Ok so in this video I give out everything I have learned about fishing for Tautog, or Blackfish they are sometimes called. I included fish behavior, tackle, rigs, bait, techniques, and anything else I could think of. Its a pretty long video but I feel it is full of great information. This is the first of many tutorials I plan to put out this year. Hope this helps all of you out in at least some way.

My first thought was that I didn't want to watch a 14 minute clip, but I'm glad I did. This was very informative, easy listening and everything this guy says and shows makes sense. I haven't bottom fished for many years, I'm semi retired and want to fish and run my boat every chance I get. I'll have a second rod & reel rigged for blacks in a couple days and can't wait to get out from Halloween YC Stamford, hoping to catch dinner.

I use same 3 oz sinkers. My uncle , god rest his soul, would bring us buckets of lead. He had formed and was same sinker. Perfect for bottom fish rig. I use eagle claw black fish hooks

As great as watching you catch fishes, I love your tutorials. I got so much to learn. For now, this newbie will have to stick to fresh water and maybe one day hit that open water. A big thanks to you and your family as I'm sure it takes a lot of time to make vids like these 👍

Great video. Very slow and nicely explained. I recently moved to VA and started fishing the Chesapeake bay and watched a very good taug season this year but never knew how to fish for them. Now that you explained it so well, I just need to find the spots.
@SouthernReelsFishing
@SouthernReelsFishing 5 лет назад
Thanks! The Tog bite is still really good. As far as the spots just drive along close to the bridge and use your sonar, when you see any structure stop and fish it. It doesn't take much to hold them.

Perfect timing Jessie decided tonight that me and my father are going Saturday to try for them for the first time. We didn’t know much about them so this helped. Heading out of Lynhaven. Do you know of oceans east sells the bottom sweepers? Thanks for what you do man love the content. Hope you continue to be successful
@SouthernReelsFishing
@SouthernReelsFishing 5 лет назад
Good luck man! Don't think they carry bottom sweepers yet, they have been hesitant getting them for some reason. But they have some other jigs that should work. Just try to keep the hook size smaller in a 3 ounce jig. If nothing else just do the bottom rig setups I showed. They work just as good, it's what my friend Jim uses and he normally catches more fish than I do lol. Of course he is asian lmao

For the high lows try circle hooks, with the angle they eat the crab at i noticed I’ve had a higher hook up ratio
@edglover3805
@edglover3805 Год назад
Do you ever use breakaway line for the sinker which gets caught up the most it seems from my own experiences. I use 10 lb test on 30 lbs test leader for sinker only and rarely loose my hooks on a snag

Gamagatsu octopus hooks are really good. Sharpest of the brands. The shank of the hook is very ridged, haven’t had any problems with the ones I’ve made. Check’em out.

I love that you're making your own sweeper jigs I was thinking about doing something similar have you worked out what the price comes to per jig head? Is it really worth it just wondering because here in the Tidewater area as you know there are a lot of snags and sometimes I can end up spending a large amount of money to just lose a lot of Jigs and catch no a fish
@SouthernReelsFishing
@SouthernReelsFishing 5 лет назад
Definitely worth it, for a 3 ounce jig it cost roughly 70 cents each to pour your own.
