Loved this game so much as a kid. Never made it past the second stage.

I knew of it but never had a chance to play or buy it.

Playing Crystalis and Clash at Demonhead at the moment. My nostalgia meter is off the chart.

@@demon4ello "Tool-assisted Speedrun". AKA, this is a pre-programmed set of inputs, optimized for speed. This isn't someone playing live. That doesn't take away from the achievement though. TAS runs are often used as inspirations for "real" (AKA live) speed runs, if they're deemed human-possible to perform. Sometimes, TAS speedruns use tricks that aren't humanly possible to perform, such as dual inputs (pressing both left and right on the same frame), but outside of that, TAS is usually the "guide" for where live speedruns go over time.

It’s a TAS inputs were added so that the game looks flawless. Nonetheless a TAS is very time consuming

Irem owns the intellectual property. They still exist but they heavily restructured multiple times over the years and basically became a slot machine company. Compile, the developer, has been defunct for almost 20 years. Its branding lives on in a company called D4 Enterprise, which offers classic Compile and Konami titles through a subscription service. M2 developed and published GG Aleste 3. They'd be a logical choice for at least a spiritual followup to Guardian Legend.

Laser doesn't require any skill in most cases. In this game if something takes damage it can't hit you. And laser do damage constantly. So until you hit bosses with laser they can't hit you. You just fly inside the boss until it's dead. Only Optomon can't be easily killed with laser in real time, because you can't destroy that seaweeds. Also bosses can't take more than 5 HP of damage per hit and laser do maximum damage to bosses pretty early in the game.

@@AfroCentauri The one I remember as a kid was its distributor Broderbund advertising its two games, The Battle of Olympus and this one. I liked the announcer when at the end he said, "YOU DECIDE!!" Oh such memories!!

A forty minute tas is enough for me, doing without damage would just make it take longer.

It's because there is a sprite limit. Get a bunch of shots on screen, and enemies can fail to spawn.

It's a Tool-Assisted Speed Run. This was programmed into the game to do that. That's what TAS stands for, as in TASVideoChannel. They even put how many times they edited the run in the beginning of the video.
