1. Don't bring your kids 2. Don't bring too many friends - they tend to over crowd the small space 3. Shower and wear deodorant 4. Try not to move around while you're in the tattoo artist's chair 5. Don't be over affectionate with your partner - making out, etc.. It's awkward, weird and it's not the time and place 6. Keep your moaning in pain to a BARE minimum 7. Don't come in sick 8. Don't micromanage the process of the tattoo artists - no nit picking - and don't make more than 3 last minute changes 9. Don't be late to your appointment - if your running late always call - any later than 15 min is unacceptable 10. Don't ask for a discount during your tattoo or after your tattoo is finished - that is what your consultation is for 11. Don't ask for an entire tattoo change at your session / placement / design / size 12. Don't show up hungover, drunk or under the influence - it inhibits your ability to make good decisions - excess bleeding 13. Wear clothes that are clean and accessible - unclean clothing can cause your tattoo to get infected 14. Don't arrive to your appointment sunburned - sun damaged skin does not tattoo well 15. Don't hit on your tattoo artist 🤘

Oh and maybe not pre shave the area. My artists don't like their clients to shave the area due to damage or prickly. They just say they got it, just leave it be not to put that area under any extra stress beforehand specifically if you don't normally shave it.

I feel SOOO terrible because I broke 8 (kind of) and 11. A little background, I looked up one of the best shops in Houston and found the place I wanted. I submitted my inquiry to the shop owner and he assigned me my artist. The catch is that this is an authentic asian parlor and a lot of the artists do not speak english fluently. So I describe my idea to the artist, but shop policy was she cannot show me until I'm in the store. I get there and what she'd come up with was cool but just not what I had in mind for my calf (and first tattoo). I politely explained it wasn't what I had in mind, and we came up with a new concept on the spot as I already had a few ideas in mind, I just needed a professional opinion on making it a good tattoo. I drew on her pad to give the idea and she came back in about 30 mins with a render, then another 15 with the stencil once we tweaked it a bit. Keep in mind I'm trying to explain all of this through google translate, english to mandarin. I felt so terrible because this was my first interaction with her, turned down her art, then came up with a new concept. I know I can be picky, but especially with something like this. She killed the tattoo though! That was number 8 Number 11, same tattoo artist. I wanted Shenron from DBZ on my shin and the antlers to go on each side of my knee. I explained my idea was a DBZ leg sleeve. The picture I provided was a straight up and down vertical pic. The tibia is not vertically shaped lol. So the poor girl aligns the antlers with the center of my knee, but the face is waaay of to the left on my shin right below the knee. So again I politely try to explain I want the face centered right below the knee, which isn't exactly "straight" down in a line from the top of the knee, nor to the bottom of the tibia. We had placed the stencil 2x at this point. So she place it one last time, this time it was too far to the right.... When i bent my knee he looked like he was off to the right. At this point I'm sweating, I feel so bad about putting this poor girl through the ringer. We wipe off that stencil, I mark the center of my shin with a sharpie, and she ended up cutting the stencil into 3 sections. One for the upper portion without the antlers to align the face, the bottom section to align the 3 middle dragonballs in a line down down my shin, then sketched on antlers to make it align to my knee, then placed stencil. I brought snacks, water, for myself and my artist, and mooncakes for all of the artists on the second visit because I felt bad about the first one. After the second session I felt so bad, and gave her an extra $50 on top of the tip. Is this acceptable? I feel terrible but at the end of the day I can't have a dragon on my shin that's looking the wrong way lol. This has been on my mind since the first session, and she's very hard to read because we can barely communicate so I'm not sure how to interpret anything lol. The second appointment was 8/16/24 for reference.

Though I agree with your statements what about if it's the other way around... things that tattoo artists do that annoy the clients??? Tattoo artists being late, tattoo artists being hungover, not having any design done, not answering back to emails?? It's funny how tattoo artists are always blasting the clients but the reality is, is that sometimes it's the other way around... I have many tattoos by really great "professional" artists and last year I started a sleeve with a new artist who is quite known and was referred to me, I really loved his style but if I would have known how "unprofessional" he really was I would have went elsewhere, there was not one session where he was on time and if he was, drawing not done, he hadn't eaten yet, he was hungover, I live an hour away from the shop and he canceled me last minute several times, asked me if I could come later when I had already left my house, it's very frustrating and I feel that this needs to be discussed as well... My time is precious too and when my appointment is at 1pm and we only start at 3pm because my artist doesn't give a shit if he goes to bed at 4am and wakes up at 12:30pm that is not okay ! More of this needs to be discussed, as a client I'm super respectful but this behaviour is not acceptable, just because you have thousands of followers on instagram doesn't give artists the right to do what they want

Sara Strange I understand, and what you’re saying rings true. I have indeed worked in studios where the artists were like this, and I have also experienced this as a client myself. This was actually the main reason that I opened my own studio; to have a studio that offers a professional and consistent service. My artists are always on time and never hungover or under the influence. In some cases completion of the design depends a lot on the client and some designs need to be done with the client present. Unfortunately there is a LOT of ego in the tattoo industry, where some artists covet the lifestyle more than they actually appreciate providing art for their clients. The only way that you can know the artist etiquette is by word of mouth. Luckily for me, I have a studio full of respectable artists, and almost all of the artists who have done my work have been stellar workers. My channel is aimed towards clients though, and people WANT to know what the faux pas are so they can avoid them.

