Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to show us, musicians, that there will always be an alternative to the madness of consumerism in this industry and, that music has to be always the main goal, the first thing to worry about. Have you guys noticed how the prices on these analog, "ancient" machines are going up each passing day? Thanks again, man. It was because you that I got my 424 and I love it! 😉

Yeah, the prices are insane. I got mine for $50 locally a few years back. I guess there's a demand for these units and the sound and experience of recording to them; I think a lot of people would be better served using these to at least learn and figure out what's important and how to make a simple song with the limitations. It's definitely informed all of my recording skills in the digital world. Yeah, it's crazy to me how many people don't really make music but just get caught up buying gear: I think we all have a friend like this. GAS is real and something to keep in check; pretty much any time I want to buy something or go searching, it just means I want to make some music. Happy recording and thanks for watching, JAC!

@@424Recording: Sure, man. I also have been a victim of that syndrome. It's sad and it really takes a toll on your finances. I have more stuff than I can actually use because, I have to work long hours to feed my family and to pay for all those goodies. But, thanks to you and an old book I bought many years ago, I'm getting back into making music, truly, and using effectively my stuff, resisting the temptation of getting more trash, (which is definitely the future for every piece of electronic, hardware and, of course, softwares that you buy nowadays) and using my DAW and the rest of my stuff as mere tools which, it's what they are supposed to be. Thanks again and, stay safe in these difficult days, my friend.

Yup, that's one thing about all of this stuff and about finances in general: waste not, want not. The less stuff you can buy or be okay with not buying, ultimately the better off you'll be, at least I've found this in my life. What book is it? That sounds like exactly the subject matter of an eBook I wrote, The Cure for GAS; I need to read that. Yeah, once you realize all this stuff is trash, that concept informs your decisions about what to purchase and why. And like you said, it's all tools as a means to an end. Cheers, JAC. You, too.

@@424Recording: Hi, Mike... Well, about the book I told you about, it's from a guy named David Simons. Its titled "Analog Recording. Using analog gear in today's home studio". I really enjoyed it and I took some very valuable tips from him and it also has some very informative interviews with engineers from the old school. Very nice.

Best 4 track tutorial I've ever seen well done. Theres a tape revival going on. And I'm really happy about that. Theres a warmth and fullness about analogue tape that cant be beaten.

type 1 tapes are made better than type 2 i got a few makes all performed better even the one that wasnt as good as my other 2.type 2 is for digital sounds.but has less range frequency hear a analogue vinyl record & it makes an sacd sound shit you can actually get 100 hrtz on an analogue recording but you need speakers with added filters tech similar to a guitar amp to boost the signal.but on a guitar amp you use a full range frequency tube to boost the range these speakers are made in smaller numbers today.but in jimi hendrix,s famous words i wanna see & hear everything also you can get a 120 min tape or a 90 min tape for longer recording time great post peace..

I use mine for demos, but it takes roughly a year to write all the material and by the time that's done and I want to record to my 424 or 488 I totally forget everything and end up screwing up my demo, and have to rerecord twice just to relearn the dang machine. This tutorial is gold and something I'll have to come back to refer to. Thanks!

The guided by voices trick is more useful when you're recording on type 1 cassettes like they were. It's really just a roundabout version of Dolby C or similar analog noise reduction.

Just fixed my 424 today. Gears were stuck - waited 5 years to unscrew the thing and tap the gear back in place. Just watched this entire demo. Damn, man what an epic demo! The song is great too. Although it was an about the music that I recorded because I really didn’t care for it however it was extremely helpful even though I have a 414 MK to digital Tascam wich is also pretty damn old… this helped tremendously as I am starting a new home studio system with a Lotta new stuff and a Lotta all stuff that was given to me for free. Help me summarize in my hand the inns and outs of recording properly. Nice going, really loved listening to this and The explanations were very understandable even for brain fog person like me at 55. Ive got boxes of analog 4 & 8 track recordings ive recorded for all my ba ds ive jammed with over the years & now im trying the stem separation technology to remix certain old live & demo or rehearsal tapes that cant be cleaned up on the analog tape recorder & am going to revive & properly mix the seperated tracks & mix & master on my digital 16 track recorder & have new old music to enjoy & possibly release!! Its quite the amazing technology for old music!!😊

