@@satchrules101 Hey, thanks for watching and posting... this is a new issue for me. I'm not sure that I fully understand what you are saying. Here's what I think you mean: you record one loop, and that goes along fine. Then, when it is playing back, you want to overdub a part, but every time you try to overdub on top of the original loop, the pedal only allows you to record a new layer for a few seconds. And it only records part of your overdub, instead of allowing you to continuously record over the original loop. Is this correct? The wording that you use that confuses is me is that you say "when i try to over dub it will only over dub for like few seconds and automatically starts playing". The loop should already be playing the entire time that you are overdubbing, so I don't know what you mean by it "automatically starts playing". Some clarification / elaboration might be helpful. Feel free to reply, and hopefully we can figure it out!

Hi ! I've bought a Ditto Looper last August, and I'm very happy having bought it. but I use it only at home, cause I've tried in live situation ; I had to "record" the Loop of the rythmic while I was singing, and then press on the Looper to have the rythmic at the right second, to be able to play a solo. So I don't find it easy for live situations, but good sound, and very simple to use. A good Looper. CIAO BYE !
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 10 лет назад
I'm glad you're happy with it! I think that you'll be able to use it live, once you get some practice with it. It took me a little while to get used to adding it to my looping setup, but I'm mostly comfortable with it now. Thanks for watching and sharing the video!
@lorenzino1
@lorenzino1 10 лет назад
Jeff Miller Hi ! No, you didn't understood what I was meaning, do I think. I don't wanna use it no more in live situations cause if I can't do all the things i want it's not vause I must practice it ; I've practiced it a lot since last August, but I just can't add the percussions played on my guitar, A Bass line or a riff that's making the song swinging better, things like that. Like I've said, I can just play the rythm part while I sing, and then "put it" to play a solo or the melody. That's all I can do with it. But for my videos on youtube, it's a very good Looper. And 85/90 % of the songs I play are Bossa Novas, MPB, so it's not as easy to improvise a solo than with a twelve bars Blues, for exemple. But anyway, I like it very much. I'm no more "alone" playing guitar....CIAO BYE, and thanks for your answer.

Yo! I just bought this pedal and it works great with a clean sound but when trying a distorted sound the loops drowned each other out. Are they only made for clean ideas or do I need a more expensive model? Thanks for any information ✌️
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, Mark! The good news is that you do not need to get any fancier looping pedal. At its most basic level, a looping pedal just records exactly what you send to it, and spits it back out. The bad news is that distorted guitar signals will get muddy more quickly. You can experiment with where you put your distortion, if you are using a pedal. I typically put the looping pedal last in the signal chain, so that the pedals don't affect anything except for my live guitar sound. If you are using amp distortion, then you don't have a choice - everything will be affected by the distortion. If you check out some of my more distorted electric pieces, you can probably hear that I keep the parts simple and distinct. Here's an example - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z-rPM1h3mIQ.html

@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 2 года назад
You are correct! I give lessons and teach clinics for looping, and always suggest that new loopers should not get single-button looping pedals. There's just too much to keep track of, and it is not intuitive. My main looping pedal (the Boomerang +) has five buttons and a roller wheel.

The ditto is the first looper that I bought an after experimenting with many other sophisticated loopers… I came back to it. Some what confuse as how to erase overdubs I thought you can erase the overdubs successively similar to how you record them. … I could
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 2 года назад
Thanks for checking it out, Peter! Your message got cut off, but it seems like you were asking about the undo/redo function. If the loop is in playback mode, you can erase all of the most recent overdub session by holding the button down for about 3 seconds. Note that I wrote "overdub session", and not "all overdubs". If you press the button to start recording, and then press it again to complete recording, that is one session. If you then start recording more overdubs, that is a separate session. When you hold down the button to perform the undo function, only the most recent session will be deleted.

Hey man I just got this pedal. This video is so helpful. I get a harsh gap between the loop about everything 3rd loop around. Is that my playing or am I just not doing it right?
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 5 лет назад
Hey Ian - thanks for watching. Have you figured out your issue? Are you saying that you get this gap (you mean a period of silence, right?) only after the loop plays 3 times through? And that it has this gap every 3 times the loop plays through (i.e. at the end of the 3rd, 6th, 9th, etc. cycle)?
@ianfancher
@ianfancher 5 лет назад
Jeff Miller yes. It is very touchy about where I start and stop with my playing.
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 5 лет назад
@@ianfancher Are you saying, yes to figuring out the issue? Timing issues are usually the result of user error. The pedal doesn't know when you want it to record, it just records when you tap the switch, so you have to be careful to be playing when you want it to record. If you aren't playing, it's going to record silence. I hope that helps! Looping can be like learning a new instrument.

