Brave is a bit of an understatement. Toaster sacrificed himself in what he knew would be a truly gruesome manner. The ultimate act of valor and unconditional love. A truly selfless act.
@@mckenzie.latham91 I would say that lampy sacrificed himself so that they could have power for the battery, without power they would have been forever trapped in the woods unable to save themselves or blanky
Maybe this should have been could "A Brave Appliances' Tale". Toaster-Junkyard, Kirby-waterfall, Radio-Scamp, Lampy-thunderstorm, Blanky-geek's shop. All were equally brave and sacrifice themselves in their own way. When you look at it, Toaster probably isn't that important. The leader of the gang, like Leonardo from "TMNT", and maybe the one who encourage them to find Rob, but he doesn't do much to outshine the others. Maybe my idea for a title is too much like "The Incredible Journey". Can anybody give a better title where all the five appliances all included and acknowledges their own individual brave/sacrificial efforts.
I love this movie. When I was little, I was terrified of my family's vacuum cleaner, so my dad painted a face on it and named it Kirby. I was never scared of the vacuum again.
Yeah, no. Rob almost freaking DIED and she acted like he got lost in the mall. Like, she wasn't even bothered by the fact that he was on the conveyor belt and so close to getting crushed to death.
@countessD84 She had no idea what happened, she only heard him screaming (and at the end of the scene he seems to be relieved that she didn't know he almost died). When she saw him just laying there on the stopped conveyor belt she probably thought he had staged a prank and was messing with her or something.
Well, that's not how I saw it. From her point of view she was freaking out worried about him and from her vantage point could not see where he even was (And made that clear). When she did finally see him, the crusher was not working and he was able to move towards her direction, so it seemed to me like she just thought he was not really in mortal danger, that he was overreacting or maybe just pulling her leg. I am sure that if she knew what was actually going on that she would have been practically crying and wrapped herself around him with a huge bearhug when she was able to get to him/him to her :)@@countessD84
No. He's not. See, the magnet likes order. He doesn't make excuses for his job - which is technically mass murder of broken technology. He's so used to it that even when his creator, a Man, demands reprieve, he does not comply. It shows what twisted things can happen when someone gets used to cruelty; it shows that you can become used to anything. That's the scary part; the more you succumb to habits, the more indifferent you become. And indifference may just be the most evil emotion of them all.
Even though it was crushing cars, it was still doing its job. When he knew Rob was their master, he stepped out of line. When he actually grabbed Rob with the appliances, that was outright murder.
If there was ONE thing I’d change, it would be the impact of Toaster’s sacrifice. It was a great moment, but then it immediately cuts to him being fixed and everything back to normal. I’d have liked to see a shot after the master was saved of the toaster just being crushed in the gears and all the other appliances shocked and mournful at his death. It could have been a scene like the one we got in the animated Robin Hood where he jumps off the tower and Little John and Skippy mourn him; the feeling of sadness in that scene is absolutely palpable, and considering the other scary or depressing stuff the Brave Little Toaster focuses on at other points in the movie, I can’t fathom why Toaster’s sacrifice was kind of just skipped over.
God, that shot of Rob screaming as he's about to be hit by the crusher really stuck with me. It really freaked me out as a kid, as did other scenes in this film. This was such an intense movie, both visually and emotionally. This movie is timeless. (If you get past the 80's references.) I dare you to find a recent animated flick that's this smart and meaningful.
One of the most underrated aspects of this film is its score, and a full half of what makes the scene of Rob ending up nearly getting crushed so intense, scary, and impactful is David Newman's fantastic composition. Even when listening to the music by itself, it gets your blood and adrenaline going because you can almost see the story playing out in the notes and instrumentation of the orchestra.
I've always pictured the following scene like this: Rob climbs down from the conveyor belt, and tells Krys what nearly happened up there, and that he initially thinks SHE turned off the machine. When she says she had nothing to do with it, he decides to find out what DID stop it, to which he sees the remains of the toaster. Climbing up, he sees that it was his toaster, and he removes it from the gears, at which point they gather up the other appliances and leave just before Ernie, or whoever IS in charge finds out what happened.
My question is, would he question the fact how his toaster got there in the first place? It had to climb up dozens of cars then take a MASSIVE leap of faith.
