still think I want to try this, but I appreciate the in-depth analysis. There's not enough like this on RU-vid, reckon you've got yourself another subscriber!
Thanks for the comprehensive review! I'm currently using a Keeley 30ms Double Tracker to achive this effect (going out through different distortion pedals and stereo effects to two different amps) and I've been happy with it. Looking forward to trying the Mimiq and seeing how it compares.
This would be good for a hard rock organ too. (for a clonewheel when you can't have or you can't carry a 200 kg Hammond B3). Sometimes the keyboard player wants to use a single distortion but one amp for each frequency range (lows to mids and mids to highs). In that situation, this mimiq box would be useful to split the signal as well as adding some space to the sound.
Could you put the pedal after the mic (sm57 or any other mic) which is micking your amp ? This way, the sound guy would have a stereo signal, and you don't need two amps.
I guess you could use the FX-send of your guitar channel on the mixing console and feed it to another channel. But if it's just some house FOH-dude he will probably look at you really dumb while breathing through his mouth.
i use an ABY for guitar/bass using an octave pedal, and when i use a second guitar amp, i just use a cheap delay pedal with the time all the way down. it gives it some stank/widening.
Cool video and really awesome intro song 😎🤘🏻🤘🏻 !! I see two killer ways of using this pedal that could have been covered in this video. 1- using the TC Mimiq with a drum beat machine like the SDrum or the BeatBuddy to throw some riffs. The pedal would give you the depth and the thickness needed even if you are playing alone with a drum. A kind of a band feel. 2 - Using this pedal with a Stereo looper. You could use the first double tracking option to put some rythm on the looper and then you would play your lead using the center. This should avoid the typical mush of loopers when you add different layers. And of course combining an Sdrum or BeatBuddy, a Stereo looper and the Mimiq would be heaven to practice.
Hey man, thanks for the killer "metaaaaaaal" review and for being yourself as always. I love your personality, hope to see you in person. NAMM 2019 maybe ?
When i think of a good example of doubling, I think of the Beatles lead vocals. They do the double by going back and singing the same thing without hearing the first version. The imperfection makes for a very realistic and human sound.. Beautiful.
Great review. This is the pedal I've wanted somebody to make for the last 10 years for playing in a 3 or 4 piece band with just guitar, bass, drums and vocals... double tracking with a 'humaniser'. But as Henning says I can see the downside of the delayed dubs messing with your core tone and timing. A pedal to be used discreetly I think... I wouldn't want it on for the whole gig but the live effect of bringing in a riff with just guitar, and then kicking in the MIMIQ when the bass and drums come in would be killer!
Very honest review. I have not tuned in for a while, but I have noticed that your playing has improved quite a bit. nice going. I tend to agree that this pedal definitively shines in stereo application, no brainer for recording. I am not sure how well they are going to sell the mini version, which is only mono in mono out. thank you for the review.
The old Digitech IPS-33B can do exactly as you describe. It can randomize the delayed signal and make it truly sound like two different guitar players playing the same lines similar to this pedal, but with the added natural nuance differences in tuning precision you would hear with the differences in finger pressure and playing technique. I have used it for exactly that purpose and it sounds absolutely amazing! But good luck finding one...
Only sort of, I've got the Flashback X4 and know what you're talking about, but I think that's just the room sound that's similar, the other effect is that the doubler spreads out your sound to make it sound like it's occupying a wider field.
Idk what Royal Blood is, but if you're trying to overdub your playing with bass I highly recommend GraphTech Ghost + Hexpander + Boss GP-10. I have a stereo 1/4" cable with a magnetic and piezo output and a 13-pin with my bass coming out of my guitar now, and I'm about to run the magnetic and piezo outputs through two mimiqs :)
I asked Tore at TC about this being used in a stereo setup where all the stereo happens in the FX loop so the mimiq would also be in the stereo FX loop setup and he said that's how he would use it. You should try running the left side in the FX loop of the Diezel then the right side out on the mimiq into the FX loop return of the Engl to just use it as a second power amp for the Diezel's pre and see how that sounds. Odds are even better and a bit more natural since you're doubling the same preamp sound just like you would if you double tracked guitars playing the same part (just slightly differently) through the same amp instead of doubling two different sounds through the front of two different amps.
yes, you are fully right, that would work... but you still need 2 amps, 2 cabs etc. The main point is that the effect is only really effective (haha) when used in stereo!
