Thank you, Mr. Hickok45, for your continued service as an educator, be it on campus or on the range. I grew up on single actions because that's what my dad had, and I appreciate your covering this one. Thanks for the reminder about loading five!

A man is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock at the front door. He opens it to find two sheriff’s deputies there. He asks if there is a problem. One of the deputies asks if he is married. The man replies, “Yes, I am.” The deputy then asks if he could see a picture of the man’s wife. The guy says, “Sure…” and gets a photo to show them. The deputy says, “I’m sorry, sir. But it looks like your wife’s been hit by a truck.” The guy replies, “I know, but she has a great personality and is an excellent cook.”

I have a Great Western Arms single action pistol that has no safety or transfer bar to carry it with six chambered. When I got it handed down to me it was altered to fire by fanning for quick draw exhibition shooting. When cocked it only had three clicks and had a very light trigger. A pistol smith from Yorktown Texas replaced the parts the trigger needed to have four clicks and could no longer be "fanned". It's a 22 long rifle pistol but the same size of the large calibers made the original owner was in a quick draw club in California for all I know he may have just shot blanks I seldom ever shoot it I still have the holster and misplaced the belt that came with it. Taurus makes a pretty good pistol I have a Tracker in 22 Magnum nine shot I carry a lot also had a Beretta .40 caliber look alike that shot good but I traded it for the real thing a Beretta 96 FS Inox. That finish looks like black chrome kind of like CZ does on some of their shotguns.

The only Taurus product I've ever owned was a M-85 2" snubbie in .38 Spl many years ago. I found it to be of very good quality, nice trigger in both SA/DA and a decent finish. I do regret trading it off. As to the plastic grips on the Deputy, I purchased a third gen Colt SAA that came with plastic grips and I paid a lot more than $500 for it. Grips are cheap and easy to swap out.

Single action revolver were always discount priced for 40-50 years until about 10-15 years ago, the companies decided to sell them at premium prices. I remember getting a ruger blackhawk 30 years ago for S280 new...the ruger p89 which was a discount pistol was on the counter for the same price. They're not hand fitted. They used to be rifle accurate and i have yet to find a new one that is even half as accurate as the old ones, yet they cost over 2x what they used to...and people keep buying them...🙄

@curly__3
@curly__3 Месяц назад
@@bmphil3400 wrong. That isn't how it works. Tell me why ruger still sells discount firearms for S280. These new firearms are far more complex than single action revolvers. @bmphil3400
@bmphil3400 Месяц назад
@@curly__3 almost all revolvers are expensive compared to polymer automatics. I imagine some of it is demand. Demand can work for you or against you. Look at Glock 22s now. .40 has been abandoned by the police so used .40 glocks are $279 now. New 9mm glocks are between $499 and $599. Revolvers take many more machining processes to produce for lower capacity and higher weight. Material, finishes and heat treat are more difficult. As tooling has moved toward polymer autos, revolvers demand a premium because it's like a boutique item now.....

@curly__3
@curly__3 Месяц назад
@@bmphil3400 ... All of the ruger revolvers are cast steel. They cast them in house. They are not machined in the classic sense other than some finishing. Pull a single action revolver apart, they are one of the simplest guns made next to a single shot shotgun. They are extemely cheap to make. Taurus sells a dozen different double action revolvers for far cheaper than this single action. Double action revolvers are far, far more complex yet they sell 4 or 5 models that are good quality for well under S400 retail. I actually know what i'm talking about here... Boutique item? Is that why they make so many of them and aell so many of them? You do understand that the single action Ruger wrangler is ruger's best selling gun and that heritage rough rider single actions outsell all other handguns combined?

So basically they started making the gaucho model again? Anybody around in the early 2000’s knows taurus made this exact revolver they just called it the taurus “gaucho”. I had several and they were decent guns. I thought they were even better than uberti’s at the time. The gaucho was made in brazil and everyone just couldn’t have a single action “made in brazil” so they didn’t sell well. I see this says taurus mfg Georgia on the frame. The nickel gaucho’s were very nice and you could find them for $300-350 at shows on occasion.

