What a nice dude! Please, anyone reading this, insist on paying this guy if you ever call him for advice. His heart is in the right place, yours should be too. Aloha and thanks for the great video. Pretty sure my 388 needs a capstan belt and a few other general maintenance items mentioned here (love the drill sandpaper trick!)
Bought a 388 a few months back and just waiting to finish building the space for it, (kind of like your barn). This'll be an amazingly useful resource.
Big Matt's channel has helped me so much since I decided to start messing around with Reel to Reels. I like learning from an old Air Force guy since I'm an old Air Force guy. 😂
Thanks so much for sharing this. Just brought my first 388 home today, FF and REV work, Play does not, I suspect a belt. I'm going to do a full refurb on this unit. I am so stoked.
@@travisraab I'm pretty excited. I have a CNC machine, so I'm going to fab actual hardwood sides for it, and an actual padded front. Then clean up all the knobs, make 'er shine. I've got a Tascam 38 reel to reel to get working too, a couple 424's, a 414, a Porta 07, and so on...I think I might have a Tascam...er...problem. The only cure...more Tascams.
@@travisraab I am. Have you used the 38 yet? I had to get a new tire for the pinch roller. That showed up yesterday. Plus ordered reels and tape. Can't wait to try this thing out. I have a Fostex Model 450 mixing board for the 38, it's going to be all old school stuff.
Travis, also get a tape head demagnetizer. After time the tape playback heads will become magnetized. Meaning, the highs will become dull sounding, so clean and demag your record and playback heads for full fidelity. I’m also an electronic/computer technician. Jus do a google or Amazon search should be easy to find and it’s a very simple process. This restorative procedure works on ANY analog tape machine.
Yeah I've considered it thanks for the suggestion Eric! Some people have commented mixed reviews about these. I'd be willing to give it a shot I just know there is also a chance of totally destroying my heads (I think it says that in the manual). Have you tried it yourself?
@@travisraab Put it like this because of the age of the heads and usage with tape, this was maintenance 101 after so many hours, to keep fidelity. Done it 100’s of times, trust me.
Hei again ! I think tape is magical and the perfect medium for recording extreme metal. I hope for more barn recording videos please ! Have a good one. /Orm
@@travisraab yeah! it was manufactured by Irish/Ampex and it was sold by ampex from the 60’s-80’s, i have a few different formulations that all sound different 👌
