All of these comments are so ridiculous. This is a sophomore in high school who is creating and engaging in intellectual thought and created content and this lecture, which I'm sure none of the commenters below could do. This is the platform that is used to help spread her ideas. And they may not be as relevant to those of us who are not teens anymore but it's inspiring to see a young passionate person actively engaging in issues such as feminism and the effects pop culture has on gender stereotypes. She's working hard to fuel the progression our country desperately needs 👏🏼
+SergeofBIBEK You disabled replies so I have to respond this way. The reason it's called 'feminism' and not 'humanism' is because it takes a different approach than just simply "everybody deserves the same rights". Sure, they believe that, but they approach it from the angle believing that females in particular have a much greater disadvantage than males, and thus focus on that aspect the most.
Boys are not doing very well in today's society. Look at the statistics that show 60% of college graduates are now female. 80% of teens on ADHD medication are male. Most special ed students are male, most dropouts are male. Male adolescents die from suicide at 5 times the rate of females. And on an on. As a high school college counselor on the 1980s and 1990s, I sent girls to countless programs and seminars encouraging girls to attend college, and it obviously worked. Now that the tables have turned, where are the programs for boys?
me: *sees Lena Dunham's name on the screen* me: haha, cool *shoves breadsticks down my purse* me: I have to leave right now. But it was a great 2 minute ted talk!
+Aaanisa! Just thought I should mention, the video is from May 2012, which was before all the ugly truth about Lena Dunham came out. So, no one knew how awful she really was yet.
@SergeofBIBEK "Why be a Feminist? Why not just be a human-ist? Or if you like animals too... a mammal-ist? Or... a life-ist? Why just focus on female? Let's be understanding of everyone and everything." Saying your a feminist, doesn't mean that's all you are. That was part of the point of this talk. You can be a feminist AND a humanist AND a mammalist, but being a mammalist doesn't pertain to the point of this talk.
She is basically telling you to be yourself and to not be afraid of making mistakes because as a teenager (specifically a female) it's inevitable and you are always growing and we need a society to support young people to be themselves and not be afraid to do so. That's just what I got from it!

@SergeofBIBEK Well, females throughout history have been mistreated and underestimated. We go through a lot of insecurity and pressure, and on top of all that we are used for our bodies. We constantly have to worry about being, quite frankly, assaulted everyday as we walk down the street. We have to present ourselves to the world in order to please men, and if we don't, we're considered ugly, stupid, etc. Being a feminist means that you believe that females can be just as strong as men, and that we deserve to be equal to men, not that we are better.
I have considered myself a feminist for as long as i can possibly remember. I went to my first Women's rights rally at age 8, and wore a patch that said "FEMINIST" for years thereafter. What makes it said that children and teens like us knew from a young age that we believe women are strong, and deserve equal rights to men?