Taurus has the WORST customer service in the business ! They bend over backwards not to honor their Lifetime guarantee. If they do manage to answer their phone, they are rude and unhelpful. I've had multiple experiences with them over the years. None good ! Taurus does make some decent firearms. But I always tell people -"If you buy a Taurus firearm, be prepared to fix it yourself if it needs repaired.". Against my better judgement, I picked up a new G2C a year ago. I quickly discovered it had a "short chamber". It would lock up like the slide was glued shut with 2/3rds of the ammo I chambered. I had to very forcefully hit the back of the grip while holding the slide to get it open- which was very un- nerving to say the least. I researched this issue and found it was a common issue with Taurus 9mm's. I called Taurus to see if I could get a different barrel, or get the chamber in my barrel repaired. They wouldn't admit their 9's had this issue. And refused to help me. They told me to fire 400 rounds of ammo that didn't lock the slide up- it just needed "broken in". I told the guy that there was no way I was going use up that much ammo to fix their gun ! At that time, it would have cost $160-$180 for 400 rounds of 9mm. Hell, I paid $180 for the gun. I shouldn't have to spend that much to fix it ! Anyway, the guy hung up on me. What a joke. So much for their "lifetime warranty".

I hope to someday get a good SAA revolver in my collection that is in 357 mag cal. The Taurus one might actually be one I could save up for if I can find any stores selling it. Very nice looking gun and the grips could be replaced with wooden ones. The only thing I don't like about it is the transfer bar, but it's not a deal breaker.

Is that a new to you Colt ? I don't think I have seen it before, at least not with those wood grips.

Like you hickock, I favor the Single Action Revolvers. There's just something about hearing those four clicks. I've had a couple of the Italian made Center fire and Black Powder revolvers but, my favorites are the Three Screw Rugers. I do have a Vaquero in .45 Colt though. Back in the day when you could find a good Colts Single Action fairly reasonable, my hard earned money went elsewhere 😢. Thanks for sharing this informative article with us today. FYI, I never tire of your whit/humor. Please, do not change.

Looks like a nice revolver for the money. That Colt next to it looks really great. Reminds me of pictures of Mike Venturino's SAAs. They mostly had pretty wood grips like that.

My main carry gun for the last 2 decades was a Taurus 85 (357/38, 5 shot, 3") and has been recently been replaced by a G2C (Taurus 9mm, 12rds) both have always worked perfectly, in spite of my neglect 😅

Really excited that these are out. Street price seems to be about $500 or so. I am torn though. With my old eyes it might be wiser to spend a couple bills more for the adjustable sight Blackhawk.

I would like to acquire a single action revolver, but these websites are just so inconvenient to use. I wish I could just look at one at a store and tell somebody what it is I'm looking for. The important thing to me is the accuracy to the original action; safety position on the hammer (first click,) no weird transfer bar, retractible firing pin, or otherwise, and preferably leaf springs throughout. From what I understand, Uberti changed their hammers and have been making their guns less like an original Colt. I wouldn't mind an old model Pietta, but all the ones on Gunbroker use the same picture, and I don't want to pay and order something without holding it first. And between the shipping and the FFL stuff, that's another hundred dollars on top of the six or seven hundred dollars. I picked out an 1899 Colt .38 double action at an antique store not too long ago, a genuine Colt firearm, for less money than one of those Italian single actions. A cowboy gun would be cool to have, but I really care about authenticity a whole lot more than functionality. My carbureted cars have carburetors, if they came with points, I keep them with points. I don't want a twelve volt system on my 1940 Ford, and I don't want any weird modern "improvements" on an 1873 pattern revolver. Maybe I'm technologically inept, but these sites are just really tricky.

I don't talk much about what firearms I do or do not own. However, I will say that once upon a time I had a Ruger Vaquero that I unfortunately had to sell. I have been wanting to buy a single-action revolver just for the fun factor, but the costs of those these days are much prohibitive. The Taurus Deputy may just be the right thing at the right time for me. And as for backed out screws, a drop of blue thread locker makes all the difference.

Uberti's totally lost my business. Got one of their SW clones only to have a cylinder gap SO large that it blast unburnt propellant back into my face. I called them and asked what the hell was going on and why their cylinder gap was 0.18" They said that their specs allow for UP TO A 0.18" gap on their revolvers Smith and wesson's specs call anything 0.12+ a failure/defect. Just throwing that out there as food-for-thought. (you don't _EVEN_ want to know what the endshake was on that thing..)

I didn't hear you specifically say how the Deputy felt in your hand. I notice that the Colt (especially with 4-3/4" barrel) felt handy. The Ruger Blackhawk 4-5/8" feels bigger and somewhat more clumsy. Even the Vaquero New Model doesn't have the handiness feel of the Colt. What would you say about the handiness of the Deputy compared with the Colt?
