they used to be just persians).

European people called all nomadic steppe warior people who attacked european lands "tatar" this is why many people confuse mongolians with modernday tatars. Hungarians where also called turks in european chronicles. Doesnt make them turks. People often times didint know who their enemy was and used old terms, for exampe chinese people called all nomadic invaders "huns". The original people that were called tatar by the europeans where actually mongolians and some kipchak turkic people who raided russian/european lands due to the rise of the mongol empire. What also played a role is that tatar sounds like tartarus (hell), this is was used in order to demonize the raiders. Over the time the name "tatar" stucked and the kipchaks who settled in modernday russia even before mongolians came, became "tatars". Modernday tatar people in russia and europe are kipchak turkic people with a slight slavic and mongolic influence. THEY are turkic. Mongolians are mongolic and belong to a different group than tatars.

The Tatars were originally a Mongol Tribe. The modern day republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation are descendants of Mongols who mixed with the Volga Bulgars.

Stop the propaganda. Some Mongols now mixed with the Middle East so what still does not not make them Mongol. Also many Mongols got Uralic Siberian in them. All Mongols come from all over the Central Asian mountains. Western Mongol people converted into Islam and allied with the middle eastern culture. All of these central Asian Mongol And Turkic nomadic tribes then united under Mongol empire perhaps in today's language. Because of unfortunately history is a bit whitewashed and Mongols were painted to be barbaric, wild and crazy and even created word Mongoloid to resemble people with down syndrome. All of this propaganda of fear and hate of Mongols as Mongols are the only Asian nation took over Euroasia. However, in reality, it was quite the opposite, the Mongols were/are very smart, sophisticated people. Mongol khans first introduced Romans paper for instance and allowed western traders from Venice and other parts of Italy to pass freely through the silk road and created sophisticated trading system etc... Today's most Mongol people's DNA consists of mostly different central Asian Mongol and Turkic tribal blood such are Kazak, Kalmyk, Buryat, Khalkh which are all Mongol people anyhow etc and some Siberian Uralic and Finnish DNA... There was not Turkic as separate entity back then as they were only one of the Mongol tribes. Mongol as a country and entity was created by our ancestors until then there was not Turks or Mongols. We were just nomadic people in Central Asia. In today's world people trying to divide Mongols into two ethnic groups of people like Turkic and Mongol when in reality these are just the same people come from the Central Asian mountains and were united under one country. Today's Turkish people, however, don't really look like the Turks from the Mongol mountains. Turks then looked like today's Kazak people. They are mixed and look more somewhat white which is why Caucasians trying to paint history as if Turks were the Tatars and different from the Mongols. As our country stretches from the east to the west our people also look a little different from one another. It is not unusual Mongols to have green eyes or lighter hair etc... Turks / tureg people are originated from Mongolia back then but today's Turkish people are not anymore closely related to their Mongol ancestors. All of these western Mongols now became part of Russia are all Mongol people. They resemble more Mongols than today's Turks. Today's Turkish people are more middle eastern than Central Asian Altaic people.

I am part Lipka Tatar. Lipkas were led into Poland-Lithuania by Tokhtamysh, a descendent of Genghis Khan, of the Golden Horde as it broke apart. Recent genetic studies of Lipkas are as 30 0/0 East Asian, the rest West/Central Asiatic, with some genetics from the Caucasus and Eastern Europe. They originally spoke Kipchak and were Tengrist. Those that arrived later were Muslim, but with Turkic customs.