Thanks for the video Jeff! Was wondering if and how you can get a continuous loop going? Mine seems to stop at some point.
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching, Gary. I want to make sure that I understand your issue, because I don't think I've heard of this problem before. Are you saying that you record a loop. Let's say its 4 measures long, so you tap the pedal on beat one and again on beat 17 (end of beat 16). Then the loop plays back, and you can either continue to listen to it (or solo over it), or you can tap to record overdubs. But it only plays back maybe 10 ten times, and then it stops by itself, without you double tapping the footswitch? Is that close to what you are experiencing? My first thought with these strange glitches is that the power supply must be at fault. Have you checked to make sure that it matches the requirements for the pedal? I've had some issues with my Ditto over the years (very unpredictable; it has happened maybe 5-8 times in 5 years) where it just suddenly stops playing, or I'll be recording my first loop, and when I press the footswitch to mark the end of the loop, it just stops working (and none of my loop plays back). Unplugging and replugging the power supply in always fixes it, but it's very inconvenient when this happens in a live show!
@garymiller531
@garymiller531 5 лет назад
Thanks for quick response Jeff, Maybe that's it. Here's what I'm wondering, let's say you play one chord and stop, will it continuously play that chord over and over again non-stop?

Thanks so much for you video, helped a lot. There is one question in my mind where i never found an answer and also failed as i tried by myself... maybe you could answer the question if possible... sorry for disturbing :-) Is it possible, to safe my "loop of the day" on the computer? It looks like my computer isnt able to find the Ditto Looper while i plug in with an USB... mhhhh maybe its me ^^ i am just a beginner
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching and writing! The USB port is only used for software updates, unfortunately. If you want to save a file of your loop audio to a computer, you will need to send the signal from the looper into your computer. There are a few ways to do this. A couple of those are: 1) Most computers have built-in microphones now, and if you have an audio recording program, you could try this. If there is one built into the computer, it is likely to be of low quality, so this it probably not a great option 2) You could purchase one of many digital interfaces, which would allow you to record the output of your looper directly to your computer. If all you care about is capturing the performance / loop audio, then you could get a pretty inexpensive interface (less than $50 new), and plug the output of the looper into the input of the interface. The interface would then plug into the computer, via USB or firewire, etc. Many interfaces come with audio recording software, or you could also download a program for free. If you have more questions, or are looking at a specific product or program, feel free to let me know.

@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 4 года назад
Thanks for watching. As to reliability, I'd give it a B or a B-. I've been using it for, hmmm, I think 6 years now. In that time, it has failed on me maybe 6 to 10 times. Each time, though, I've gotten it back to normal operation by unplugging it and plugging it back in. After maybe the third time, I started testing it before "using it for real" by recording a short period of silence, and then making sure that it can go into overdub mode. Good question! It's been a long time since I've had an issue with it. Fingers crossed...

hi jeff great video my wife has bought me one of these as an xmas gift although i'm not allowed to use it until then, which is killing me! quick question though: when you double tap and playback stops, is the playback stopped, or is it paused? ie if you tap the button to resume playback will it always start again from the beginning of the loop? and with the undo/redo feature does the pedal recognise to take out the current layer from as soon as you press and hold, or do you have to wait a second or two befopre it takes out that layer? i couldn't tell very well from this video. i'm wondering if you wanted take out a layer and then bring it back in if you have to pre-emptively be pressing and holding the button down. i hope that made sense

In other words, the next time that you hit play, it plays from the beginning.As for the undo/redo function, your guess is correct about there being a little bit of a delay. This can make things a little challenging as far as trying to time the removal and addition of parts, but the more you do it, the more you'll get used to the amount of time that it takes for the pedal to realize that you are tap-holding (as opposed to simply tapping). There has to be a little delay, because the pedal needs to take that time to identify the operation as a hold. Otherwise, it would see it as a short tap, and stop the loop.
@theycallmejpj
@theycallmejpj 10 лет назад
thanks very much jeff =) i guess if you had a 2 bar or 4 bar loop you could stop playback whilst doing a short fill and bring it back. and for the layers as long as you aren't playing during the last half of the last bar in a loop you could undo/redo quite smoothly. hopefully i'll have some loops of my own up after xmas! thanks again

