Eat your peas! It’s the easiest way to fight climate change.
This is the fourth episode of Climate Lab, a six-part series produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by Emmy-nominated conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series takes what can seem like an overwhelming problem and breaks it down into manageable parts: from clean energy to food waste, religion to smartphones. Sanjayan is an alum of UC Santa Cruz and a Visiting Researcher at UCLA. Check back next Wednesday for the next episode. Visit climate.universityofcalifornia... for more.

I went to an “all you can eat” buffet once which had a great system. You could refill your plate as many times as you liked, and there was a set price BUT you paid extra for every gramme of food you didn’t eat. That means that people didn’t fill their plate and left half of it sitting there when they left, but they took a little and went back for seconds (or more) if they wanted more. It’s the little details that matter when it comes to food waste.

Capitalism makes it so the only people that make it to a position where they have the power to let that happen are those that care about profit above all else (for the most part). 99% of people hate seeing food go to waste; if the choice of what to do with excess food was up to that 99% instead of greedy capitalists, then the amount of wasted food would go down significantly.
@ThuhOthers
@ThuhOthers 3 года назад
@@tlowry6338 This has nothing to do with capitalism; it has to do with being sued. The law is the problem. Large companies (especially grocery stores) used to donate massive amounts of food to food banks until lawsuits started happening (most of which were not credible), and since the government has done nothing to protect those that are trying to do the right thing, the donating has stopped.

We can actually fight waste food in an indirect way if we implement Veganism in our society. Meat ist actually a luxury food and for that production we have to put a lot of plant food in to get less meat units at the end. So we can basically eat plant food the same way and take in more calories than eating the endproduct. If we really care about food to fight world hunger we would go for World Veganism.

A big part of this food waste problem is how we buy food. In the US and Canada, cities are spread out so you make long drives to these massive grocery stores at the edge of town, and because of that, you tend to stock up for the next week or two weeks. As a result a lot of that food ends up going to waste. It's unsurprising that the US and Canada have the biggest food waste problems which are tied to poor city layout. Compare this to European or denser US cities where grocery stores are on each corner, and since people drive much less, they often buy food in smaller quantities only for the next day or two. Less food gets wasted this way. City planning and zoning can play a huge role in reducing food waste. By using less strict zoning, spreading out grocery stores, and making short trips possible, cities can massively reduce food waste.

This wide car-centered form of living was created due to fear of black crime and lobbying by car & gas companies. One of the things I found to have a gigantic impact is making shopping lists and sticking to them. Usually, my dad would do the groceries by memory, but we’d always end up with a good few products at the end of the week that were spoiled. After he got cancer and couldn’t go into public places, me and my mom took that over and we started making lists because we needed the crutch as to not forget anything. Now, we throw out a bit of rapidly aging fruit (think strawberries and the like)… and that’s about it. Maybe the odd bit of meat that went off before its date, but that is not something we have much influence over.

So big companies prefer to throw away tons of perfect good food to dont have the possibility to get sued. And that's just one more example of absurdities bad politics can do.

But I would stop off at my car on the way to the dumpster to grab this or that and completely forget muffins and donuts in my car all the time. But yeah, honestly I threw the majority of it away except for the blue berry muffins which I loved. My manager threatened to fire people who tried to take anything home or eat anything that was suppose to be thrown out. Also ketchup packets.Some kids just got food because it was free and teachers wanted everyone to eat. Part of that practice is consumer-developed. Almost all consumers look for the perfect apple/orange, etc. and pick only those. Then, other fairly good produce gets turfed at days end simply because it won't sell, even though there is nothing wrong with it. Same with non-perishable food that comes in packages. Damaged can or box? Sits on the shelf. I've tried to commit myself that if I can swing it based on my needs, to buy up products that would otherwise sit on the shelf. A damaged box with food in sealed packages inside or dented can is really a non-issue as long as the food is still fresh/safe and you can open the can. Same with fruit or veg. If I'm using it that night and it's bruised - I don't mind. Expiry date on meat for that evening? Cool. I challenge everyone to do the same where possible. I also keep my fridge only provisioned for 3-5 days at most. This means I shop more often (as it's not inconvenient for me), but can also take transit home than have to flag a taxi. My food is fresher this way, I can buy more good but not perfect product, and I rarely waste food because of it. Also, in the case of a power outage, I also don't have to worry about wasting hundreds of dollars of frozen and refrigerated goods.
@bryntendo
@bryntendo 5 лет назад
Individual people and households do waste a ridiculous amount of food, but the food producers and shops waste an absolutely phenomenally high amount of food. Definitely practice reducing food waste in your own life, but also buy the 'ugly' produce and demand that retailers stop with such crazy food waste too, since they waste more than you'll probably ever even see in your lifetime, in just a short period. There's more than enough food being produced on Earth to make sure nobody ever goes hungry, and tonnes upon tonnes of it is just thrown out before it ever hits the shelves for not meeting aesthetic requirements for retail.