@@hayleetattooer Thank you so much for your response I totally agree, it's hard knowing how the connection will be between artist and client I have always been so pleased with the artists I have booked, for a one shot session it's not the end of the world, but for a sleeve where it's been a full year of being treated like it's no big deal was very frustrating 😟 The artist luckily is very talented I am very happy with my sleeve, and don't get me wrong he is a nice guy, however being late everytime, hungover, cancelling, all the excuses is not tolerable I couldn't wait for my arm to be done just so I wouldn't have to deal with this anymore

I had a similar situation where he didnt even make a drawing and when I showed up to the parlor, he literally told me ‘oh I cant do what you asked’ so I was like uh okay but I made the deposit and everything so i waited there with him getting NEW ideas for a totally NEW design because it got super awkward and I didn’t want to lose my deposit for nothing. Also towards the end of the first session, he was rushing to go eat so I had blowouts. I complained and all but its just not nice, as much as I understand how artists get pissed off with clients, some apprentice artists or pro’s also make it VERY uncomfortable for the client due to the lack of transparency whether with price or design or being punctual. In the end, it ended up being a lovely piece but is it my favorite? Not really, I dont regret getting it, but I wish I had spoken up more

Love this. Was prepared to get annoyed like I often do with these vids, because the tattoo artist whines and complains about their clients, many times for unfair reasons. Annoyed because the client don’t know the etiquette, or they have honest questions. Like, “it’s rude to ask how much a tattoo costs.” Seriously? Is it rude to ask how much your new car, or your dinner is going to cost? Tattoos can run anywhere from $75-$3000 (or more). That’s a huge difference, and someone unfamiliar with how long their tattoo idea will take needs to know they can afford it before it starts. But your not-to-do list is basically, just show some respect for your artist, their work, and their time. And they should do the same back, respecting the clients, their time, and really listening to what they want.

I just got my first tattoo. We communicated through email. Due to size and where I originally wanted the tattoo, my artist left out an important part of what u wanted. I walked into my appointment, and we talked it out he was able to add back in the part I wanted. We moved the placement to my arm. Being seeking to talk it out made for a great experience for me. 2 questions: If the artist (naturally) asks “gimme some ideas of what you want” Where’s the balance of giving due freedom to work their craft but also me asking for what I want? I know 70% of what I want but that includes needing the artist to fill in the blanks/make it better 100% than my “amateur-artist” vision. I don’t want to hinder the artist. ☀️ How much is too much? Assuming “ghost-like” is ideal and sunburned is bad… how about recently tanned??

More times than most they have a vision and when they ask if that work's it's better than my original idea anyway put trust in them, do you're research on where or who your going to it's okay to change aspects but don't be knit picking the smallest details a lot of artist do the best work when you give them free-range of their creativity🙂

What about email etiquette when it's a really popular studio with a distinct style, so they sometimes deny appointments based on scheduling or just stylistic difference? Like, should I email them just to say I'm interested in a consultation and wait for a response, or should I include all the basic info about my idea - subject, size, placement, etc. along in the first email I send them?
@hayleetattooer
@hayleetattooer 5 лет назад
casket rat Thanks for the question! Definitely include all of the subject matter in the initial email, because if the studio/artists dedicate themselves to a particular style it would be likely they will ask you for this information prior to booking a consultation anyway - so including it will save time. If they do decline your request for design or scheduling, try asking if they can refer you to an artist that suits the style more closely :)

As a tattoo artist, would you talk over a design with a client months in advance without an appointment? I plan on getting a tattoo, possibly by the end of the year but am not sure exactly when since I have to save up for it and travel expenses. I would also like to see what the artist can come up with before I decide that I definitely want to book with them. I know as an artist, one wouldn't want spend time on a design, only not to book it, but I wouldn't want to book(conmit to) a date when I haven't seen a design, especially since I would have to fly out to a different state. Any advice?
@hayleetattooer
@hayleetattooer Год назад
Great question - me personally as an artist I strictly do not provide designs prior to an appointment and I believe I did a video on the reasons behind that. But if you are seeking a particular artist out of state, the best thing you can do is email the artist with your idea, and if they like the idea and are happy to take on the project, ask if (because you are travelling) they might be willing to provide the design prior to the appointment for a deposit or extra fee? If they say no; you would either have to trust that you chose a great artist and that you will be happy with whatever they come up with… or keep searching for an artist that will provide a design prior for a fee. I don’t believe any artists would provide a design with no booking or deposit though.