Thanks for watching - sorry that you're having some trouble. My follow-up video to this one addresses the issue of being off a little when you tap the button a second time. It's at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vAxRowy7nOg.html To answer in text, though: It sounds like you figured out the issue. You are most likely tapping the button at not exactly the right time. You have to be exactly on time if you want to record alongside of an already-recorded part (like the drum machine, assuming it's playing a loop). If you are off by just a little bit, the problem will get magnified every time your Ditto loop cycles. For example, even if you are off by just a tenth of a second, by the tenth time through, it will sound off be a whole second. I use two loopers in my live setup, and sometimes I use both of them playing at the same time. It takes time and practice to get to the point where there isn't a little difference between them. I still screw it up sometimes . . .

if you store a loop in the pedal does it stay in memory if you do not erase it? i.e. the pedal loses power, do you loose the loop as well? Great review!

Thanks, Robert! Good question, too. To my surprise, the last loop creation that is done in the Ditto does actually stay in memory, even if the power is turned off. I'm not sure that this is all that useful, unless you create something that you absolutely love, but need to transport the pedal to somewhere else where you can plug it into a computer to more permanently record the audio or something like that.

Thanks for the information Jeff. I was looking for a way to record an intro for one specific song that I could use the pedal to play when my band plays out. Not really using the full purpose of the pedal, but I was looking to see if the pedal board lost power would it still hold the loop in memory so I wouldn't have to record it each time, just run the loop with the backing track.
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 5 лет назад
A lot of looping pedals have sd card slots, if that would be a better route for you. That way, you could store a loop on the card, and still use the looping pedal for other things, without fear of losing that intro loop that you created for use with your band. Just a thought.

Hey good video . I've seen that there's a digitech Looper in a similar price range , what are your thoughts on the ditto vs digitech jam man express ? Is the ditto better in your opinion ?
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 10 лет назад
@112705380855949598396 I can't speak to the sound quality of the digitech loopers (I had heard that they "color" your original tone in older pedals, but I'd be a little bit surprised if that was the case with the newer ones). But the Jam Man Express XT has a pretty cool feature, as listed here (www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JamManExpress?adpos=1t1&creative=9298040641&device=c&network=g&matchtype=b&gclid=Cj0KEQiAtZWkBRC9ibSfhoKEyLYBEiQA5fDxkWT1RXS8bKV5E5Vomt1TytzZTplbUjyBD9t6Mgi5pjcaArye8P8HAQ): you can purchase multiple Jam Man Express XT models, and sync them together, so that if you wanted to bring loops in and out while a second looper keeps playing, you can do that (you can kind of do that with the ditto, via the undo/redo function).Apart from that, I'm not up on the features of the digitech single-button looper. My feeling is that they are all pretty similar (and limited, because of their single-button design). While they are more affordable than the bigger pedals, they are much less user-friendly.

Your loop is so flawless. Sorry, but may i ask you a question about my Ditto Looper. I posted it on TCElectronic forum but nobody answered me. It will be nice if you could help me, sir. Here is my post: Ditto Looper looping time problem. "I have read the manual and learnt from some youtube aces but i still haven't figured what my problem is. When i tap the button, the light turns red and i started recording my tune, after finishing it, i tap again and it turns green. The problem is my tune doesn't start from beginning as soon as Ditton turns green, but it waits for a moment then start my loop. I figured out that my Ditto only loops at a stable period of time, independent of my tapping. I did experiments that i tap to turn it red then start playing, about some seconds after that, the looper automatically goes back to the beginning and my loop suddenly messes up. Is there anyone out there encountered the same problem? Please let me know. Thank you in advanced!"
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 7 лет назад
Hi - sorry for the late response - RU-vid put your comment in my Spam folder for some reason. The Ditto (and any other looper) starts recording right when you tap the pedal. There is no reason to wait to see that the light is red. In fact, I am usually already playing before I tap the pedal. This helps to make sure that there is no silence at the beginning of your loop. My LOTW #22 covers this a little bit -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vAxRowy7nOg.html I hope this helps to answer your question. I don't understand what you mean about the looper automatically going back to the beginning later in your comment. Are you saying that the loop starts without you even tapping the pedal a second time? I have never heard of that happening to anyone before you mentioned it. Have you double-checked your power supply specs?

