The Domestic Geek Such a blast and was so great to meet you too! Even if it was a million degrees out! We'll have to send you over some more Tayto too! :)
Nanaimo bars are insanely Canadian but they don't really travel well, and they're my favourite dessert. Also, only found (and done well) in Eastern Canada. The donair. So. Good. Spiced meat formed into a log, shaved, and put into a pita with raw onions and tomato with donair sauce. Which is an evaporated milk (which sounds weird) sauce.
I laughed when Donal mimicking Sara's "A butter tarts?" And his reaction when eat the butter tart is priceless! My favorite part is definitely when he eats butter tart but overall this video is very fun to watch and thank you for the information about Canadian snacks. Love love 😋
I met up with a really good friend and caused a lot of chaos in town, then came home to two of my favorite cooking channels doing a colab! Best day ever!!!!
As a Canuck (Canadian) I have never heard of some of those snacks❗️I did, however, see the President's Choice logo, so I am soon off to Loblaws, a chain that carries their brand, to get peanut butter pretzles and poutine flavoured chips. Thank you ohhhh thank you😎🎆💥⚡️🍫💫
Nanaimo Bars. Maple Syrup candies (like the small maple leaf ones that are basically hard maple syrup). And you should have told him about the snow syrup where you pour the boiling syrup onto snow and eats it with a Popsicle stick. All dressed chips, and of course, ketchup chips.
I was actually watching a cooking channel in Turkey and donal skehan came on, and the voice was dubded over in turkish, i had no idea he had a youtube channel. He is so adorable.
poutine is actually from Quebec. It's a street food, most commonly eaten as a late night snack. This snack tasting video was actually fun... Maybe, because I'm Canadian. :P
never been to Canada not even heard about these snacks but I want to go there right now!!!!! They sound soooo goooood. Happy to see you both in the video, great youtubers! Thanks for sharing :)
Just one miss I think, but it would also have been tricky to travel with - Beavertails! Deep fried dough with brown sugar, cinammon and a squeeze of lemon. With a hot chocolate, on a cold afternoon after working up a sweat on the canal - perfection!
In the west, we say "poo-teen" I feel kinda silly now :-) There is actually a restaurant here in Vancouver that serves just poutine....all different kinds of toppings on french fries. Fast food heaven!
Besides butter tarts, the other thing my Canadian born step-son can't get in Texas is date squares - or some would say matrimonial squares. Don't now if anyone across the pond knows about them... Nanaimo bars also great!
I can honestly say as a Canadian that I detest our maple deserts, they're ungodly sweet. I also detest ketchup chips but Hawkins Cheezies make up for it. I could eat two whole bags in one sitting they're so good. Those weren't even good butter tarts hahah. You have to try homemade butter tarts they're to die for. Nanaimo Bars are easier to make I think and also delicious.
The Domestic Geek In Wisconsin, USA, the Maple cookies and peanut butter pretzels are pretty darn popular also. Maple cookies have been a favorite of mine since childhood. Of course, we're just a hop, skip and a jump from Canada too ;)
French Canadians have traveled to many parts of North America. Their cultural influence and cusine has been an influence. We have poutine in Alberta, Canada too. So good! I don't recall having maple cream biscuits. I must try them.
I don't know if anyone is interested but butter tarts are most likely a variation of the old scottish dessert ecclefechan tarts. The pioneers would have had difficulty accessing or storing the other ingredients used in the filling and the butter tart with no extra dried fruit or nuts or more scantly used raisins or walnuts were used instead. I would love to find out about other recipes like this that evolved to find a distinct separation from the original due to circumastances and geography if anyone knows of more similar please comment and tell me. I hope everyone is having a nice day! :)
This was great I would recommend some more Canadian staples like- ketchup chips, maple fudge, beaver tails, Nanaimo bars, and real poutine if you could gets your hands on it because the experience is so so much more different than the chips :) (although I do understand your troubles)
I'm only at the first treat - butter tarts! I just ate 2 the other day.. They are the bomb!! I eat the edges first... then the sweet richness of the middle - YUM!! :D
+Saintly2 Thanks for the craisin and raisin overnight soak in brandy idea! My Mom's tart recipe is the best - runny and no corn syrup. I also have another good one from a colleague - loves when she bring some to work!
Hello!? Ketchup chips and Nanaimo bars? Salmon jerky? Or salmon candy? (Maybe more westcoast, not sure). I think of poutine as a Quebec specialty all Canadians enjoy.
I want to try those chocolates and peanut butter pretzel. Look so yummy :) Anyway, it's better if you can shoot closer to the snacks, so we can see it more details. *myopinion* :D