I've had a tattoo artist show up late for my appointment and I just left...so it goes both ways. Respect my time too. You pay A LOT of money to get tattooed. And I've had a tattoo fade out quicker than others done by the same artist...is it bad to ask for a touch-up at a discount?

When is an appropriate time to ask the tattoo artist how much the tattoo will cost and if you've already had a consultation, could you push the appointment date to be quite a bit later to save up for it if it's not the price you expected?
@teeshac8421
@teeshac8421 5 лет назад
My artist told me the price before I even placed my deposit, and artists tend to have a policy where you can change dates 24/48 hours before the appoint or else they take your deposit. I'd say just ask at the consultation, as an artist wouldn't judge you for having a budget as long as it isn't too low!

My Tattoo artist charges a set price per hour. What usually happens for me is, i go in and have a chat with him giving him my ideas, the placement, size, general design etc. Then after that he tells me how many hours it will take MAX. Then i usually book in straight away as i save up roughly about £300-£400. You are usually expected to pay a deposit too before booking in. And as someone else has said, most places usually allow for a 24 hour cancellation window

What about bringing your kid before hand to show him what a tattoo station is, but have them leave the shop before the tattooing begins?
@hayleetattooer
@hayleetattooer 10 месяцев назад
I would suggest against it at all (unless you have organised and okayed it with your artist prior). There are usually multiple artists working in a shop and the slightest accidental bump, or sometimes even motions or sounds can distract the artists focus. Another reason is that if the child were to slip and hurt themselves in the studio, the public liability insurance would likely not cover the studio as the space is not insured for minors. Also, even the nicest tattoo studios are likely to have low-brow art on display which is absolutely not kid-friendly!

Can anyone help me out here? I have a friend (we're not close at all) who drew up a tattoo idea for my dad. My dad got him to draw up a different tattoo & put it on his pec & around his nipple. So my dad never got this specific tattoo; exchanging it for the tat on his pec. I have SH scars & I have been using body markers/ temporary tattoo markers to cover them up for a while until I convinced my mother to let me use Jagua (I'm an adult but I'm still in school & living at home). Jagua is sort of like the south american version of henna. I brought it to my dad's house & asked him to do the jagua for me. Dad printed out the dragon that our friend drew & painted it on with the jagua. I liked the dragon. We have another friend who is inked to the max, so I showed it off to him. (He also used to SH so I was really excited to be able to show him the jagua cover-up.) He suggested that I make it bigger by 10%. So next time I went to my dads, I got him to print out the art again. Ofc we didn't have any more tracing paper & he didn't want to do it for me so I ended up doing it myself. I fell in love. I already liked the dragon, but seeing it this way just felt perfect. It has lost some of its glamour at this point (after months of this art) but I still like it, & I want to get it tattooed permanently. The artist who drew up the art is really slow & he works a ways away in a not-so-great neighbourhood. My dad recommended not seeing him for getting a tattoo. Is it rude to decline his work but keep his art? Is it rude to ask another artist to tattoo smth they didn't create? How do I go about asking a different artist to do it? How do I ask my friend if I can use his art? Thanks!

When I've gotten all 9 of my tattoos, I show my artist the design I want and tell them they can change it up if the design wouldn't look good the way it is and so it will fit my body better. The show me the stencil of the design they made up and then they will give me a price for it without me asking the price. If the price is good for me he will do the tattoo. My artist isn't bothered by me talking during the tattoo. He's actually very talkative like I am so we fit great and he does great tattoos. Its only rude to ask the price of a tattoo when you first walk in the door. Like throwing down a design and saying. "How much" without letting them really look at the design and seeing what would work best with what area of your body it would look good on. Some designs you want on your arm may not work on your arm. Some designs may have to end up being a little bigger than what you wanted because your artist is thinking about how its going to heal and how long your tattoo will last and will it look good years to come. Text is the #1 thing you should always listen to your artist about. If your artist says your text size needs to be bigger it should be bigger. The smaller the text size the more likely years down the road all the lettering with blur together and look a mess. This is just my personal opinion, but I think it is disrespectful to show an artist a design and ask them if they are capable of doing the design you want. To me its like your telling them they don't have any talent. I know some artists specialize in certain types of tattoos, but I just think its rude to walk into a shop, show an artist a design and then ask them if they are capable of the design you want.

If it's to a similar shaped place (like from one side of the back to the other, or from ribs to shoulder-blade) is can sometimes work, but if it's to somewhere different it won't work as well. The artist may need to rework some shapes & angles.

It's perfectly fine unless it's in an awkward position. If you need to twist to look at it, you could mess up your positioning a bit. If you look occasionally when they are getting ink, it should be fine. As long as it's not every time.