Very true, I wasn't questioning that. It's pointless in mono in front of one amp if I'm being honest about it. I was just saying that the placement of it in the FX loop of one amp then split into a second amp as a slave/power amp would work even better than out front of two amps when used in stereo. At least that's what Tore said when I asked about using it in my rig. I play in stereo and all my stereo splitting happens post preamp(s) out into two power amps and into two 4x12 cabs which is why I asked him if this would work in what is essentially a stereo FX loop setup and he said..."It works great in an fx loop. That's how I would use it. And if you play in stereo the sound is gonna be massive." Thus why I suggested you try it that way instead of into the front end of two different amps.
thx man ...just what I needed for a decision to make......best regards from the area of Stuttgart/Germany...I am Thanatos, vocalist/guitarist of the Metal Band PHALANX
A good method for live is use 2 different mics (57 and M201 or e609) on 2 different speakers of the 4x12. And do one "Lead" channel and one "Fatt" channel, so you have the position of your guitar player in the mix but still the fattnes of a double tracked guitar. With this pedal and a 2nd amp + speaker this will work great! The don't have to be the same amp (but similar type) - even if one amp is a little cleaner it can give nice clarity and still a great distorted sound. Happy experimenting!
When I record I actually like to take the same dry signal, copy it, and apply a different model (or reamp, depending how I'm doing it) or even the same amp but set slightly differently, and spread them out in stereo. I don't actually play the part twice but it adds a good amount of thickness.
You need to set effect and dry to maximum to get a really good effect! You never did that in the review. I mean, you have your dry (original signal) at half and the double at half... of course, it sounds like a chorus or soft delay.
To get the magic effect you’re after… record some transient sounds at the end of your guitar track, with the tightness twice as loose as you’d like. Then after you’ve recorded , roughly align the transients. Now you no longer have the Haas issues. You could do this live if you could deal with a slight delay on your unaffected guitar (mono delay, one repeat).
I think this pedal is genius and already preordered it. I understand what you're saying about the tightness feeling while playing. In a recording situation a good solution would be to use this pedal only for reamping. I think, that's how I would use it.
Im running two amps about 8 feet apart...a (heavy mids) Randal Diavlo (Dry ) and a (scooped mids) Marshall (Wet) with single dub and it does a FANTASTIC job of recreating a double track. The 2 dubs is kind of odd souding for me but hey... just my opinion!
Did you do the firmware update? There is a second firmware update on a tc forum that is suppose to fix the dubs two where the center dub gets pushed to the side, did you do that update?
I'm kind of bummed out. After seeing/hearing the great semi-dirty tone in the second video/Mika Vandborg demo, I was excited about this pedal. A TCE rep claimed in the comments that it was a mono demo. Between this review, and some great points brought up by an individual on a guitar forum I frequent, my excitement has fizzled away. Now I'm not so sure it's worth the investment, all be it minimal. Anyhow, as always, great video, great review.
i will be running this into two amps - into the power amp of Bogner 212 Valve combo and into a Laney Pulse tube preamp into a Boss Katana 100 head and Carvin 212 (for my wet channel) - anything to keep in mind before attempting this?
One thing that I keep wanting to see from all the reviews on this pedal, is the actual waveforms recorded onto two different tracks in a DAW. How close do they resemble each other with tightness at the extremes? Or with tightness in the middle? I want to see the imperfections in those waves to see that it isn't simply a sample delay, but something a bit more sophisticated. Couldn't I get a similar effect by automating my second guitar track with slightly moving Has effect (a sample delay moderately sawing back and forth between 0ms and 30ms) and then automate another small sawing of pitch by cents? Point is, show me the waveforms, and turn the tightness knob while recording to see how much of a difference it makes.
So if i'm using two amps, and i have the two amps on simultaneously, (i'm using a Lehle Little Dual), in order to pan the two dubs in stereo, would i have to put this pedal infront or before my Lehle?
Genuine question - is it that much different to just having a slap back delay? I've been looking at this pedal for so long and am the only guitarist in the band, looking to make as much noise as possible. I do have two amps 😁👍🏽
In a live situation with one amp couldn't this be placed after the speaker mic ? So one amp, one speaker, one mic, then the mimic, then stereo into the PA system ?
mono sounds a bit like the matrix side of ehx flanger, hmm. But stereo, ooh yeah. I always strugel a bit, course the chorus did the stereo or the delay. But this is subtil, the way i want. Good, and well done tc!
Excellent video as usual. Question: I use a Radial JD7 to split my signal between two amps (Blues Deluxe and AC30). Both are usually miked and panned to each side. Would it work to run one of the amp signals out of the JD7, into this, and out to the amp...and then turn the dry knob all the way down and the effect knob to unity gain? And would it fatten the sound even more?