@@424Recording Just the truth as a snapshot of your skills at the time this went out ... you really do make a good, nicely-paced video on this topic. As for that topic - the TASCAM Portastudio 424/III - I have to say, man ... I envy the shite out of you! ;) That is one bloody elegant machine. For twenty years, I was using its kid sibling, the TASCAM Portastudio 414 and, I have to say, it served me rather nicely! I'm on a Zoom R-16 now and ... weird as it may sound ... I'm getting agoraphopbic as fuck with it: two decades in Finland on 4-track plus nearly two decades on 4-track in the UK ... then you've 16 to play with - it is a proper mind-fuck! I went to 8-track for a few sessions. just to get used to the space. Now I'm coping with having 16 tracks to work on. Keep up the good work, good sir, and vive le portastudio!

I know right?! Anything above 4 tracks always seems so decadent to me now haha. Yeah, I do think the mkiii is the peak of the technology. It combines a lot of the ideas of the predecessors while also giving you some extra room with the size of the unit. Thanks, David, will do! Yeah, vive le portastudio!

@@424Recording Heh - yeh, it seriously is! I have to say - looking at my own TASCAM 414, your 424-III looks luxurous! Certainly looks like a very flexible set-up in the mixer section, and I like what you can do with it - seen some of your other videos on here. Really impressive stuff! And yeh - when I got my pal's Zoom R-16, 16 tracks of space is just sooooooo big! I limited myself to 8 tracks. And that was much more comfortable. Then I branched out into the 16-track world somewhat. You'll have heard of tthese two people, I'm sure: Glyn Johns and Graham Cochrane. Glyn Johns practically refuses to work on anything over 16 tracks - he says that is plenty to be going on. Given that he can get a truly wonderful drum sound on three or four mics, I'm right behind him on that! Graham Cochrane, though, is a bit more forgiving - says: 'Limit yourself to 24 tracks maximum!' And GC is working on DAWs! Either way, the take-home is definitely one of 'freedom within limits', isn't it? Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

@@424Recording I got one question..I been doing some black metal lately on the 4 track and the guitar tone is coming through a little over distorted..I am using a boss ds- 1 and have rolled the tone down..any suggestions to getting a better sound?

@@spacealienjesus709 I would watch the volume. If it's coming in too hot, make sure the meters are hitting at about 0db. Mine always seems to overestimate the volume. You could even try recording lower than that. Dial in the tone you want on the pedal, and then figure out the gain on the 4-track

Hi Mike - I really enjoyed this thanks! I love how you took the time to walk us through the song E2E and learn how you use the Tascam. The 424 is perfect format for your music! The tutorial is such a tease! Does the snare sound better on right or left bus? Guess what! It's all getting ping ponged to track 4 along with the rhythm guitar and where the song ends up that makes perfect sense! Your workflow is different to mine (I mostly record direct, not thru the bus) but what you do makes sense, especially using aux 2 for monitoring. This video is for the 4-track nerds and I was all but reaching through the monitor trying to tweak the mix! I obsess over mixdown, particularly adding effects so is refreshing for me to really see how someone else uses the same equipment as me, but so differently, and ending up with a great result!

Hahaha thanks, Peter. I wanted to show as much as possible about the topics that confuse people the most, even if it meant winding up with a mono ping pong bounce of the first three tracks! I keep it simple out of laziness and also because I think it serves the music I'm making. Maybe a vid on recording only direct is in order. That sounds like a good one to illustrate that concept. The aux 2 monitor is super important IMO; I've accidentally recorded tracks on tracks and doubled things up before. There's no going back after that. That's awesome, re: reaching thru the monitor. That's one thing that I need to experiment with more: adding effects and using effect 1. I've never found the urge to do so. Again, out of laziness, I spend a lot of time getting the sounds right before I record them, so there's as little mixing left to do as possible, mostly just leveling. It would be great to experiment with some new techniques, though. Cheers, Peter and thanks for watching!

