Zanac is one of those space shooter games in which you are trying to save the earth.
On this 5th iteration by adelikat ( tasvideos.org/... ), the full game gets played again, as the previous movie ( tasvideos.org/... ) actually violated some of the older rules, in particular the one about
skipping ahead via in-game codes ( tasvideos.org/... ). Only taking the final stage of this TAS into account, it is roughly a 16 second improvement over it, thanks to a glitch involving the hidden fairy of Area 12 (or, as the game calls it, Arer 12), which allows to kill all forms of the final boss instantly. More details can be found in the author's comments ( tasvideos.org/... ). This glitch allows for input to end as soon as the fairy is activated, which is very early in the final stage, as shown here.

I can definitely see this game as being a "warm-up" of sorts for when Compile made The Guardian Legend 2 years later

I like how nearly all the sound effects from Zanac made it in to Guardian Legend.

Zanac was developed originally for the MSX before being ported to the Famicom and NES. Roughly around the time of the NES port's release, Compile developed "Guardic" for the MSX. Some themes and almost all of the sounds were recycled for the FC/NES release "Guardic Gaiden" ("Guardic Side Story"), which became NES "Guardian Legend". That being said, if you managed to get the secret message "See you again in Guardic", it is the MSX Guardic the game references, not TGL. Also, with that being said, holy hell I didn't know max shot speed upgrades can shoot faster than TAS. Also, I have never ever been able to activate the warps. Also, I have never been able to beat the game. Also, yes, I have used "also" too many times. Good show--

There's a game called Tyrian, and it uses that same fanfare from this game.

I think this may be the prequel to it; there's a song in Tyrian's soundtrack called "ZANAC5."

It's a homage. The music in Zanac was made by Masatomo Miyamoto while the Tyrian music was made by Alexander Brandon. The Tyrian devs were influenced by Zanac and apparently it was part of the sales pitch for Tyrian at some point.

It's a nice version, though I like the graphics of the MSX2 zanax ex version better. More animated sprites and the backgrounds have glowing lights etc. Downside is that MSX2 number of sprites on a horizontal line is very limitd, giving flickering and even disappearing enemies while collision detection still works. My favorite is Aleste on the MSX2 with FM-PAC sound module. Aleste 2 is nice also.