@@ZPokemonfanA Probably not, the place was filled to the brim, piles and piles of unsorted junk. Could legit have just been placed up there and gotten knocked down.
the only problem i can think of with this idea is that he went to college over 20 years before Andy did, but hey you never know, Disney could make it happen
I'm still creeped out by that magnet and I'm 28. I worked with the real deal and that thing isn't a lightweight. Drop that thing on a 55 gallon steel drum and it's flat. Think I heard it was over 5000 lbs.
Then someone fire the employee that performed the witchcraft that gave the magnet sentience. Or if it is automated, arrest the man that created its AI.
Well, I admit it was very rude of Chris to tell Rob to cool it and to come down from the conveyor belt because he's scaring her to death, but she clearly couldn't see he was nearly crushed to death, but she was freaking out when hearing Rob panic. Anyways, I imagine afterwards Rob told her what happened on the conveyor belt and she would've greatly apologized to him and felt terrible for him before they headed back to the apartment.
Chris sucks more than Lois Lane. I would drop Rob in a heart-beat if that's all she's said after nearly being so crushed to death, all by a insane, un-man-controlled magnet.
C00LKlDS technically she was still worried about him and when she says “cool it off” it can mean “knock it off” because she was getting frightened by his screams and having difficulties to find him specifically, so it wasn’t necessarily her fault, she was still worried about him but not having idea was he and what was way up there
Definitely one of the best films of the 80s. And almost certainly one of the most underrated films of the 80s. If Disney hadn't bought it for the Disney Channel before they had a chance of a theatrical run, this would definitely have gotten some pretty big name awards.
I never realized how good this movie was back when I was a kid. c': I watch it now, and it's a lot better than it was all those many years ago! It's quite underrated and heartwarming.
0:02 still scares the crap out of me, with his eyes disappearing. After all these years, that magnet is still scary as hell. The sound, the look,... Damn!
Yeah. He had a close call with death. Thankfully, he doesn't just die, he gets repaired. But how you fix a toaster that's been torn apart by gears, I have no idea.
Something tells me Toy Story 3 took a lot of inspiration from this movie, especially since Brave Little Toaster can be considered a prototype Pixar film.
A good few future Pixar employees actually worked on this. It was also based on a book, as well. "The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars" was a book also. Thomas M. Disch was the author's name. Of course, Disney edited/changed his "Mars" book to Jupiter, same way they did with Daniel P. Mannix's "The Fox and the Hound". "BLT to the Rescue" was a completely original Disney idea with no burrowing/input from Disch.
Ah....Now this...watching this again. This was worth the time and the perfect way to kick off the summer. I still love this film after all these years.
The way he makes a silly face at toaster at 2:04 shows just how connected to his childhood he still is. Kind of like how I am since I like to stay connected to my childhood too.
Yeah, just glad everything worked out for the appliances. This movie would probably definitely be the most emotion jerking movie ever if it was given a bitter sweet ending ex: They found the master, but left him alone as he moved on and never got to see him again.
except this was made in the 80s when cartoons still had morals and he had tons of drafting supplies in his apartment which means he was going to college for engineering or architecture. HA either one he won't have time for sex.
2:09 Timon: (pauses the movie) What was with the running? If you can call that running. Pumbaa: I was giving you time to catch up. Timon: Aww, you big lug. (hugs Pumbaa and resumes the movie)
I'm so glad Toaster survived. Otherwise this movie would be 50x more messed up than it is. This is one of the very few movies i'll never re-watch just because of how deeply it dives into my emotions in such a weird, almost creepy way.
I felt like watching this and looked it up on the off chance it had been uploaded. I couldn't remember much of it, so I was expecting a really cheesy, crappy old cartoon. So I'm really chuffed at how great it was! I just found out some guys from Pixar worked on it (I am a massive Pixar fan) and you can really tell in a lot of scenes, it pretty much feels like a 2D Pixar film. Apart from the cutesy characters this movie has a lot of grown-up themes. I love it, thanks for putting it up!
