TBM 930 Start Up Sequence (From COLD and DARK Cockpit)

Recently I was able to take a ride upfront in a TBM 930 and film the experience. Starting up a turboprop is VERY fun as you can feel the raw power it generates, slowly spooling up into a monster of an engine. I've always loved cold and dark startup videos and so it was fun and rewarding to get to document the startup sequence of this awesome aircraft!

Hi there. An interesting video... However, a few points: As near as I can tell, the aircraft has the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-66D engine. There are a few things that are common to the PT6 series engines. 01:22 you state you're starting on Battery AND Main Generator. Your engine is equipped with a Starter/Generator -it functions solely as a Starter until the engine reaches self-sustaining Ng (around 48%) and the starter auto-disengages AND the Start switch is returned to the OFF position. Then (and only then) it functions as a Generator, supplying the aircraft power busses. At 2:50 you see 21 AMPS on your EIS... that does not indicate the health of your battery for engine-start. At that moment, all it is indicating to you is your battery DISCHARGE rate, with all your avionics on. You won't see your Start amperage UNTIL you're turning your engine. At 3:40 you state (paraphrasing) "at 13%, introduce fuel". The P&W Manual states 12-13% (depending on engine variant) is the MINIMUM Ng to introduce fuel -not the TARGET Ng. If your battery is healthy, or you're starting on an EXTERNAL Power Source, why not let the engine spin-up to a speed closer it's potential? You'll not exceed any Starter time-limits, and you'll get a cleaner, cooler start! In mine (-140) cold-start, external source the engine will spin-up to 18-19%, if I go for every last turn the battery will give me, easily. However, turning it quite that far is unnecessary and unhelpful. I generally put the fuel in (on a cold-start) when the engine is still accelerating on the battery, through 17%. Warm engine starts are based on Ng AND ITTºC -again around 17% and cooling through 180ºC on my engine.
@RadioSaigons
@RadioSaigons 3 года назад
hmmm... seems my reply was clipped. You later 03:46 speak of "...half the igniters, burning..." Ahhhhhmmmm sorry, just Nope. Your igniters are an All-or-Nothing proposition. They're either all ON or they're all OFF. There's no half-way deal. Unless you have a fault that requires engineering assistance. At that point of your engine-start, and listening to your engine, I assume you mean you have half of your engine FUEL-NOZZLES active -which is precisely how PT6 engines start. At around 38% Ng, you'll hear your engine accelerate again, see a lower ITTºC peak and an increase in your displayed fuel-flow. That is your Secondary Fuel Nozzles engaging. The engine will then stabilise at around 48-52% Ng, with the starter disengaged and ITT stable. Start complete.

I bet the answer is as simple as a regulator turning a field off and on to charge the batteries. The battery does the rest. Sorry my mind follows tributaries at times. Thank you kindly for the effort of the reply.

@@RadioSaigons I’m not saying that everything this guy said in this video is perfect (I don’t think it is), but as far as procedure goes you are arguing the aircraft manufacturers checklist vs an engine manual. In any aircraft there are checklists for things like starting the engine, you take on a lot of liability in deviating from that just because you think you know more about the engine than the company that chose to put it into their aircraft.

hello ..... can you explain how you select the GEN ON pefor you start any sources for the generator to be selected ?? OR that was (ALTERNATOR) ? because ther is no APU or engine GENERATOR before start any one of them So you don't have APU in your airplane which means NO APU GEN generaror !!SO the only source it can be available to you to transfer DC to AC is the ALTERNATOR (wech is you van technically consider it as( GENERATOR ) So is that what you mean ?

Awesome video, can't beat that start up sound it's just beautiful. Quick question.... How does the turbine start on these without (im assuming) any bleed air from an APU or GPU etc? Is the battery alone powerful enough to start the turbine?
@rpope6150

PT6 engines utilize a starter-generator, which draws power from the aircraft battery to start. Once the engine is on-speed, the starter-generator changes roles and provides power to the aircraft DC buses.

I believe all the TBMs have an 850 SHP engine, but the Pilatus PC-12NG & NGX has a 1200SHP engine. Now the TBM all re supposed to the fastest planes of their types, but they only seat 6 people including the pilot. The PC-12s can be configured to seat up to 11 or 12 including the pilot.
@EstorilEm
@EstorilEm 2 года назад
They’re not really comparable aircraft - also it’s thermodynamic power is technically 1800hp but is flat-rated to 850. The pilatus is more of a utility aircraft, the TBM is a small vip type aircraft with jet-like speeds.

@AirplaneAcademy

I'm using older gopros here and the stabilization isn't as good as it is in the newer models. Sometimes certain vibration frequencies can rattle the mount and camera more than others. Some RPM's are smoother than others.

At 13% ng introduce fuel and half the igniters ? are burning. At 52% another set of igniters ? will come on. In your talk through you have repetitively refered to the injectors as igniters. Is there a reason for this or do you mean fuel injectors ? As in at 13 % Ng introduce fuel so first ring of injectors ignite followed by at 52% second rise in itt due to second ring of fuel injectors igniting which is a bit high I thought, followed by stater disengagement and revert to generating.

Why does the plane shake so much with the engine running on th ground?
@itHurtswhenIP

because during check list the engine ramps up enough to provide thrust. With brakes applied and thrust.. the frame shakes as it has no way to exert that energy. this is normal as this procedure is to check if the engine is performing under load before takeoff.

A generator creates both AC and DC. But in essence its an altenator with a rectifier circuit.
@RadioSaigons
@RadioSaigons 3 года назад
Not silly at all. The PT6 series engines have a Starter/Generator. It functions as a Starter until about 48% Ng, then as a Generator once the Start cycle is complete. It supplies DC electrical current to the aircraft battery and electrical busses. There is also a Standby (emergency) Alternator (AC, rectified) which can supply electrical needs in the event of a loss of Generator output in-flight.
@crawford323
@crawford323 3 года назад
RaggedyVan Again a question from an uneducated point of view. Generators depend on constant or a constant RPM to output consistent voltage and amperage. What ensures this? Thryristors? Capacitor? battery banks? Just curious.
@RadioSaigons
@RadioSaigons 3 года назад
Sorry @@crawford323 , that's probably a question best directed to an engineer or electrical technician. I'm merely a driver. In the PT6 installation, the Starter/Generator is directly driven by the Accessory Gearbox AGB, which is in turn driven by the Power Turbine. I'd imagine that would be at a fairly consistent speed, within relatively close constraints. Similarly, the Alternator is belt-driven from the AGB. I'm sure there'll be somebody able to weigh-in with more specific detail than I'm able to provide.

When my new TBM 940 arrives, I'm going to use those buttons like babies. I'll push it once, calmly to cancel the warning. Sadly if people are so quick to cancel them, they might habitually do it during a real warning situation and not actually pay attention to the said warning.
