Tata Steel: Thousands of workers at Britain's biggest steelworks to lose jobs despite £500m subsidy

Thousands of workers being made redundant at Britain's biggest steelworks will receive at least £20,000 under government intervention to reduce the fallout from the closure of its blast furnaces.
Labour, which had expressed hope in opposition to reduce the number of redundancies, confirmed its intervention in government had failed to secure a rethink on the company's plans.
The last blast furnace currently used to produce steel is being closed and an electric arc furnace, which requires less labour, will be built to replace it.

The Steel Plant has been a Loss making Venture for Tata and people are angry that Tata wants to give up? I think people are confusing about Loss = Profit in Finance. Then again, it's Britain.

Tata is doing brilliantly in India because like China and Russia,India's labour costs are very low.The subsidies given by these countries to big businesses are huge as compared to European markets.Keir Starmer is more interested in backing Chinese companies,but with Chinese companies their engineers and labour force will be brought from China to make the business more profitable.

Why do they keep on saying we are gonna lose up to 3000 jobs it's a lot more then that, it's close to 12000 jobs between TATA workers and contractors and that's not even mentioning people who work in the surrounding areas and any supply chain that feeds in to the steelworks

Starmer never said a word when this was announced & nearly 3000 would lose their jobs. The Labour of years ago would have kicked off big time at TATA & the government. I expect Starmer was celebrating a win for net zero. I was made redundant years ago that £20K pay off won't last long unless they can find other jobs quick.

By the way a electric arc furnace is only GREEN if the electricity is produced from renewable sources-your UK plant is probably going to use Gas to produce electricity & in Jamshedpur-India by 2028 the Tata Group is well on it's way to using Hydrogen so the upcoming Electric Arc Furnace will be OBSOLETE by 2035 or 2037 anyway

An Euro luxury hotel shares. And everyone of these ventures has lost money Then he buys costly shares in an Indon. coal miner which got nationalized. After 10 years he got 10% of the invst back He started a micro car division in his group car company which bombed He is still revered as an icon. Hats off

Also this steel plant failed to generate any profits from past 14 years a detail which this report very conveniently forgets the plant is simply not competitive enough but still the Tatas decided to keep pushing it until 14 years to see if the government can help don't know if any other business would do the same
@TheBooban
@TheBooban 2 дня назад
@@namansawhney9013 if it was profitable, they wouldn’t have allowed the sale to Tata. Tata should have been faster to modernize it, but wanted government to do it. I’m surprised the UK govt. didn’t fall for it. But I still don’t think the UK will allow it to go under. If the UK government has to pay for modernization, it should be nationalized.

Surely the choice is EAF or no steel. The EAF will be far more efficient; turning all the scrap we have in the UK and coming from all those rigs that get decommissioned in the North Sea. It will boost productivity which is what our economy needs. As for those made redundant, there are thousands of jobs calling for guys and gals to rebuild the Grid and install wind turbines, the country needs 50,000 heat pump installers. Go grab those jobs. I left my home town at the age of 20 and moved for jobs 4 times in my working life.

As an Indian I feel a company coming from far away land to trade and then exploiting local resources and people, using connections in the ruling class to extract undue benefits, essentially damaging the local economy and then bailing on the people once venture becomes unprofitable is wrong. I cannot think of any British company doing such a thing. Spare a thought for the people and the local towns. Those places would take a long time to recover. I mean what is next?
