bunny chow dish is popular in durban south africa , gatsby(consists of a huge roll with french fries with either steak or chicken, egg and salads) is a cape town thing
Bunny Chow originated in Durban where South Africa's largest Indian population resides. The curries are way more spicier compared to the rest of South Africa, from my experience.
It is similar in flavour and heat but i like how if i eat Bunny chow in durban how it does not give me heart burn. when it comes to flavour profile it's similar to what my family makes but eastern food bazaar doesnt come close to the taste.
Because she is from the Cape, don't know a "bunny chow". If from Kwa Zulu Natal, it is normal chow. You can't go without a bunny chow at least two to three times a month. Yummy!
lol searched for tourists coming to south Africa to see what they have to say. I'm from Cape Town and I've never had any of that in my life except for the ostrich
We are so diverse, you can spend years here and never truly experience the food, I am literally talking as a South African who lives here... We have such a mish mash of cultures, even each major city has a favourite street food, e.g. Joburg Korta, Durban Bunny Chow and Cape Town Gatsby
whenever I see a "Bunny chow" outside of kzn...I am always like WTF is that....Some put fish and chips others have peas with a mild stew that many mistake for a curry....
Beans..Either Sugar beans or Butter beans curry(I love butter beans),then we have the least popular Chicken curry bunny..and my favorite Mutton curry.also the Vegetable bunny for those who don't eat meat..
I love you and this video you are the first tourist to acculy pronounce stuff right thank you also love how u had a Athuntic Jol(party or good party or good fun) with the Athuntic music Edit:Ostrich is also amazing when cooked amazing also Chakalaka is also a spice that can be used in mince or meat it doesn't have to be a salad
Michael you almost tasted South African food but you just went on the mountains you need to get down to the foundations of South Africa at KZN, Eastern Cape, Limpompo and met a real South African with real South African food and eat UMPHOKOQO, UMQA, UMFINO, UMGQUSHO, IBHANQA, AMACEBA, ULUSU, UMBENGO WEHAGU WENKOMO WEGUSHA and many more.
need to have an open mind when encountering south africa. it has a lot of european/british/dutch roots. The local african cuisine is an entire subject on it's own. this country is impossible to define.
Uhm...which part was South African???. Bunny chow...best in Durban. We dont eat lintels and samp...maybe samp and beans. Even the beer is only had at traditional African events ans are supposed to be made from sorghum and more pinkish of colour. Chakalaka spot on..but only as a side dish with pap. We eat braai vleis/siza nama(bbq) and pap...always pap. And in Cape Town you eat the Gatsby. So a very poor touristy crap food tour
Very good video, but why do Americans speak so fast? I wish to relax when viewing this kind of foody and human interaction clip, especially when it is in my beloved , beautiful and wonderful Cape Town!
A bunny chow was a dish created by the Indian indentured labourers that the British brought to South Africa to work in the sugar cane fields in KwaZulu Natal. Back in the day when plastic bags wasn’t a thing, the labourers carried lunch into the field so the loaf of bread was hollowed out and filled with curry. And plugged with the bread that was removed. Bunny Chow in Cape Town is very watered down but if you have it in Durban you will get the best version of the dish.
I am South African living overseas. And yeah I get it why people think White people are boring. Didn't know there was a South African alive of that age who hasn't had Bunny Chow. Like which Ostrich farm were you living under.
I can't believe she never had a bunny chow we South Africans love bunny shows. I cant eat them often because ill get fat but its very delicious. It's an Indian South African dish.
Buddy you did not have any cape town Gatsbys!!! Therefore, not an inclusive summary of all traditional food!!!!maybe next time try out golden dish and Mariam Masalsa full house gatsby
The Bunny Chow's name has Gujurati origins, apparently. It meant something completely different (maybe "bread curry" or something like that), and people misheard the name or made a joke out of it, even? Like how Hot Dog started out as a joke. I read the full details on the Internet once, but have lost the link. If yours was too mild for you, try the ones they have at *Some Like It Hot* in Hillcrest next time you're here. It's origins would've just been as a food portable enough to take to work, with the clever twist that you can eat the container. Umqombothi is not a dairy product. It's sorghum beer, originally - with maize added later when that reached Southern Africa. It would probably be closer to what you know as "beer" if it was strained and clarified more, but it's "food beer", so the crushed grain is left in suspension. Maybe if there was a version which added hops it would be even closer to what's familiar. It's one of those things you have to give time to acclimatize to - just like you probably had to acclimatize to things like beer and wine when you were a youngster, and they still tasted horrible to you. Climate is the wrong word, but it'll do. Nice thing is that it's low alcohol. 2% or lower. For a South African chain take-away that produces great food, try Nandos. Hot Peri Peri chicken (Portuguese), mild lemon chicken, all flame grilled, and no batter. And then there's biltong ...
If you ever switch between traditional beer and normal beer, watch out! lol! For some reason drinking both gets you really drunk, really fast! PS Come back to SA! It would be awesome to see videos from the coast and then inland. I unfortunately haven't traveled my country as much as I'd like, but everywhere I've been I've met the most awesome and welcoming people.
You wanna eat bunny chow, you never ever ever eat it in CT. That Dbn, PMB style food. Best bunnies is KZN. Have a gatsby in CT. Have good seafood in Gauteng
Ohhh a lot. In my country (Argentina) you can have one of best meats in the world (cow) from $3-7 USD per KG (2.2 lbs) Even for us it's a little bit expensive because in my region we are full of cows so it's not the best price but for people from other countries it's almost free LOL