We have some common equipment; not only do I have a Tascam 424, but I also have Keeley Electronics 30MS Double Tracker, which I got on the strength of your product reviews. So on your song where you have vocal double tracked on track 1 and 3. You could demo the 30MS double tracker by showing it doubling your vocal from track 1 and that opens up the door for you to add some other overdub on track 3. The 30MS is a great option to open up the track count by giving a double tracked voicing without having to print across 2 tracks. I'm on your discord (Kegs Cosmic) and I'll hit you up with some detail on how I use the 30MS and get quite a good faux double track vocal. It's not the same, but is a solid option when you are coming up to your last overdub on a 4 track!

Hi Mike, sadly I didn't have the opportunity to jam with the man. But we both lived in a housing estate called Ferguslie Park in Paisley west Scotland. Stealers wheel made an album called Ferguslie Park. Also the Scottish comedian Billy Connolly was in a band with Gerry called the humble bums.

I hear you, JPC. I think you can see it in my face in this one. Keep going. Try to stay positive. Make sure you do something you want to do, now more than ever. Yeah. They are very similar. I used to have that model as well. I think the main differences are what you said about the extra tracks and the fact that the PSU is hardwired. Oh, yeah, you also have better XLR jack placement IMO! unfortunately im way too broke for this.. just wired up a passive volume mixer thing with some input jacks & potentiometers and hooked it to my tape deck haha loved the video anyways, i love to learn more about tape recording!

@@riancleland8741 Im using a Sony LBT-V302 double tape deck. If youre looking for good gear, get a deck from the late 80s to mid 90s since that was the golden cassette age. In most cases, used cassette decks are doing pretty fine if you clean the tone head. Make sure that the deck has a Dolby Noise Reduction function (NR) for a cleaner sound.

I've used a Tascam Porta II 4-track cassette for years. So much fun recording original songs! I was able to bounce tracks 1,2,3. to track 4 for my rhythm section, and free up tracks 1 & 2 for double tracking a vocal and use track 3 for a keyboard or another guitar, whatever I wanted! I loved the sound! I now have a 16 track digital which is fine but, I prefer analog over digital sound... Digital is much to clean or something. Sadly my Porta II broke down and I never bothered to have it fixed. (years ago) I still have a many of the cassette tapes with my original songs on them. I wish I could find a way to get the songs off the tape without buying a 4 track machine... A friend gave me his old Tascam 4 track cassette but the tapes play super fast.. like Alvin and the Chipmunks! Maybe its the adapter Im using? Its a player that only uses AC.no batteries.

The 4-tracks record to the tape at a higher speed to reduce noise, so unless you've got a deck that matches that speed (not sure if there are any, tbh) it'll sound like the chipmunks!

hey man, i just got a tascam 464, and although its obviously not the same as your machine, im really appreciating this in depth video because Im figuring out stuff about how it works by comparing the functions of the two machines. Unfortunately, I think my channel 4 is dead (just like how you had a broken channel on your machine). Also the headphone jack only works at an angle otherwise the signal only comes through one ear im sure you know what im talking about its super annoying. It's a huge bummer, and I was wondering if you had a recommendation for me in terms of either getting it looked at or possibly investing in a more reliable machine. I know these things are old, and susceptible to these kinds of problems, the information youve been providing has already been so helpful. Subscribed either way. Thank you!

Thanks, James. I'm glad the vids are helping and are working across the different machines. I guess the broken channel depends on how it is not working. I would check to see if you can record to track 4 from another channel. That's an easy work around if that is the case. Mine still doesn't behave nicely even after Jay looked at; it seems like every once in a while, I need to spray it with DeOxit, or it will revert back to not working properly. The headphone jack issue might also be an easy fix; I'm not sure how the routing is on the 464 but on the 424 the headphone jack and the line out (I think, or the monitor out) are the same signal so if one of them doesn't work right as in your case, you could split the signal from the line out into a cheap headphone amp. You'll have to test out the signal path to see if that is the case. It's probably the monitor out. The headphone issue is probably an easy repair; it most likely will just need to be re-soldered. I'd say hold onto the one you've got as you can work around those issues somewhat easily (as long as you can still record to track 4!) Thanks for watching and happy recording!
