Thank you soo much ,at the beginning thought it was a difficult design but the instructions and the video was so clear that a beginner in tatting like me could do it .superb
I made a practice piece and smiled with delight as I tatted the second round after my mock picot. The ring was closed and I then read about where to place the magic loop. Oops. Still...I got it and it was so much fun tatting with two shuttles simultaneously! I may slip a piece of non-skid shelf liner between them or fold over a piece of painters tape between them. Thank you for a fresh take/look at ways to tat in ends!
Hi Maria, I can only say (as I mentioned in the video) that although I love magic loops... I too regularly forget to put them in! Your idea of placing a piece of non-slip something between the two shuttles is good, let me know how that works. Maybe just a small piece of blue tack would work too. Though I find that with a bit of practice, it's not too difficult just holding them together as they are. Thank you for your comment! :-)
Hi, I've made a couple small doilies a few years ago and just this week picking up my shuttles again. I use your awesome shuttles too! They make tatting fun for sure but I have a question today about the thread twisting and turning as I close the rings. I'm always tugging on that thread to close it. 3 or 4 times and sometimes I have to wrap the thread around my hand to get a good pull. Then the stitches look wonky. What am I doing wrong? Is it the way I'm winding the thread onto the bobbin?
Hi Carol, I wonder if it's your thread that's the problem? I've had that problem with some threads before, they just seem to be "twisty"! I had a particularly bad ball of Venus thread that kept doing that and I just gave up and threw it away. Or else your stitches are too tight? This would also make pulling your rings closed more difficult. The other things to consider also would be the way you wind your thread on your bobbin - sometimes as we wind, we add twist to the thread and that could cause problem. It might be worth trying to wind one bobbin by rolling it (I show that in one of my videos) to make sure it doesn't affect the twist of your thread. I hope one of these suggestions might help!
@@11Frivole Thank you for your reply. Now that you mention it I do remember seeing your video on adding thread by rolling the bobbin. I'll try that. I'll loosen up my stitches as well. :)
Oh it is a lovely design. Especially because it makes a square pattern when joined. I had been searching for a pattern like this either crochet or tatting from which I could make a square form when joined but was unsuccessful. Thank you for uploading this. The picots give such a classic lacy look exactly what I was looking for. Now all I need is a second tatting needle to begin this project- being a beginner I only have one.
In the part where you make the 1st Josephine Knot, I had a hard time seeing where you connected it to. It would have been better if you did a close up on that particular part. Thank you for taking the time showing how this is made.
Esther Ogozaly Hi Esther, I usually try to include close-ups (in my most recent videos) but I’m away at the moment and the last two videos were edited just on my phone where I’m much more limited. The JK is always attached on the left to the last picot of the previous ring and then there is just one more picot on the right... to which the first picot of the next ring will be attached.
Hi Juliet, you can use different things but I particularly like beading thread like Fireline which is very fine, incredibly strong and also has "memory" so you can bend it out of the way. I have other videos specifically on magic loops, one I made just recently about how to make the knot. You'll find them on my channel. Happy tatting! :-)
Is it possible to make this doing needle tatting? I can use shuttle but it's very difficult I have damage to my fingers and it's almost impossible to keep hold of the shuttle for me... I love this pattern and would love to be able too make it. Ty I love watching you work
Hello Patricia, yes, this could be made with a needle but as I'm not a needle tatter myself, I'm not able to demonstrate (I "can" needle tat but I'm not nearly as efficient as I am with my shuttles!) There is one split ring in this pattern but apart from that, it's all just rings so I can't see why it couldn't easily be made with a needle. :-)
Beautiful! As I am watching you I notice that when you are making rings your working thread is not getting smaller. My working thread gets small very quickly and I am constantly pulling on it to obtain more space to pass my shuttle through. Can you show/tell the technique you use to avoid having to pull down on the working thread so often? Thanks so much!!
