Seems to be the issue with the video's encoding rather than the game's graphics. The decompression always seems to miss some intermediate frames or some shit.
Dude, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this awesome "speedrun", i remember this game that was so hard back in the day, also showed this vid to my brother and had no idea about what TAS is, his first impression was: "WTF!! O.O" ahahahaha! keep making extraordinary videos like this one cause it's so enjoyable to watch.
"Dark Force is too powerful for us to defeat. Our only hope is to go back in time and murder her while she's a helpless little girl." "Hurry up, Anoa! We have to..." "Oh no! She saw the Vic Viper! Go, go, hurry! Leave Anoa to her fate!" "No! I can't abandon my friend! I..." "Wait... something weird's happening. For some reason, Dark Force looks hesitant. Now she looks frightened. Now she's shaking in terror. And... now she's rapid-fire bowing and begging for mercy. Now she's breaking down into heaving sobs." "Oh my." "Now Anoa is consoling her and giving her a big hug."
I always have to wonder what this kind of run is like to the actual characters in the game. Such as in this case, where the pilot has spontaneously acquired literally godlike reflexes and decides to use this ability in the most hilarious manner possible.
I was just thinking it was impossible to speedrun Gradius because it's an autoscrolling game, but then I remembered that a lot of time could be shaved off of pre-boss and Big Core fights if you have superhuman reflexes...
+Alice Wolff I think all of the time save in this TAS comes from ending input very early in the final level. tasvideos.org timing starts at power on and ends at final input (usually), rather than when the game actually ends. So since he ended input early and coasted to victory, he saved a pretty significant amount of time.
This is only because RU-vid literally nuked the encode recently. They're being fixed and will show up on TASVideos' actual RU-vid channel TASVideosChannel.
+Jaakko Vähänen It looks like it's either a score glitch or an item glitch that edits the working memory of the machine, changing a value that sets your status to having completed the boss fight. I might be completely wrong though.
It's a warp. There's a condition in first 3 stages to go for a warp. Warp makes you to skip 1 stage. In level 1, it is when the thousands digit of your score is even and you need destroy 4 hatches.
+Ihate GooglePlus The inputs can be put into the game and it'll play just like in the video. No one is actually holding a controller and doing all that. I hope that makes sense.
