+ExaltedDuck Yes, but later in the series they figured out ways to create stationary minibosses in a similar fashion, like the Fire breathing dogs in 2, or the cat robots in 3, the snails in 4, etc... They NES can draw 64 8x8 pixel hardware sprites at a time (or 32 8x16 sprites), this is what everything people really call "sprites" are made up of. The system however can only show 8 hardware sprites on every single horizontal line of pixels (called a scanline). If there's more than that, only the ones with the top 8 priority are actually shown, the rest are invisible. The priority is determined simply by the order in the sprite RAM, so hardware sprite 0 is top priority, sprite 1 is lower, sprite 2 is lower, and so forth... when the game draws what people call sprites, they always give every hw. sprite a random priority, so that they all get to be shown eventually. That's how flicker comes to be.

Holy shit, thanks a lot for both of you guys commenting on this. I learned a shitload about something I've spent countless of hours on but never knew why things behaved the way they did or how they managed to get bigger bosses to work, now I do.