What an interesting comment Samantha! It caused me to grab my shuttle straight away and tat a ring to think about what I was doing as I tat. And the answer is that of course, as for you, my working thread (or the thread wrapped around my hand for a ring) is getting smaller as I tat the stitches. But what is probably not visible is that I'm continually pulling on the core thread with my little finger at the same time as pushing the stitches along with my thumb and forefinger as I tat. I also keep letting a bit of thread out of my shuttle as I work too and that's one big reason why I like using my La Cossette shuttles because it's easy to do so with them (without any noise, or having to stop to unwind thread). So it "looks" like my working thread is not getting smaller but it is, it's just that I keep adjusting as I tat, instead of stopping to do so. Perhaps I should make a video, with slow-motion, to show how that works? Or can you picture it?
Thank you so much!! I can picture it but I would LOVE a slow motion video just to make sure that I have it correct. In the meantime, I am going to practice!
Hello Joe, nice to hear you enjoyed the leaf video too. To add the squares together, you would join them at the second free picot of the corner rings. If you freeze the video right at the start where you can see the four squares together, you can see where the squares are joined together at the corners. I'm sorry I thought I'd mentioned joining them in the video but it looks like I didn't! Oversight on my part.
Hi Anastasya, it really shouldn't be so tight that it hurts your fingers! You need to pull each knot enough so that they are firm and even but not really tight. :-)
Hello Malena, it's a good question! I'm sorry I didn't explain why I do that in the video but the reason is because I found it looked better that way: joining to picot before and after the large ring means the ring is better centered over the corner.
ive been trying learn tatting for a couple of months i am completely frustrated and dont want to give it up because i love the way it looks! Any suggestions?
Hi Tina, where do you go wrong? Right at the beginning? Or elsewhere? Are you able to flip your knots and get rings to close? Have you watched my beginners' video? I hope you don't give up! Please don't despair! :-)
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cmXt7GLfzAs.html I'm a shuttle tatter. I taught myself from a book so I know the frustration of trying to learn. I recommend this video and there are others, but I sent this one to my daughter for her to learn and my 7 yr. old grand daughter. There is also a video #3 from this lady and one I couldn't find that shows how to load the shuttle. If these don't work try video's from Karen Cabrera at entrelanzaderas.blogspot.com/2010/10/clases-de-frivolite-tatting-lessons.html

Please. Give us a close camera to see when you joint whit the first circle done when you star. I try several time and the thread is stocked , doesn't run. Please, is sooo beautifully. I want to do it
Hi Flora, I'm not sure where you mean? Do you mean when I join the 4th centre ring to the 1st? That last ring is a split ring and the second half needs to be made with unflipped stitches, I wonder whether it's where you may be going wrong? You can make the video full screen, and then zoom in more if you need and you can also slow down the video with the little "settings" wheel to help you see better.
I can easily. Follow. Notikaland and crochet knitting. If it is done on the same speed I will be very happy I am keen on making your pattern.and frame it . It is so beautiful. Thanks
Hello, here is a link to a blogpost I made about this square so you can perhaps see better in the photos: leblogdefrivole.blogspot.com/2018/08/new-square-pattern.html There are 7 picots on the corner rings, the first and last are attached to the Josephine rings which leaves 5 free picots. When you join your squares, you use the 3rd and 5th picots of the large rings to attach your new squares to (or the 2nd and 4th free picots). I hope that makes sense!
I have learnt about this video so much, but I haven't got so developed shuttles, I haven't seen in my country yet. And a bit it is difficult to me but I will practice it. Thank you.
The shuttles I use are Aero-type which I modify and decorate myself so you may be able to find them (they are usually plain grey plastic) if you want to try them but of course, any type of shuttle will do. Thank you for your comment!
I could not get my last thread to come through on the magic loop. My thread broke. Also, do you have detailed video on connecting additional squares together, sides and corners?
Hello Pandora, sorry I didn't get back to you quickly enough but glad to hear you got it sorted out! You are right that it's important to make sure your stitches on the last chain are not too tight, and especially the very last half stitch. :-)
@@11Frivole You are a dear person. I love watching your videos and I have learned how to tat thanks to you. Please continue to share. I would love to do a tat-a-long with you on something interesting like a doily or even a bookmark or something that I could give away as a gift. People are amazed at the one shuttle edging that I do. I take it everywhere I go. I have not tried to attach it to the pillow cases I intend to do sometime in the future. I just keep going, and going. Thank you so much. Really.