KFC throw away ALL fried chicken that hasn't been sold, after 30mins of being cooked. Which results in each UK KFC branch throwing away three tonnes of chicken a year. It's not just a problem on an individual level. But it's also a huge issue with companies throwing away food. A good way to fix the problem of hunger and food waste, is to push a Law similar to what France has which is to make it illegal for supermarket to throw away food. But to also make sure food chains don't do the same.

People are very embarrassed to ask for "doggy bags", which is just plain daft. Schools/hospitals are the worst culprits... For "hygiene" reasons, food(even unopened packs) cannot be sent back to the kitchens or re- distributed and has to be dumped. It's criminal.

Here are some tips to reduce food waste: -go grocery shopping on a full stomach. If you go being hungry you'll feel inclined to buy more food (which you probably don't need) -if you live with roommates, buy some things collectively (bread, ketchup, cereal) that you know are at risk of going bad if each buys their own -if you're gonna buy a food item you haven't tried before, buy only a little in case you don't like it -don't throw wasted food directly in the trash can, instead throw it in an airtight see-through container. This will help you be conscious about what you throw away -use small plates and small cups. You can always refill them but it will be hard to grab more food than you can finish.

Being from middle east and living in the US, I have had another observation: In developed countries, the production process is more efficient with less waste, but consumers waste a lot, simply because their money can afford this! In developing or under-developed countries, many consumers cannot afford wasting food and the level of wasting it is way lower, but on the other side, the production process is less efficient and more wasteful.

Especially in the Western World, we see food wastage as exclusively our problem, so you’re insight is especially interesting, because most of us haven’t even fully considered the efficiency of production and how it affects food wastage (I’m a Brit btw)

So Much goes into manufacturing of clothes and yet so many go to waste thereby damaging the environment when there are millions of people around the world that could do with decent clothing and not to mention the issues such as child labor that goes on.

In that one statement you can launch into an entire discussion of how over worked we are, how difficult it is to find time due to city/suburban planning, how supermarkets being so much of a trip encourages overbuying, and how deceptive food sale practices all encourage wasteful behaviour.

And food wasting is a problem of the rich. humans are naturally like that, if they have a good life they don't care with their wastes. On the other hand, if you're struggling to get things in life, you're value them more.

Copia should get in touch with Uber. They could use their carpool or food delivery service to pick up food and drop it off along routes it is already taking. It would save Copia time and energy, while increasing food delivery. Pitch it to Uber as a strong PR move; believe me, with all the bad press they're getting, they'll take it immediately! If not go to Lyft, etc.

I think refrigerator is a great point and unnoticed one too. Because when we see empty fridge or less food as compared to space in fridge. It gives sense of scarce and thus more food purchase plus available storage option. Big size plate is a point too, as per simple psychology we compare the amount of food on plate with the size of plate, we do it unknowingly and notice only major change in plate sizes.

This is a big problem of the western world. Here in India, homes contribute to a very small portion of the total food waste. If we think that the food is not good for human consumption, we feed it to stray animals and the animals are more than happy and it doesn't even affect their health. Food wastage is discouraged by our culture and we are happy that it isn't too big of an issue atleast here.

Reminded me of old times when I worked as a waiter and at the end of each shift we had to through away all the leftover food. Some delicious and also expensive desserts went straight to trashbag. So behind single consumers and those, who order food for some events, there is also a whole industry to change.

I used to work in airline catering, and there is a lot of wasted food, water, and disposable utensils. They try to reuse some unopened products, but still much of it goes to waste. The recyclables that the stewards/stewardesses collect in these bags end-up going in the trash as well. I wish there was something that can be done about that.

I work at the food distribution center for a major national grocer and it should be known that suppliers/vendors are a large part of the problem. Earlier today we were overshipped 4 skids of strawberries. Vendor decided it would've been more expensive to send a refrigerated truck to pick them up and redistribute, but also didn't want us donating or giving it away as it would devalue their other product by increasing supply. We had to trash 500kg of perfectly good strawberries. I wish this was the exception but its really the norm.