+C PT His girlfriend probably saw it get jammed in the gears and taking it shouldn't have been much of a problem since he could sue the owner of the dump for endangering his life
First Lampy sacrificed himself, then Kirby jumped in the river to save his 4 friends. But here, we finally see why the movie is called *the Brave Little Toaster.*
3:20 Timon: Well, that's it. The big wrap-up. The happy ending. The grand finale. Pumbaa: It's over already? Timon: Well, Pumbaa, that's the thing about endings. They come... at the end. Pumbaa: Oh, can we watch it again? Timon: Pumbaa, we just saw it. Maybe tomorrow. Ma: (walks up) Hey, what are you guys doing? (gasps) You didn't tell me you were watching the movie! I wanna watch, too! Timon: Ma, we just finished! The show's over! Ma: Well, you're just gonna have rewind it. (rewinds the movie) Timon: Ma! Ma: Uncle Max, we're gonna watch the movie! Timon: Oh, no! Uncle Max: (comes in with popcorn) Hey, I brought extra butter! Simba: Hey, you guys are watching the movie? Rafiki: (laughs) Any story worth telling is worth telling twice! (Mickey Mouse joins the group) Timon: What the... Snow White: Oh, excuse me. Dwarves: Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. Grumpy: Get outta the way! Timon: Who is this crowd? (even more Disney characters join them) Hey, down in front! Stitch: Yoo-hoo! (jumps on Goofy, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and Donald Duck) Aloha! (Donald angrily quacks at Stich) Peter Pan: Cock-a-doodle-doo! (the Lost Boys dogpile on him) Timon: Watch it! (gets stuck between Terk and Victor until Dumbo launches him in the air and lands next to Pumbaa) Okay, buddy. You win. Pumbaa: Sure you don't mind? Timon: Hakuna Matata. (grabs the remote and starts the film) Pumbaa: Timon, I still don't do so well in crowds.
Now THIS brings back my childhood memories...I remember staying at a hotel in Jamaica years and years ago as a small kid, and every time I rented a movie, it was this one. I never rented another movie because this one was so great.
Rescue 911, a 1989 - 1996 Discovery Health Channel show could’ve had an episode where what almost happened to Rob (The Master), with that junkyard crusher, happened at a junkyard.
Probably when the employees found out why their crusher jammed. They almost killed him, so he could legally threaten to sue them, unless they gave him his toaster back.
Yup, and I payd tribute to it with just finishing a project of mine where I took out the films audio and timed the entire flick to a bunch of songs and instrumentals to capture its essence, and personally myself I think it is a masterpiece. Problem is I know of nowhere where I can share it with others. Even if I could post a video here longer than 15min, it's not like youtube would advertise something like that, especially not with a bunch of songs being used...
Hahahah totally agree vvvvvv, I found it such a trip to re watch it!! Brings back good memorys as a kid and now it like ahhhhh sooo scary and amazing at the same time :) nothing beats those good old disney channel movies!
Out of this entire movie 1:04 this scene always scared me. Not the clown, or sone of the songs, but toaster bravely sacrificing itself to save his master. Lucky the next scene is him getting fixed but as a kid i cried so hard and got so scared.
Imagine if the movie went like this... Blankie flew off in the wind and never came back Lampy died of the lightning to the face Kirby sunk in the mud Radio died because of the guy who needed the radio tubes and Toaster died to save Rob... Imagine it like that!
When I was a little child I used to watch this movie every sunday on the TV (yes on one of the channels they repeated it every sunday. I havent seen it for so long! Now I finally did it again and I got so nostalgic over my childhood, a really awesome animation!
That has to be the scariest part of any movie I have ever seen as a child. I remember freaking out as the master was about to get his hand crushed. It made me feel claustrophobic. Ooooh, shiver shiver I feel kinda sick now. I think i've been traumatised.
I really love this! The Brave Little Toaster allways seem 2 remind me of Short Circuit 1 & 2 for some reason; I kinda forgotten it! ^^" Thanks so much for uploading this even though part 1 wasn't there! I had this on tape (recorded) along time but i lost it when i moved house! =( Thanks again! =D
The toaster was crushed under unbelievable force, yet this guy repaired him as good as new. That's fricking magic! This dude has a bright future in repairs and recycling! The girlfriend though... She definetly needs college if she can't recognize a life and death situation.