@@pandoradestiny8325 It's my pleasure and thank you very much for your lovely comment. I'm glad you're enjoying making the one-shuttle edging. Such a nice small thing to easily have in your pocket or bag and bring out at any opportunity to make a few more stitches. Have you seen the latest series of videos I have just recently finished? It is a tat-along for the whole of the Victorian Trellis Doily from start to finish. And I plan on doing more in the future. :-)
Your channel has been fantastic in learning how to tat! I'm going back through your videos and trying all of the different motifs to practice new techniques, I've only practiced split rings on their own and not in a pattern before so this will be my first time incorporating them into a bigger design! Also, your shuttles are lovely. Are you still making and selling them?
Hi Gabriela, thank you for your comment, I'm always glad to hear that the videos are useful. Yes, I still make shuttles though I've been on a break during the holidays but will start again soon!
@@11Frivole I will keep an eye out. I have two plastic shuttles that have been working great so far, but I'm looking forward to investing into some nicer ones soon.
Hi Joanne, I'm sorry the shuttle is not working out for you but I'm afraid I'm just not a needle specialist and would not be able to demonstrate it with confidence.
This is so beautiful. I like your video. Can I ask were can I find the pattern for this. I get lost on the video and I have to get back so many times. Thank you
Hi Melanie, there is a link to the pattern in the information box below the video (you probably need to click on "show more" to see all the information).
Hello, I see that you write your patterns in a different format from that which I have been working from. What does the / denote? I understand that 3-3 means three double stitches, a picot and three double stitches. So does the / mean join? And if the / appears in the first ring then there is nothing to join it to. Perhaps you can point me to where I can find these abbreviations?
Hi Lin, the / means split ring. So 3/3 is a split ring with 3 stitches on each side. I used a split ring in this design to be able to move from the first to the second round without having to cut and tie. :-)
I use plastic Aerlit tatting shuttles, and my shuttles start to wear down and loose tension, does that happen with your Aero shuttles? I tried to find them on eBay but I couldn’t.
Hi Krisjin, no that's why I prefer Aeros. I find they keep their tension much better than other shuttles. They occasionally come up on Ebay so I hope you'll be able to find yourself some. To be fair, I found the originals (the made in England ones) a bit too tight and the ratchet sound quite noisy so I prefer the more recent productions of Aero shuttles. It can get confusing figuring out which ones are which! :-)
Hi Anju, do you just mean closing a ring? If you are a beginner, I have a popular beginners video that explain how to make stitches and make sure the thread slides so you can close the loop. You can view it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWdbxK-NuNY.html If I've misunderstood you, please write again. :-)
Wonderful, makes a rather dense lace when connected, love it! Have you tried connecting in one piece as both squares and diamonds? Would it work? I’ve learned so much just watching you. Thanks for the video!
Hi, yes, I tried and there is a very small sample on my blog that shows what it would look like, scroll towards the bottom of this post and you'll see it: leblogdefrivole.blogspot.com/2018/08/new-squarediamond.html
I'm sorry but this is meant to be for beginners, I can needle tat but you are going too fast, I can't see how you put the shuttle through it is so fast it looks like you are putting it in and out the same way each time, I was hoping to learn how to shuttle tat
Hello Janet, I don't think it is stated anywhere that this design is for beginners? This square requires knowledge of split rings for one and also shows another more advanced technique (using two shuttles one on top of the other to hide ends) so I would not say it is for beginners. I do work the stitches at normal speed because this video is to show how to work the overall design and not how to make the individual stitches. If you would like to learn to shuttle tat, I do have a beginners' video that shows how to make the stitches slowly, it can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWdbxK-NuNY.html On my channel, I also have other beginners videos. I hope this helps! :-)
One thing that helped me is stopping frequently to catch up and also there is a setting in the lower right of the video, it looks like a gear. You can set the playback speed to 0.25 of the original speed. She sounds drunk, but it makes it alot easier to see what is going on and she really did a great job filming it. Hope that helps.
