How far do you hang out your needle?
Do you prefer a shorter or longer needle depth setting?
In this video I share with you all a visual demonstration on the differences when using different needle hangs. I won't use any measurements or anything like that in this video but I will show you a visual demonstration and a real time demonstration of the differences on different needle hangs.
For me personally I prefer to hang my tattoo needle out quite a bit and for a couple of good reasons. I prefer to hang my needle out a bit further because I am able to see my needle tip much easier while keeping my tattoo site as clean as possible. When I hang my needle out further as demonstrated in this video my tattoo process tends to be more cleaner and I am able to sink 1 pass lines every time because of my needle tip visibility.
Needle hang will vary from artist to artist. I have seen some artist ride the tube, I have seen others have a moderate to mid setting, and I have seen others just hang that needle way out there. To each their own.
The point of this video is to shed some light on needle hang and to demonstrate the differences between different settings and what we can accomplish as well as why. This concept also applies to round liners and round shaders and results may vary from needle cartridge to needle cartridge. Please note for round mags the approach is a bit different following some key fundamentals.

It's better to go shalllow then too deep. Just keep praticing around your length and eventually you'll find the sweet spot. You can always fix those lines later but a blowout is forever.

Thanks for the video. I’ve read the other comments and I’m on the same page 😅I ask questions here and there but all I’m ever told is to go get an apprenticeship, which I am. Just now it’s rough money wise so I can’t. I just watch videos and draw mess around with stencils and occasionally tattoo on fake skin
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 9 месяцев назад
You’re welcome Savage! I appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment and I appreciate your support. Thank you. Getting an apprenticeship is a touchy subject within the tattoo industry. Some artist see it one way others see it another. I’m not against either or but that’s just my take. I can understand how hard it can be for others to progress and develop let alone get an apprenticeship.

One question, the needle deep for shading skin its the same as lining? I mean that 1mm to 2mm approx? Or shading goes deeper?
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 9 месяцев назад
That’s a great question! When it comes to shading it is nothing like lining and I don’t approach it the same way. With shading I build up layer after layer as opposed to lining I go straight in to deposit the ink as opposed to building up the layers. I do have various video where I share with you how I go about shading that are available on my RU-vid channel. If you head over the the video tab in my channel you can type in shading and locate loads of videos where I explain in depth about shading.

It’s because of the filming. If you’d see it live, it would stay still (no pulsating up and down), so yes it’s an illusion :)

Thank you for your continued support Poppy! I think it was the camera and maybe something to do with the frames per second, I can't be too certain. When I was tattooing the machine was running at a healthy pace. haha It wasn't pulsating but it really does look like it, I think it looks awesome.

@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 9 месяцев назад
Tattoos drying out is completely normal. It is apart of the healing process. I don’t like to keep my fresh tattoos dried for a long time but again it is apart of the healing process and it is normal. It really just depends on the tattoo itself and how it was applied.

Can anyone tell me how many turns from the start to get the needle right for outlines
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 3 месяца назад
I feel like this is a great question that brings up a great point. When it comes to turns to set the right needle depth can't be said by a number of turns. Every machine has different sizes and dimensions, every grip also varies in size. Needle depth preferences also vary from artist to artist so there wouldn't be a set number of turns to set the correct needle depth. We would have to use our eye and best judgement to find the needle depth setting that is right best for you as the artist. Also every artist will set their needle depth setting different so I feel like there would not be 1 answer to this question.

I think hanging the needle can be applied to any needle size and configuration. I feel it comes down to the goal at hand and what we are trying to accomplish and get out of our tattoos.

hi im still learning myself but i 2 hang my needle quite alot as its easier 2 see. how i seem to work it is i hang around 4mm. and use half that length in the skin 1.8 2mm give or take is this a good method 🤔

It’s hard to say if the method is good or not until the method is being demonstrated or used. If you’re getting needle snag if May not be the needle hanging but more so the stretch we have on the skin, it could be the way the needle is angled into the skin, it could be a curved surface , or the way we are positioned. It’s super hard to say. I’ve experienced snagging needles as well and I will tend to adjust my posture, position and reroute the direction I was tattooing in.

But are u us a shader or a liner it makes a difference
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 2 года назад
For me in this video I am using a 14RS. The principals of needle hang would apply to RL, RS, and for some maybe even RM. For example one person may prefer to hang their mags out a bit more over this person because of their personal approach and technical abilities. Another person may like to hang RL out further over RS. I like to find the setting that I like and find the setting per configuration that best aligns with my comfortability for that needle.
@ZimAndNexus

Why is your needle going in and out lol mine doesnt do that?
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 3 месяца назад
When a needle cycles it is supposed to move up and down. If it is not there could be something wrong with the cartridge or the grip of the machine. It is very hard to say as every setup will vary on technical difficulties.

I have a question I’m not sure if it common but when I start tattooing or in the middle off tattooing the ink does not want to come out I’m using a Cheyenne cartridges plz help
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 9 месяцев назад
Ahhh that’s a good one! I’ve also experienced this along my way and sometimes still have this issue. If we are experiencing the same issue it’ll be because the needle is hanging out too far. When the needle is hanging out too far it doesn’t retract enough into the tube to release more ink. The needle only goes in a certain amount and when it comes out it never touched ink with the tube so we don’t get any ink flow. Try to take your needle depth down a few notches and see if that works.
