"In my defense, I have none, for digging up the grave another time" is a really beautiful way of saying she couldn't help but think about the what-ifs, and it even sounds apologetic somehow. It's a very poetic manifestation of her maturity as a songwriter.

This entire album makes me miss people I've never met and feel homesick for places I've never been.

This song is the complete epitome of acceptance and moving on but will forever be having that agony for not ending up with someone you knew could have been 'the one'. If only you two share the same feelings, and if only the universe and destiny transpired you two to be together, it could've been something beautiful. But it didn't. 🙂 And you'll end up with no choice but to let go.

Notice how the background of the lyric video is a pool/fountain with lots of pennies in it? Every pennie was thrown with a wish behind it. And the lyric „roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool. And of my wishes came true, it would‘ve been you“. She really wished that this one person would‘ve been the 1 for her. So every pennie we see lying in the bottom are all of her wishes that this person would‘ve been the one. This song is literally poetry.

this isn't taylor being sad, this is taylor finally being herself. edit: taylor has always been herself, only now is she embracing everything about herself and using her imagination to write masterpieces such as these. :)

I am a recent fan and the depth of Ms. Swift’s poetic artistry is just stunning. The majority of people who only know her by Shake It Off are missing out on such an amazing artist. She so much deserves all her success. She bridges so many genres so effortlessly.

I recently broke up with my 4-yr-long relationship and this song tears me up everytime. I´m just amazed by how identified I feel with the lyrics. We had so much in common, we had a lot of plans together, we wanted to get married and suddenly that just disappeared. I´m glad she made me listen so many times to Taylor bc her songs have helped me through this process. Taylor swift is incredibly talented.

Why did I only just realise that the use of "pennies" was deliberate. Firstly, to correspond with "the 1" since pennies are worth 1 cent. And secondly, because pennies are worth 1 cent, they may seem to be worthless. But in the grand picture, tossing pennies and then having the wishes come true (aka getting the 1 person of your dreams) means an inexplicable, infinite value. I'm in awe.

According to me, this song is about a woman who is looking back on a relationship that ended. The woman seems to moved on from the pain of the loss, but still wonders how they could have come close to a lifetime together and parted ways. As she's speaking to her ex-lover, she wants to know if there's anything she could have done differently to keep them together. The first verse she tells her ex-lover that she's doing well and learning to live her life to the fullest (Been saying "yes" instead of "no") She thinks of him at times, and thought she saw him at the bus stop. "I hit the ground running each night" might mean that while she's enjoying her life, she does notice that she's not doing those things with him. She reflects on their relationship, and decides that just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean their love wasn't worth it. The pre-chorus she was surprised that they ended but now she has come to terms with it and used the painful experience to grow even more as a person (And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow) The chorus she remembers their time together and muses that they "were something" special (But we were something, don't you think so?). If the wishes she had made when they were together had come true, he would have been the one she spent her life with (And if my wishes came true It would have been you). It's unclear if she still wants that. She admits that it's her fault too(In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone). Whether she still wants to be with him or not, she thinks it would have been fun if he had been the one she settled down with, so their story together could go on for the rest of their lives. The second verse she hopes that he's enjoying his life and moving on too (I have this dream you're doing cool shit) She thinks that their relationship was worth it even though it ended, by deciding their love was one of the greatest of "all time"(You know the greatest love of all time are over now) In the bridge she finds it difficult to leave her questions unanswered. Still, she resists, the urge to ask if he thinks that they might still be together if things had happened only a little bit differently. In the 2nd chorus she admits that she has "no defense" for "digging up the grave" of their love to talk with him, but she keeps thinking about how close they seemingly came to staying together permanently. Sorry it's a bit long but I found this interesting and wanted to share my thoughts feel free to tell me what you think the song is about and if you want to add something. I got out of the relationship because I felt a lot of uncertainties and he never gave me reassurance.. but to this day.. i kinda hope he would come back. but then, I know I shouldn't wait for someone who's unsure about me.

I’ve seen multiple people say it’s weird to feel sad about a celebrity couple that doesn’t even know you, but when someone says something like “I hope I never loose you, hope it never ends, I’d never walk Cornelia street again.” or “Hold onto the memories, they will hold onto you, and I will hold on to you…”, it’s basic empathy to feel saddened for them…

folklore has always been an absolute masterpiece.

i love that she named this "the 1" when it's the perfect song for your ex. like a very sweet ode to exes. what a great love letter to a past love. it's not angry, mad or plain bitter. well, you can only write this when you've already met "the 1"

I have this on repeat for two days now. I've broken up a 6/7-ish relationship with a man I loved so so much. It was an okay relationship, it had its moments, but it became very evident that he didn't like me. I believe he might have grown to love me but he didn't like me, it's made me so passive, apathetic, and lifeless. He had plans in life but none for me, I was just a passenger. One day, I just woke up and decided that I didn't wanna be "not liked" anymore. It's been months since the break up, and I've went on dates a couple times now. Nothing compares to how I feel for him tho. He asked me to stay, but I know he will never like me so I still had to go. I don't know if I'll ever come across a relationship fit for me. But we were something, and if I could wish for someone, he would've been the one.

i really like the line “thought i saw you at the bus stop, i didn’t though” because its such an underlined way to tell that the person who she’s talking about in the song is so much in her mind that she kinda “searchs for” this person in random places, even if its unconsciously. its the same with the cardigan verse “chasing shadows in the grocery line”, but in the 1 i feel like its more disguised because of the different context of the song. anyway, i just love the subtlety

this really hits me……i met this really nice and sweet guy in 2021 and he loved me so much, he made sure i knew how much i meant to him. we live far from each other( literally the other side of the world) and he used to tell me that he’ll come to me one day and our long distance will be gone but cause i didn’t treat him right, i lost him and i’ve regretted everything i did to him. and though i have moved on, every once in a while when i’m alone, i think about what we would’ve been like if only i had treated him right and showed him the same love he showed me…..
