Tate McRae & Kathryn McCormick Routine: "She Used to Be Mine"-Sara Bareilles | Choreo by Travis Wall Tate McRae - Top 8 Perform + Elimination | SYTYCD The Next Generation 13x09
This reads to me like a mother and daughter duo (or sisters) where the mother is dysfunctional and in pain and inflicted it upon her daughter too. Her daughter does try to lift her mother and tries to lessen the hurt but it only furthers hurt them both. The mother then starts begging her to stay but she refuses and laments on how toxic everything is. In a moment of weakness they try to rekindle but fail, and the daughter leaves her mother and the toxic environment, finally
This is what I perceived too. I have a strained relationship with my mom, and this is how I see it playing out 😢 beautiful dance! And you’re very well written!
it does not really matter tho. The song in the musical is reflecting how we change based on out surroundings. there is a similar story being told. Also they are just using the music and interpreting how they see it. It is not related to the musical at all. Dance and the performing arts is about individual connection with the sonf and what it means to them.
Like someone said in the comments already for this, Sara definitely gave her blessing when she recording a version specifically for this song to be performed to by these two. No, the song isn't about *this*, I've actually performed this song many times but the version from the musical with the "dear baby" part at the beginning and unfortunately, I can relate to the song in the same way Jenna's character did in the show.... But it's a beautiful song that can definitely be up for interpretation. It's like when another one of Sara's songs was performed on this show. Any song can mean whatever you want it to mean if you feel like it suits you in some way, even if that's not what the song is about 🤷🏻♀️ but it's a beautiful dance piece and a gorgeous song, so let's just be grateful it exists because I remember when this came out, I had never heard this song and didn't know of waitress the musical until I saw this and now that show is literally one of my favourite musicals that's ever been made! 😁
