In 2023 I headed to the River Tay to Interview a few very experienced Tay Ghillies. In the Tay Gillies Interview. It was both great fun end enlightening to hear Tony Black, Sandy McIntosh and Robert Grant Kelly talking about their experiences over a long period of time. I ask the guys about their view on Catch and Release, Spinning, Fly Fishing only, predation and more. We talk about the change in salmon Run times over the years, making comparisons to the Spey and other Scottish rivers. The Tay Gillies Interview will open the mind of many people and educate a great many more.

Absolutely fantastic piece of film. Sandy is a lovely man indeed. His manner and wit / stories surpass any day ticket I’ve ever paid for. I recall Grayling fishing in November at Kinkell. He showed us large cockfish circling newly cut redds on the gravel bar. Truly an enjoyable watch. Keep them coming. Hope springs eternally for the salmon, and the anglers too.

I couldn't agree more about Sandy. What a fantastic guy and Character. Great humour, wit, and a wealth of Knowledge. The fact that all those guys were by passed by "so called". river managers in the early days reflects on why we now have a problem. Very sad indeed.

Another enjoyable listen that I thought was about 20 mins long but in fact was nearly an hour. I could listen to these guys for hours even though I think my days of Salmon fishing are over. I think the Western Isles ruined it for me when you had a fair chance of a fish most casts as opposed to little chance every cast these days. The points on predation are on point. When you think of all the studies on mortality at sea and it is freshwater mortality staring at us face on, seals, dolphins, goosander & cormorant.

I'm glad you enjoyed John. More to come. My feeling is that the balance between predator and prey, which helped by man was once on the side of salmon, is now firmly against him. Add to this all the natural things and there can only be a low biomass of salmon at this time. They will bounce back again but not in our lifetime I'm afraid.

I've absolutely loved watching this video Ian. Yes it's very easy to get down in the dumps regards the numbers of fish, but listening to the wealth of knowledge and expertise guy's like yourself and the other ghillies have on the subject, then at least that knowledge can be used when our politicians decide to take the finger out of their nether region.

Heartbreaking to see the demise of our great gift of salmon . My great old friend mentor Norrie fraser used to say son enjoy it . They will not be here forever man will destroy it greed and money will win . I have caught many on fly .spinning . Catch and release was practiced in my young days don’t think it makes that much difference. I still have the occasional day on the Thurso and wick . Old age disnea wait for no man sadly .

A massive loss for Scotland and nobody is interested in doing anything about the decline, all the fishery board did was first deny the problem and then lately pass the buck for the cause of the decline
