Larry from Iowa Requested a build with a particular brand and shaft in mind. Using Taylormade, KBS and PURE for the build we go through the pluses and minuses of the gear and the build.
Jim, it was wonderful to watch....I am the "Larry" who Jim built these clubs for me on 3/2/21. I had asked Jim to make a video of my build and it was awesome! I got the TM heads thru a fellow PGA member's Performance Studio. TM and one other manufacturer are only one's that will send out heads only, if requested. I asked a great deal from Jim with countless questions about the build and what I was looking for in a set. The parallel shafts allow for proper CPM management thus my fitter/builder couldn't do that since the heads needed to be bored! I watched a number of videos to find the person with the skill set to perform my "big ask" and Jim nailed it. This is the guy to go to for a build. Remember that "fitters" are not necessarily "Builders". Ask me any questions if you wish...Also a huge shoutout to his wife, Robin, who handled a lot of the information on my 1st phone call and then got them to me on time for my Myrtle Beach trip.
I just regripped my father in laws jpx e500 irons. Man you put those grips on with ease. I had an extra layer of tape and an unstable table vise but you make it look so easy
This video came at just the right time! I started watching your videos a couple of months ago because I wanted to swap the shafts on my p790’s. I’m 30, swing pretty hard and get good ball speed but have arthritis in my shoulder from a previous injury so I decided to switch to graphite shafts. I got fitted for the P770’s but decided to spend the difference in money for what the p770s would be compared to just buying the graphite shafts and bought shop equipment to do it myself since it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time and like the ability to alter my clubs when needed without waiting weeks to get the back. Plus I figured the shop equipment will last and get a lot more use over the years than a single set of irons. I decided to go with the Paterson Ballistic 95 graphite iron shafts which are also parallel tip so this video is just what I needed to see as you go through the build! Thanks and keep up the good content!
I never knew there was this much attention to detail in club building I thought you just epoxied the heads into the shaft cut the end to length and slapped a grip on.. I always like to try to do stuff myself like working on cars building things and stuff like that but after watching this video I think I'll pay a pro to install shafts into my clubs especially since I paid an arm and 2 legs for my p790s..
Thanks Jim, another great video. Great, great explanation. Was fitted for P770 last fall and now really understand what was going on in the fitting and the club being pured. I’m super excited for Spring to hit them and think about some of the things you pointed out on feel and swing weight. Thank you again
Jim, nice club building video! always enjoy your explanation for every decision you made. 1 qns thou, does cutting the shaft at the later part affects the frequency?
Awesome build Jim. I really love your explanations of what was asked for, the products being used, and the process that happens to get the clubs ready to hit. Question: Do Pure Grips have multiple sizes?
Great video as always! I’m 55 years old, 6’ 7” and have been fit at 1.50” long and 4* upright. I really want a set of P790’s. I have fought heavy swing weights my entire golfing life and usually end up in the E1-E5 range. I was thinking of dropping to 1.25” long in the 790’s. Do you think it would be possible to get to a D2-D3 swing-weight with midsize grip at that length? I play Stiff shafts and am open to a lighter shaft weight if needed.
Great video - very informative. I take it you do not subscribe to just blowing on the Pure grips as they advertise? Great idea for trying different grip styles, but I would add at least one layer of tape for the final build.
Question about reaming the hosels. On two “top quality” heads/sets (tip taper) I’ve reshafted that when I measured hosel depth it was very inconsistent - one head .1” too deep. Several other heads off various amounts. Do you ever attempt to normalize the bore depth? Any other methods you use?
Hi Jim, I ordered p790 4i and 5i with +.5” shafts and they came in at C9 swing weight. Do you know how this could happen? Nippon neo 950 shafts. Figured they’d come in around D4 which is what I like.
Jim ...Can a heavier shaft help to keep the ball on a straighter path? I play a 105g stiff. I hit a baby draw or big draw and sometimes a hook. I use to swing S300 stiff. Hit the ball straight but lost distance in the long irons. Thanks
I know a lot of TaylorMade p series irons use bullet weights in the hosel to obtain the right swing weight. Do the P790 irons use the bullet weights. Any idea on where to buy these weights?
What is the cut-off table you are using with the angle grinder? I bought a "chop saw" type holder for mine but I like the idea of having it fixed and pushing the shaft through.
Hi Jim regarding your tip weight laser for flo is it home made or bought, if home made can you do a video on how you made it please , only ask as in the UK they are out of stock , masters golf (golfsmith) are asking $103 for one . Cheers
Thanks, Jim, that was an interesting build. I have never come across that KBS graphite shaft or the Pure grips before. I have KBS Tour Graphites shafts in my Irons, do you know the difference between them, please?
the TGI shafts are more gear toward a the tour model steel where the max is profiled after the max steel. The tour is the flag ship and for the penetrating ball flight where the max is more for the higher flight
@@McGolf Many thanks Jim, I must admit that I love the TGI shaft that I have in my Irons. they are so smooth and easy to swing for a senior golfer yet produce a powerful ball flight👍
Jim, Nice build. I wonder about the KBS MAX Shaft. I assembled myself a set of Maltby TE's with the RECOIL 80 Iron shafts thinking that they could help me. I found with them that they had a really dead feel to them when striking the ball. Even tried lead tape to the back of the club to see it would help liven them up; it did not. I guess in a sense they felt a bit board-like and never gave me the performance I was expecting. Does the KBS MAX shaft give more of a snap through impact? Have you tried them? Thanks!
I have not tried them, However they follow the max steel profile which is to get a bit more snap into the ball. The recoil 80 or 90 were very boardy to begin with and that may have the issue
I was wanting to know if you tell me difference between the stock ping shaft, the 65 alta CB in senior flex and the UST recoil 460 ESX in F2. What would be the frequency of these shafts and which one would play softer/ better for 17-21 handicap. If I decide to get the mizuno 921 I was going to put the recoil ESX in the irons
I built up a set of P790's and was very underwhelmed. Consistency with the distance is a real problem as some of the shots really do come "hot" off the face. I sold them off to Golfworks and built a set of Maltby TS1's. No comparison. Dispersion and distance with these can be landed in a hula hoop.
The TS1s were a big surprise to them too, if they would have known about the popularity They would have in LH and then you know who is looking at them :)