It's not that she couldn't recognize that he was in danger (she sounded frantic looking for him) it's that she couldn't see where he was. When she finds him sitting on a stopped conveyor belt at the end of the scene she probably figured he was pranking her before and pretending to be in danger (and he doesn't say anything to the contrary since he's probably glad she doesn't know he almost got killed).
I just noticed that I had a purple lamp just like Lampy. Man, I totally forgot about it until this movie. Dang it now I feel like I abandoned it like the one in the movie :(
OMG thank you for uploading this! i watched it when i was a little kid and I was thinking about it the other night and thought id made it up LOL but then I started watching this and it all came back to me :)
Wow. I really wanted to watch this again, since I hadn't seen it in quite a few years. It was a lot...darker than I remember from my childhood. Still an epic movie anyway. :3
1:06 you can see it in toaster's eyes...he knows what he has to do...and yet after he jumps hes still absolutely terrified of his decision...terrified, but still not regretting the sacrifice for his master... (im prob getting a little creepy myself here, please do not let my 6 AM i-stayed-up-all-night rantings creep you out)
all i know is that i can cry at this movie no matter how many times i watch it through out my life this movie has touched me this movie is the main reason why im so optimistic and never give up on anything i do
I was wondering if you know of anywhere where I can share a project that I have finished. That being replacing all the audio and timing the entire movie to different songs and instrumentals as a tribute to one of my fav movies (My fav being Patema Inverted). I think personally myself that I have created a masterpiece and would love to share it with others. RU-vid will not allow me to post videos longer than 15min and even if it did, it's not like it would advertise it to anyone. Believe me I have checked online for somewhere where I can post it for others to see with no luck.
Thanks so much for uploading this. I still get so sad for the blender :( Back when crazy stuff could make it into kid's movies, the creativity just brought about some great stories, songs, and drama.
Thanks for uploading this, I hadn't watched it since I was a kid, and only remembered about it because I saw the Toaster in a RU-vid Poop =P I have to agree with what people say about it being very dark, but still a great movie for kids and adults. I got alot more of the jokes that I didn't get as a kid, and you understand the meaning behind the songs such as "Worthless". Great movie. =)
1:09 Toaster think "MASTER! I COMMING TO SAVE YOU..." And smash on the gear, which meant that the evil machine who crushed all the scrap got the opposite just before it was squeezed on the boy's hand. Scary, huh?
Disney actually turned down this movie initially. It was a project John Lasseter and a bunch of Disney animators of the time were working on. It was going to be a groundbreaking combination of hand drawn backgrounds with fully CG characters, but Disney canned it, Lasseter was fired and went on to start Pixar, and the remaining animators worked on the film outside of Disney as a cheaper, independent work. After succeeding at Sundance, Disney bought the film and released it in limited screenings.
*Rob, the owner of the appliances, tried to get them, but the junkyard magnet took them. He had to hang onto Kirby’s handle.* Rob: Hey, wait a minute! These are mine! Let go! Lauren: Hang on up there, mister! *The junkyard magnet dropped them on the moving conveyor.* Lauren: (shocked) Oh, no! Toaster, we have to help our friends! But how? Toaster: I have an idea. Follow me. Lauren: Why? Toaster: Just do as I say! *We climbed to the top of the cars.* Rob: (scared) Chris, help! Help! Chris: (shouting for Rob) Where are you? Rob! Lauren: (looked at the gears turning) That’s it. If we jam the gears, the crusher will slow down. Toaster: Let me do it. He’s my master. Lauren: (worried) Toaster, no! You can’t do this! Toaster: (tearing up) Please try and understand, Lauren. It’s the only way to save our friends so please forgive me. Goodbye. (Jumped to the gears) Toaster: (shocked) Noooooo! Toaster! (Crying) My dear friend. You were so brave.
man. what an awesome film. truelly a masterpiece. always was, and always will be. i will watch it as long as i live. even way back when i first saw it.
I love this film too. I even worked on a project that I just finished, that being removing all the movies audio and timing the entire film to songs and instrumental, and personally myself I think tat it is a masterpiece. Problem is, I know of nowhere where I can share it with others and even of youtube allowed me to post videos longer than 15min I doubt very much that something with a bunch of music added would be advertised.
Notice how everything turns red for a while with all the tension and anxiety building up just before things return to normal after the Toaster sacrifices himself to save his friends and his owner.