I am personally Tatar, living between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. We see ourselves as close nations to Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Azerbajans, and Turks. Here we're talking about the term "Tatar" as it is in the Medieval historical sources and books. Not about modern-day Tatars (=Turks/Bulgars of Russia whom the Russians erroneously went on to call Tatars)! "Tatar" was how the Mongols called themselves before the adoption of the name "Mongol" (probably in honor of Muguli, the founder of Rouran Khaganate - as some Chinese source wrote that the Tatars admired some legendary Mongol warriors). The transition was not swift. In the beginning they continued to use the name Tatar, and then Tatar/Mongol interchangeably even after the annihilation of the Tatar confederation by Temujin. Or even after the Empire was called Mongol Empire ( - according to many sources of the time). Why? It needs to be explained, but the fact is in the medieval books, "Tatar" meant and means "Mongol". Tatars are one of turkic people. Turkic, Ugric people were the HUNS. Huns were spread into different directions from Altai region. These colors define their regions to define the location: Göktürks (Blue Huns) - eastern side of turkic region. Black Huns - northern side of turkic region. Golden (European) Huns - western side of turkic region. White (Hephtalite) Huns - southern side of turkic region.

For some reason this reminds me of what I heard about the Dutch and Holland, technically Holland is not the same as the Netherlands though many outside the country might refer to it as such. Holland is actually a part of the Netherlands rather than another name for the country. I could be wrong.

Crimean Tatars have nothing to do with Tatars in Mongolia. The western people simply called you guys Tatars. Crimean Tatars are Turkic for sure because they were mercenaries from central Asia who settled over there. The real Tatars were one of the major tribes of Mongol empire. They used to live in eastern side of Mongolia close to Manchuria.

Tatar doesn't means ethnicity in past history, word "tartar" means all mongoloid nomadic people's in the world from 11th century to 19-20th century.inclouding:(mongols,Turks,tunguzs,evenks,e.x.t•) search it please, don't say lies.

Mongols destroyed Tatars but kept their women and children. So the Tatars do exist but are mixed with Mongols. Then the Mongols conquered everywhere and mixed in with other people. So that's why there's a lot of confusion, because of all the mixing of genes, and locations.

The difference is the two names, same people.

Tatars are still living in Poland among Poles. Of course, they are genuine Polish, because they use to live in Poland since centiuries. But they kept their awareness of their origin and they are Muslims. This is a bit complicated, but polish national identiticy allows for double national consciousness. You can be both Pole and Tatar, and others accept it.

Gengis chased Mohammad Khorazum ( son of Khorazum Shah) up to the river Kabol. Where Mohammad Khorazum Jumped in River Kabol from High Hill (an act of bravery). Gengis stoped following ( he admired bravery) & let him go. His men brought news from "India". They said Indian rivers are muddy & animals are black. Gengis didn't like that. Thus he returned without any further confrontation.

there is no difference between tatars and Mongols in Racial aspect , Tatars have assimilated into Middle Eastern "Ottoman" Muslim Culture , this is what they call "turkic" , Tatar homeland is Mongol steppe they spoke mongolian and had shamanistic culture , we have tatar immigrants in Turkey they are lying about their existence , if you ask them they tell you that they are turk but this is stupid because they are not from Turkey .

I am Crimean tatar ,living in Romania , city of Constanta ! We are more than 50.000 tatars in this region. We speak tatar language also, is related to turkish language. We are respected here, because we conquered this region a couple hundreds years ago, when we were fighting next to Turkish empire. And today is the official day of tatars in Romania (13 December ) and we have many festivities. Peace

Actually, Turkic + Mongolic marriage = welcome Tatar child. I'm a Crimean Tatar, and it is a tradition in our family to pass on the history of our ancestors from generation to generation (cuz, when you get married, the other party's family asks about your past...) According to what I heard from my ancestors, they fought with Genghis Khan, in the Golden Horde and finally in the Crimean Khanate... Until 1990s, my grandfather was still riding horses and taking up arms. He was showing us how our ancestors fought and how they armed themselves with bows and arrows. He also learned and saw it from his own father.

Also Turks never identify themself as Turkic. In Orkhon inscriptions we saw Turkic is upper identify of the region people , there is no identify of Mongols in early times in central Asia when Turkic tribes left the area we see Mongol rises.

Easy to remember distinctions between mongols and tartars: Mongol.... is the name of beef dish (mongolian beef). Tartar..... is the name of sauce that goes with deep fried fish.
