This old Tascam was in pretty good shape, except for the poor cassette door. With some parts and some TLC it was running like new again.
The closing song is "Nocturnally" by Amulets, provided courtesy of the RU-vid Audio Library.
Equipment:
Sony Handycam HDR-CX240
Zoom H6
Koolertron DDS Signal Generator
This deck has already sold, but other similar decks and vintage equipment that I have worked on can be found in my Reverb shop: reverb.com/shop/beavertanksbo...

This is the first 4 track I've owned. I found it on the side of the road in a free box. It buried under a bunch of pink tutus. Totally unexpected find! I recorded an album with it. It's on my channel if your into grungy/folksy/post punk.

overall a great video, but i dont like how you cut important scenes such as adjusting calibration via trimpots. i also understand the camera battery died when you were performing the belt replacement but i think it would have been helpful to at least have talked through the process while showing the innards of the transport. either way thank you for sharing the knowledge

You do good work, do you clean and do small repairs to items sent to you?

Hey great vids man 👍.. have you ever worked on a 488 mk1 before? Im having issues with tracks 1&5. I think they are shared somehow as far as internal routing. I get good playback on a pre recorded tape from those tracks, but recording to them yeilds extremely low playback level and nothing on the meter. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Great work! I have a portastudio but don’t really know what’s wrong with it. Do you do repairs? Where are you located?

Hey, not sure if you can help me out but I recently bought a portastudio 424 mkii and the stereo monitoring is screwed up on it. The right side gets way more volume than the Left, if barely gets any volume. This means that the panning is also skewed. This happens just with live monitoring too not just with playback. Any ideas on how I could solve this problem?

I bought one of those and heard a rattling sound after I removed all of the cabinet screws. Once opened up I find what appears to be a rather large lock clip that you would find holding a door lock on a car door. It had a bad motor so I rebuilt it. Upon reassembly,I powered it up and it won't display correctly as it did when I received it. Come to find out, there was another one of those clips lodged under the main board as I call it. So before I tear back into it do you or anyone else know where these two clips went or were they even supposed to be in the machine to begin with as I didn't see you remove or install said clips. Kind Randy Brown P.S. super good video!

Can you offer some advice, I got a 424mkiii off eBay, but it has issues! When turning it on, the machine is playing, motor turning and heads in up/play position. There's not start up screen, the screen just doesn't light up. I've tried manually turning the gear that lowers the heads back down, untill they are lowered, but when turning the power back on it immediately moves them up and motor is running. I disconnected the wires that power the play function/motor in the hope it might trick the machine into thinking it was stopped but still nothing on the screen. I'm new to fixing things like this, so any advice appreciated

Hey ThatTascamGuy! Love your channel. My Tascam 424mkii just arrived today and it’s great. I’m trying to get used to it and I thought I’d test it out by myself by putting in a Maxwell UL90 tape in (Lloyd Cole and The Commotions) However, when the tape is placed in it plays the other side of the tape in backwards and the sound is very quiet. Would you have any advice as to how I’m supposed to play the tape properly? It’s right out of the box and I’ve not played about with many controls yet. Any help would be much appreciated!

normal stereo tape decks have 2 channel heads. the tascam has 4 channels, you should hear both sides, eavh with Left/right of the cassette, of which one is backwards. its also high pitched, since the tascams tape speed is higher to have higher fidelity audio

you simply get a stereo tape deck for those

Is it possible to use a 9v power supply on a 424? If not which power supply should I get? A official Tascam one or will the amazon knock off for half the price do the trick?

Hey there, Is there a speaker inside the tascam? Or do you use a speaker? Thanks

I bought one of these years ago in which all the pots and faders are fairly scratchy and dirty. As someone with little experience in repairing mechanical stuff like this , would you think it’s worth trying things myself , or would that be too daunting and also the possibility of me messing things up? Is it worth fixing or would it be too expensive to pay for it ? Do you repair these at all?

I am late to the party here but that scratchiness is just oxidation. You need a can of electrical contact cleaner. My favorite is deoxIT. He showed the breakdown of the machine and where to spray in the video. As long as you can follow the procedure and not lose anything you should be able to get it open and cleaned up. Just take it really slow and be mindful of everything you do. You got this!

I’ve been watching your videos intently. I have mk 2 424 since 2006? Bought new then. Recently started using again. Crackles cuts in and out on level knobs. Do you repair or clean? How do I get a hold of you? Or should I give it a crack myself? Thank you! For any response. Matt in Maine.

Man this is a great video. Do you still do this? If so are you on any social media that I can follow? When I am ready to buy one of these, I'd love to get it from someone who restored it so conscientiously, even if it's a bit more expensive.

Hi sir! I recently got the same model for free off of my uncle's old studio. It wasn't powering up and then when I opened it and check the power supply board I've found that the main transformer was missing, probably in a previous attempt to repair it. I then searched for the schematics for this particular model and found non. Can u please tell me what type of transformer it uses and its pinouts?
@ThatTascamGuy
@ThatTascamGuy 3 года назад
Finding a replacement for that transformer would probably require finding a dead 424 mk2 and taking it from there. I believe it isn't just a single winding pair transformer but actually has at least three separate voltage outputs, meaning it was almost certainly custom manufactured so you won't find an off the shelf replacement. You could, in theory, build an external power supply with multiple transformers in it to supply the voltages needed but a much easier solution would be to find a new transformer from a dead unit.

@@zochamlianatlau-1507 Actually, now that I look through my pile of parts machines I do have a 424 mk2 with a bad transport and a dead channel on the mixer board that just happens to have a perfectly fine power board. If you're interested, and in the US (for ease of shipping anyway), I'd be happy to pass it along to you.

@@ThatTascamGuy wow thats great! But I'm a bit skeptical whether replacing my power board is enough to bring mine back to life.. anyway I definitely would love to give it a try! Can u please email me to xochama@gmail.com Thanks!

CAPS-TIN. It's pronounced "caps-tin". Tell your tape friends because you're all saying it wrong. Great vid though.
