It’s honestly sad to see that food that aren’t even expired go to waste. I’ve seen cases where stores even noticed and even lock their bins up

It is such bad practice from the supermarkets - they need to be responsible for their waste!

I don't get why stores don't want people taking something they're just throwing away any way. The stores don't want that any more, let the people who DO want it, be allowed to get it. Bin diving shouldn't just be legalised, it should be encouraged. Just add the disclaimer that if you get sick from food from a bin, the store/person who threw it away, isn't liable.

I agree! Food is only waste if you choose to waste it - better food management systems are needed.

@JugglinJellyTake01 Год назад
If they give it away free then you buy less. That means more people wait for the freebies in the same way they would in a deflationary economic cycle. That said I agree food waste needs reducing dramatically and that French law looks promising though it would need policing to make sure they don't purposely spoil food so it has to be binned.
@PerfectAlibi1
@PerfectAlibi1 Год назад
@@JugglinJellyTake01 Again, they're throwing it away. Meaning, they already not making any money from it, any more.
@PerfectAlibi1
@PerfectAlibi1 Год назад
@@JugglinJellyTake01 Alternatively, don't throw still edible food away but sell it bargain bin prices, maybe 90% discount? With a disclaimer that it has gone over the date, so it could not be good any more. Which let people know it's a gamble and can't sue over it.
@JugglinJellyTake01
@JugglinJellyTake01 Год назад
@@PerfectAlibi1 They used to do 90% off but that has slowly eroded to 75% off and now 50% off. It seems as though they are aware of people either cutting back or waiting for the bargains. They optimise every space and know clearly what they are doing. If wasting food means people will go for full price then that is what they'll do.

We urgently need that French law to ban throwing away food. We have a supermarkets ombudsman that to date still hasn't resulted in a supermarket prosecution yet farmers are still struggling and are still being forced to sell at below market price and getting black listed. Japan has such a high landfill tax that people are employed to take apart sandwiches and other ready meals and split them up into bread, veg and meat. We need to raise the land fill tax of food that can't be so readily salvaged.

Great content, very eye-opening. I didn't have a clue supermarkets were throwing away food before even the Display-date expires!

It was really shocking to me so I had to film it

The plastic at least should be removed from food, and stuff separated. Allotment holders could compost the rotten veg etc.

Changes and development are happening .everyday..it is adjustments in all things..that includes inventories, storage and pricing/prices where card companies are compliant.

People are living in poverty! Starving! Kids are not able to eat and yet WE'RE asked to donate food to food banks?! That's criminal!!! They could EASILY donate what isn't sold! I'm furious!

If 240,000 tons are being tossed in the UK alone, imagine what the combined loss of the entire globe is every year. There's no reason why all that food can't go to feeding starving people somewhere . The "for profit only" model when it comes to food needs to change. Mandate the stores donate to food banks, soup kitchens , starving families etc. The excesses of the rich corporations and individuals is sickening .

Watching from the Philippines. All that food thrown away such a shame, would feed my little village every day. Make no mistake, this happens here also I'm sure.

@@EllaCharlotteJones It really is, what could be the solution I wonder. If food just a day or two "out of date" could just be given away instead of binned..?

Guess its swings n roundabouts as if they wasnt throwing food out then the people that receive this stuff from the divers would go without and be unable to provide this to folk in need

Great bit of independent journalism here! I’m going to go check the bins at my local sainsbury’s see if I can save some £

Sainsbury's donate their expired or nearly expired food to charities. There isn't a single disposal bin for food in our yard or inside the store. I've worked there for 9 years never seen food binned.

@@conversemackem8653 thanks for the heads up! I’ve had a look in their bins multiple times, no wonder I couldn’t find anything. Good on Sainsbury’s for doing what all supermarkets should be doing.