I'm looking to purchase this as a gift and know nothing about it. It is for a beginner guitarist. I am trying to decide between the Ditto Looper you are showing and the Boss RC3 Loop Station Pedal. Which would you recommend? Thank you.
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 7 лет назад
Hi - thanks for watching! For a beginning guitarist (even a beginning looper) I would not recommend looping pedals with only one button (like the Ditto and the RC-3). This is because there are multiple foot taps that need to be done to operate the pedal (e.g., pressing twice to stop the loop or holding the pedal down to erase the recording). Pedals with multiple buttons are much more user-friendly, and require less multi-tasking and thinking. Some people have a hard time thinking of different kind of foot presses when they are already thinking of the music that they are playing, what's coming up next in the song, etc. If you are only choosing between those two, however, I would recommend the Ditto, because it is simpler. The Boss pedal has extra bells and whistles that I find to be unnecessary, and can potentially get in the way of enjoying live looping. I hope that helps!

It can be difficult to sift through everything. When I first started looping in 1998, there were really only two (semi) affordable options, so the decision was mostly made for me. Now every pedal company makes one (some companies make as many as 4 or 5 different looping pedals!). That said, there are variations in all of them, of course. But a good place to start for looping pedals with more than one button on them would be the Ditto X2 or the Ditto X4. A nice version with more bells and whistles (and a higher price tag) is the Boomerang III . I hope that helps - it can be overwhelming, even for people who are familiar with the pedals!

It sounds like you are not following the power ratings. @JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 10 лет назад
xmetalxx Hey - thanks for watching.No one has ever asked me about volume swells. I guess it depends on what you're having issues with. You can definitely do volume swells. Are you trying to make your first loop (the initial recording) include volume swells? If so, that can be a little tricky, but it's mainly a matter of timing. You need to know how you want the loop to sound before you hit record. If the swell starts from silence, then you need to know when the height of the swell (the highest volume) will be in the measure. And you need to know when to hit the record button with your foot. If the swell starts from the downbeat with silence, then you need to record that silence, too.Does that make sense? Again, I'm not sure what your specific problem is, so I'm guessing at solutions here...

@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 5 лет назад
Hey Johnny - thanks for watching! I'm not sure that I understand your question, or what you mean by "arming" the record function. The moment that you press the footswitch, the pedal begins recording. The user controls the length of time for the loop by the first and second taps of the footswitch. Or are you asking about overdubbing? If that's what you mean, then I do often put it back in "record" (I say "overdub" to try to reduce confusion as to whether we are talking about recording the very first loop, or overdubbing additional parts) mode just a bit before I do overdubs. But sometimes that's not possible. For example, if I'm playing a solo that will end by going straight into recording some overdubbed parts, then I can't press the button again until right when the overdubbed parts are going to start. Otherwise, I would record part of the solo... I hope that helps. Let me know if I answered you correctly!

No, it should sound exactly the same as the live guitar. Unity gain is right around 1 or 2 o'clock on the dial (close to pointing it at the upper right corner of the pedal). I don't know why they set it this way, but that's how it is on mine. But if it sounds distorted or lower-quality, that sounds like a possible power adapter issue. The adapter has to be center negative, nine volts, and at least 100 mA (another user has written that the pedal won't work if the adapter has too high of a mA rating, but I think it needs to be much higher, say 1000 instead of 100). Did you ever have trouble with a pause in the playback of the loop?
@JeffMillerOnline
@JeffMillerOnline 11 лет назад
I'm not sure what you mean by a pause. My guess is that you mean that the loop is just slightly longer than what you intended to record; is that correct? I've never had issues with the ditto in that regard. It may just be a matter of your timing. If you are hearing a moment of nothing (no sound, just a split second of dead air), then there might be an issue with the pedal. But if it's more like what I call a hickup, then I would suggest working on your timing. When I first started looping years ago, it wasn't uncommon for me to mis-record some loops, usually with a tiny bit of extra time at the end of the loop, so that it doesn't "come around" smoothly. Make sure that you think of the beginning and the end of your loop as the exact same moment. For exampe, if you tap your foot when you play, the first downbeat is the beginning of the loop, and once the phrase repeats, that next first downbeat will be when you hit the pedal again. I hope that makes sense... it's a little bit difficult to type about it. A side note: I have had a couple strange issues with the pedal during live shows. The one that I remember clearly was the first time that I tried to use the pedal in public. I could not get the loop to stop. I double tapped. I tripple tapped. I changed the quickness of my foot taps. But the loop just wouldn't stop. I had to turn the volume knob all the way down in order to continue with the song. Then I had to unplug the pedal and plug it back in again before it would function normally again. Something else happened a month or two ago, but I can't remember what effect it had. It wasn't as debilitating as the first incident. Anyway, I hope my explanation helped somewhat. If it didn't, feel free to write again, and hopefully I can still help!
