Well, poisons have their use throughout the ages. I think people would eventually find out that certain parts of the meat were greatly less poisonous / effective than the rest. "Oh this pufferfish liver will BTFO anyone I want, cool."

I don't know about the ancient times, but currently, the fugu fish is not at all dangerous. Every place that prepares it, also has anti-poison. The symptoms are distinct and can be treated very easily. There is next to no danger in eating the fugu fish.

PersonaX Chill out. I think you misunderstood what he was saying. All he said was that fugu fish is really safe to eat today thanks to all the safety precautions. What he meant by "I don't know about ancient times" is that he doesn't know if fugu fish was as safe to eat or was prepared to the same level of safety as it is today seeing as there weren't things such as anti venom. Nowhere does he state that he doesn't know anything about ancient Japan flat out.

That's not how it worked, it's probably someone who died cause of this, then scientists start searching to know where was the poison reserve and where it was distributed inside the fish, then after some chefs used the researches to know what to eat and what to leave on the fish. There are dumb humans, but human usually want to live more than knowing what a fish taste, they wouldn't eat it knowing it's poisoned.

Well it does take a few hours for the toxin to kill you, perhaps regurgitating will help remove the fish from your body before it gets absorbed.

There's no antidote, but it is treatable. The poison completely paralyzes your muscles and makes it so you can't breathe, so death is actually caused by asphyxiation. Treatment involves feeding the patient active charcoal, which binds to the poison, and putting the patient on life support until the poison passes out of the body.

Even though it's not shown in the video, the way to remove the poison gland is very complicated and delicate process. When you dismantle the fish, you have to make sure not to cut the poison gland even a tiny bit of the poison will comes out and spoil the entire fish rendering it inedible
