A tabletop review of the notorious Taurus Judge in the Public Defender Poly variant. This is the most compact and lightweight format for the Judge, and even with its snub nose, it has its signature capability to fire .410 shotgun shells.

The absolute best rounds for this and the full size are the Lehigh Defense Maximum Expansion. There is a video on here showing why it is the best round.

I have this in OD Green. I like the FDE too. I have only shot 45LC cowboy loads so far. Just finally got PDX in stock so I'll try that next. I also plan to carry this when deer hunting. Can't count how many times I've been in my stand and had a squirrel chattering at me. Won't be going home empty handed if I don't get a deer.

Love the look of this particular revolver and I think it serves a purpose with defensive rounds, like you mentioned. Seriously contemplating purchasing this model, but some other reviewers were having cylinder jamming issues, but perhaps they were using inferior rounds? Any issues to report regarding cylinder sticking? Thanks!

The only time I've had jams in Judges were with some birdshot and buckshot .410's not designed for handguns; ironically, though, this Public Defender Poly had less of those problems compared to the Judge Magnum I have.

@@MannixKnivesOk, good to know. I’m noticing the pistol rounds (.45 colt and 410) are expensive and hard to come by, so I’m a little on the fence, but it sure looks like a fun gun to shoot. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

5956...I use #6 in my public defender for the reason you stated. Also, at 3am my vision isn't so great...ya can't miss with birdshot. Finally, no over penetration. Rounds 4 and 5 are .45 LC

Please stop spreading the myth that you don't need to aim with a shotgun. With a typical 18.5" barreled shotgun, you definitely need to aim unless you are using a rifled choke or a rifled barrel that creates a donut pattern of shot. At home defense distances, typical 00 buckshot will generally make a fist size pattern which is just a few inches. So it's quite easy to miss. The only exception other than the ones I mentioned is if you use something like Aguila buckshot minishells. Those give about a 6 to 7" spread at 7 yards. That being said, you are halfway correct in that the Judge does have a fairly wide spread when using buckshot. However there is a lot of difference in spread between Federal "handgun" 000 buckshot, or Hornady Triple Threat compared to regular .410 000 buckshot shells. I tried some Remington 000 buckshot and the spread was 12" at 10 yards. However Hornady Triple Threat spread was only about 5" at 10 yards from my Judge. So depending on what ammo you use you may or may not have to aim especially if your target is only presenting a side profile instead of an ideal full frontal torso shot. That being said, buckshot definitely increases hit probability. It just is really frustrating that Federal is not increasing production of it's .410 handgun 000 buckshot. It doesn't make much sense given how much demand there is for that ammo.