Update: I found that it depends on what you use to watch the video, to be able to adjust the speed. I have the option on my laptop, but not on my notebook, it doesn't appear on the gear (settings).
Hi Cindy, thank you, and for the shuttles, I make them myself - they are modified and decorated Aeros. I have been selling them for many years in my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/lacossette) but am currently taking a break due to other commitments. Best wishes!
What do you use for your magic loop? I have been using an item made for flossing with braces, but I only get one, maybe two uses from them before they break - seems wasteful if something better is available! :)
@@rla8125 as long as I am tatting with size 70 and larger thread like 40 or size 20 I use DMC size 80 thread folded in half. I know it is tatting thread, but it is a good 6 ply tatting cotton and it makes a wonderful magic loop!! They hold up to many uses, and if you move around some on the folded thread and don't use the same folded spot on the thread they last even longer! I use several colors if I have to hide more than one thread it makes it easier to know where every thing will go.
@@rla8125 hi. I’m sorry I didn’t answer you before because I had never actually used the method. I have since tried and love it for hiding the thread. I’ve used both a smaller thread than the one I’m using and a jewelling wire. I’ve found if you pull the ring tight, it’s nearly impossible to pull the magic loop through.
It depends what I'm using a half stitch for. For making Josephine Knots for example, I would use the second half. Was I using a single half stitch in this video? I'm giving a quick answer here as I'm not able to watch the whole video to search just now but let me know if that doesn't answer your question.
0m The magic loop , I did not get it ,is it a very thin wire. This is the first time I am noticing this magic loop is the magic loop used for stiffening The work? I am new to the instruction in the blog I am old timer I used to read the instruction from the book and do it ie shuttle and the ball You are using two shuttles I find it difficult to follow I started doing tatting in 1970 . This speaks a lot If the no of rings and picot appears as and when you are doing on the screen. It will be easy for me to follow . Again. I'm sorry, Please be little slow when you are doing . Thank you
Hi Nirmala, did you see that you can print the pattern so you can follow along? Does that help? I've not thought of adding the number of stitches on the screen. The magic loop is only used to hide your thread ends, it does not stay in the work. I do tat at normal speed in the videos where I show how to make patterns as otherwise the videos would be too long. I'm sorry if that makes it a bit difficult to follow along. Wishing you all the best with tatting! :-)
Jane Emmerson Hi Jane, I’m sorry but I’m not a needle tatter and I’m afraid would not do a very good job of demonstrating this with a needle. I can needle tat but am so much more efficient with my shuttles! :-)
Hi Jane, after my previous reply, I wondered whether I'd misunderstood your question... I'm sure you can make this with a needle if that's what you were asking, although I don't know how easy it is to make a split ring with a needle. I've never tried it I'm afraid. Apart from that, the whole design is just rings so I'm sure it must be fine with a needle.
Frivole thank you for your honest answer. I taught myself needle tatting watching RU-vid, but with the shuttles they look so complicated. I hope to try one day soon. Thank you!
Hi Jane, perhaps shuttles do look a little more complicated to start off than using a needle... the most difficult part for some people is getting how to do "the flip", or the transferring of the knot. I do have a video specifically on that, where I go really slowly and work with big cord to make it as easy to understand as possible. Of course, if you're happy with your needle, just keep going! But you shouldn't be put off trying shuttles, hopefully you'll find it's not as difficult as you fear. :-)
Frivole thank you for helping me. I have shuttles, but haven’t ventured out to try them. I have watched many videos and get a little intimidated by it, but love the end result. My grandmother used to tat, but never shared her art to my mother and I was just too young to care. I never knew needle tatting existed, it’s nice but I think shuttle tatting is more intricate. I just have to get up enough nerve to try it. I will check out your videos. Thank God for RU-vid and people like you to give instructions.

@@11Frivole just so you know I have done multiple searches for needle tatting patterns on you tube and just keep being shown stuff for shuttle tatting. This is getting frustrating!
