I taste tested the BEST British ciders for my first-ever blind taste test! Can I guess which ciders are which..?? Probably not.
If you're an expat in the UK like me, do yourself a favour and taste test as many British food and drinks as possible! In my humble opinion, the UK has some of the best ciders in the world!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

"Bulmers Original! I would have never guessed." GLUG! Comedy gold. My favourite is the 8.2% Westons. Neck two bottles and you can forget the night ever happened. Total night-night juice.

I gave Strongbow an F because it's the worst! lol I'm so glad you liked our Ciders from "hurfudshuuuure"! We make the best cider! I will fight anyone who says otherwise! All the Ciders were either made by Bulmers or Westons. The Bulmers factory is less than a mile from where I live and in the summer, the whole city smells like cider! Woop! Go hurfudshuuuure!

I didn’t think Woodpecker cider was still made. For those of us of a certain age it was definitely our first experience drinking alcohol as a teenager. I remember being very ill drinking that, would never touch it again 🤢

Woodpecker and Olde English put me off cider for life, a teenager in the 80s 😂
@dprid
@dprid 2 года назад
Yep, Woodpecker used to be my drink of choice late 70s & early 80s, when most pubs only ever had Woodpecker or Strongbow, and seldom both. Then my local started to stock an unlabelled cider that I think was brewed in someone's bathtub on one of the local farms. It was much cheaper and tasted ok, and 3 pints had me on the floor!

You have to be careful with local cider that's been made in someone's barn. If it says scrumpy on the bottle, better pre-book your ambulance.

Oh my! Woodpecker used to be the underage drinkers "let's-get-pissed-on-Saturday-night" alcohol of choice back when I was a teenager. It was cheap, came in 2 litre pop bottles and was so sweet it didn't taste like booze. This was 50 years ago, so it's been around for a while!

A standard of Pubs and Hotel bars for many. many years when the only question from the bar staff when someone ordered cider was dry or sweet? I am going back 42 years here when I served behind bars at the start of my career in hotel and pub management.
@DaveBartlett

Of all the ciders sampled, Bulmers Woodpecker is probably the most filtered, most pastuerised cider available, and yet it was Alanna's favourite. That's a bit like a real ale enthusiast plumping for a gassy lager as their beverage of choice.

You twice thought Thatchers but they were not there, however you obviously know the brand and if you ever get down this way call in to the farm and try there rough (scrumpy) cider. Somerset is the true home of cider. There are also small makers with excellent ciders of their own.
@georgedyson9754
@georgedyson9754 16 дней назад
I can remember clearly as a student at Exeter University, going to a village called Thorverton, north of Exeter, and the bar man suggested I try a glass from a barrel in the corridor outside the bar. Silly me - that had to be the most alcoholic drink I have ever had. Scrumpy indeed! All the folks in the pub had a quick chuckle as another student fell prey to what was no doubt a common stunt.

Woodpecker is what you drink while 13, down the park, with your mates, 40 years ago. It was easy to acquire then, as some retailers thought of it as a kids drink, as did some adults.

'Woodpecker' cider is tasty enough. During my youth it was classified as the weak person's cider before you graduated to 'Strongbow' cider. Looking back now they are both more chemically enhanced and bear little/no resemblance to real cider (scrumpy) like 'Old Rosie'. Great cider selection from Herefordshire (HehRaFordshurr).

Hiya. Back in the day, we used to have Woodpecker as the sweet cider to offset the bitterness of the stout (Guinness) when ordering a Stout & Cider Black Velvet. Other stouts are available. A bottle of each mixed together (obviously) would give you a pint and it's quite a 'heavy' drink. Stay safe. All the best to you.

I thought that after that cider testing session, you would be up on the worktop, dancing and swinging your glasses over your head laughing.....:) But no... This was another delightful video 😂. Very entertaining lol ., So fun. I'm a bit more of a beer drinker myself and extremely rarely touch a cider, but this is the thing about blinding yourself...I mean blindsiding, I mean blind tests, you never know. 🤭Thing is, so much actually goes into an experience of something: it's the setting, the shape of the glass you drink, even up to the thickness of the glass.!...and it's also the temperature of the drink and what you drinking for and other things happening around you. ...it all concludes factors in ones choice and understandings of things. Mindset, is the most potent ingredients.

Such a fun idea, thanks to Elly and Lily! I had Bulmers and Woodpecker cider when I was younger, before cider became fashionable again, I think Magners played a part in that revival. I'm a little surprised that you've never had Woodpeckers cider before as it's been around for such a long time. Strongbow and Woodpeckers used to be the most common ciders. That said there has been an explosion of 'better' ciders over the last few years so maybe it is not quite trendy enough these days. Great video Alanna (as all of your alcohol videos are! 😂)

Thanks so much! I've never seen Woodpecker before - apparently it's a bit harder to find these days!

Way back when I worked in the assay lab in a remote iron/copper mine in B.C. the chemist was an Englishman named Albert. His drink of choice was cider in in the townsite beer parlour. It was either that or very old bottled beer. When Albert retired the lab and mill staff organized a cider bash and flew in a whack of different kinds; I'm pretty sure there was Woodpecker in the haul. Came the day and we all gathered in a house and surprised Albert with the party. He arrived and promptly asked for a gin and tonic. He explained that he only drank cider because it was better than the dodgy beer. There we were loaded to the gills with cider and the only guy who regularly drank it wasn't having any. Cider hangovers are pretty grim.

Strongbow used to be very dry whilst Woodpecker was sometimes too sweet. All changed now

Loved Alanna trying to pronounce Herefordshire (I think that's what she was saying) its funny when she was burping and slurring her words

Fascinating... next time I drink Strongbow I'll wrap in in a black bag and see if it tastes better.
