I'm so sorry for the great loss of your dad. His death left you and your sister a huge void in your heart. You made him very proud before he passed away. Your mom's life is not easy but she's doing what she can. Be patience with her, too.

If you really look into it, steps will never stand in place of your own biologicals. Listen to yourself, you don’t full love the step father either. All lives have beginnings and endings. All earthly things have expiration date. Some may be early and some later. You just have to be thankful that your father’s didn’t expire when you were kids and have suffer. You and your sis are grown adults, no need to complaining.
Same thing if your mom passed and your dad remarried. It probably be worst than this. BTW, you guys should not have kept your dad's illness as a secret. Your sister was not a 5 year old girl. She's a grown woman. She should know everything so she can spend time with your father before he passed. What good is it to gain everything but lose that one chance to spend with him. It is true like what someone had replied here..it is easy to say. But it is also possible to do. I divorced in 1994 and took my son daughter with me. Refused to split up my children. I told myself, these rules are not for me. They are set up to keep me down. I am in America now, my abilities as a mother is only limited to my will. I remarried 3 years later. I discussed with my soon to be husband about how I grew up with a step-father and how I did not want that for my children. I feel that as a mother or just as a person in any relationship; if you set the precedent, others will know what your expectations of them are. People will only do what you allow them to do or treat you the way you allow then to treat you.