@@elishevareynolds1445 Hi Elisheva, I'm sorry to hear that! I really believed that you'd find many on RU-vid. How about videos like this one?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mYIKwf9Mzdc.html I had a quick look too and I can see that there are many more for shuttle tatting but there are still some for the needle. I'm afraid although I can do a bit of needle tatting, I'm really no expert and feel much more comfortable with my shuttles. I can only do basic needle tatting and wouldn't know how to show all the techniques I can do with a shuttle. Good luck!
Hello, I do have a couple of videos that show how to add thread, one I made recently shows how to add thread when working a one-shuttle design and another shows how to add thread with "helpers". You can find these videos on my channel but it would be a good idea to make a video specifically on adding thread as there are several ways of doing it. I'll add it to my list! :-)
Hi Annette, if you stop the video and examine the image of the joined squares, you will see that they are joined at the second picot of the large corner rings.

Hi Nirmala, I'm sorry I don't understand all your queries... do you mean you would like the number of stitches to appear on the video? There is a link to download the whole pattern where you will get the information about the number of stitches. It's in the information box below the video. The magic loops? They are made using Fireline (6lb). Best wishes.
Hi Georgina, the video shows how to join the squares together so all you need to do is tat as many as you like to get to the size doily that suits you.
Hi Sandra, thank you for your comment. I'm much better and more efficient with my shuttles so I'm afraid, I don't plan to do needle tatting videos at the moment.
Joele, you may not remember me. I was interested in getting a shuttle from you. I also would like to know if you would do a video on tatting with beads (beanile lace). I need some instruction on that and there isn't much on RU-vid that I can follow. There is one lady, but her nails are so long, it makes it hard to see what the heck she's doing. Hope you are well. A bientot.
Hi Doree, yes, tatting with beads is a good idea. I'm going to have a bit less time to do things related to tatting in the coming months but I'll add your suggestion to my list. @@11Frivole Yes. The butterfly bookmark is more along the lines of what I'll be doing. I just ordered Nina Libin's two CDs on beanile & Knots and Beads. I'm also going to try some Diamant thread. Lisa Adams has som metallic thread that comes from Turkey that has a polyester coating which makes it extremely smooth. I'm also using some Kreinik Bela silk. Hello Tania, I answered your comment on my other video. I'm sorry if the cream thread is harder to see. I do try to vary colours of threads and background but I'm still learning how to make videos! :-) If you want to learn, please see my beginners' videos on my channel and in particular this one which shows how to make the stitch with a shuttle: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWdbxK-NuNY.html
Okay ... You say this can be done with one shuttle but you only show how to do it with two shuttles ... How is this supposed to work with one shuttle? Did I miss something?
Hi M.R.E., yes, you are right, I should have probably shown both ways of doing it! You do not "need" the second shuttle as the split ring can be made with a thread end instead of a second shuttle. I use two shuttles in this video also so that I can show how to hide ends using two shuttles one on top of the other. But you can do the whole thing with one shuttle only and hide ends by sewing them instead. There are no chains in this design which makes it a "one-shuttle design". I was just using the opportunity of this video to show other techniques at the same time. Perhaps I'll should re-make the video with just one shuttle?
@@11Frivole okay that makes more sense. I will admit when I've tried the split ring it either wouldn't close at all or it came completely undone. I love how this square looks but it fights me so much.

@@11Frivole i learned needle tatting years ago but I didn't like the results so I've become determined to shuttle tat. Split rings were stupid easy with a needle but I fight with them on a shuttle. I think the join is what's making it so awkward for me. I got a massive ball of crochet thread and a stubborn streak a mile wide ... I'll just keep watching videos and practicing 😊
@@11Frivole I finally got the ring to close! The unflipped stitches don't looks nice as the flipped stitches but that's probably my thread tension. Putting the long extra thread on a shuttle definitely made it easier compared to just using the loose thread.
on the settings of every video of youtube , settings u find on the screen , in the right low of the screen, u have the options of the speed . there u can choose the speed and u can choose a low speed. this way , it is not too fast. after the video, dont forget to turn to normal the speed from settings.
The very first one you'd complete. Then the next one you'd join it on two corners as you're tatting the last round. Does that answer your question? So you're joining as you tat. You don't make all the squares and join them together afterwards because then you'd have to sew them together. I join my granny squares as I crochet too. Is that what you meant?