Excellent review Henning. Certainly not for the studio and I would rather play the 2nd or 3rd guitar track myself. Works good in Stereo and would help the band with a single guitarist to thicken things up a bit. Certainly think in Mono it's pointless. Not exciting at all this pedal and in many aspects pointless.
Another idea would be to take 2 Torpedo LIVE, one with Greenbacks, one box with Vintage 30. Add to this 2 different mics, and you have a great tone spread. Doesn't save you too much money, but still. Better than a 2nd Mesa Boogie.
Interesting. I wonder if putting something like an AC Tone or American Sound before this, then connecting both the stereo outputs straight to a PA would work for live gigs.
I recently bought a fretless bass and I was looking at getting a pedal that can replicate double tracking at a rate of about 20 milliseconds. I have been demoing a Boss, but I don't know if it will track at 20 milliseconds. If the Mimiq will do it then I will add a bit of reverb and chorus and I will have found the holy grail.
Here's an idea for 2 guitar player bands: bring 3 amps, the Mimiq and a mute switch. Rhythm guitarist splits via the Mimiq into two amps. Mute the second amp by default and unmute it when the lead guitarist plays a solo. Bam, double guitar rhythm at all times. Br00tz
I have one. I like it. I use 2 amps. Great. BUT - I have no idea how to use the L+R input. If I put it after my stereo chorus or a ping-pong echo, it just mushes the L+R effects together - sounding like mud. I have no idea why it's not simply a mono input, stereo output. What am I missing?
Thanks. Have you tried to input the MimiQ in stereo? How are the dubs of the left and right inputs panned in the output channels on the different dub settings? Thanks in advance. Z.
I use the compensated out of my Diezel Einstein into the Mimiq, then stereo to the FOH mixer, so I have the doubled sound of my guitar left and right for the audience. You see - you don't need 2 Amps to use the Mimiq in a live situation. Viele Grüße!
So what about mono doubling? You don't get the stereo field, but do you not also get a fuller result, doubled mono? Can this pedal accomplish something like that without stereo? It seems that it would work well, since adding a 3rd or 4th guitar is nothing but doubling up on a single channel after you have the stereo field.
question! with the pedal turned off in a stereo rig, would the dry signal only come out of the one amp connected to the mono output? or would identical dry signals come out of both amps?
@EytschPi42 While configured with stereo outputs, does the pedal only send signal to the mono out when in bypass mode? In other words; would both amps still be heard?
Über die PA Im Proberaum schon getestet. Amp miked hart links und parallel dazu den Mimiq mit nachgeschaltetem Mooer Radar (Mimiq setting: 1 double, 0% dry Signal, FX Signal 100%) hart rechts. Funktioniert super. Am Samstag Live-Einsatz...
It's a cool concept but if you use more than one channel on both amps then you would need to figure out channel switching. Also even though I was listening through computer speakers I still heard a phasing effect that I wasn't crazy about in both the single and double amp test. Great review Henning...
Let's say you only have one amp, but an extra cab and the amp has two channels. Can you just use an A/B/Y switch to achieve the true stereo effect as using 2 amps?
I think the real issue is that when a guitarist doubles a part by recording it twice, the performances will always contain tiny differences in things like timing & tone. To my ears, the magic in the sound of doubled guitars is in the overlay of two parts which aren't exactly the same...really, really close, but never exactly the same.
well, that is what this algorithm does... it changes timing and pitch and it probably continually changes it... that is why it sounds exactly like doubled guitars when you hear it in stereo.
Pretty good in stereo, but it's quite unusual to use two different heads in a live performance. Instead in mono for me it doesn't work. It seems a Behringer Chorus XD
So quick question: I saw your demo on the Boss DD500 that had a 'stereo doubler' preset, and sounded like a similar effect. How much different is the Mimiq to that preset on the Boss? Or anything equivalent to the Boss on something else?
great review, I just got one and I love it..it's great for sans-amp setups..I'm using it in my modulation section right before a stereo reverb then to inputs 1/2 on my interface. I'm debating putting it earlier in the chain and doing more of a "wet / dry" type setup. curious to see in the software if they let you tweak a proper M/S setup?
right now I'm using a couple "amp sim" type pedals, a cheap joyo ACTone (vox ish with a cab sim) and a SFT by Catalinbread which is an ampeg style amplification. I have some Kingsley stuff on order so that will become my main amp pre. I really am impressed with the Joyo for the cost so it works for now. I'm considering either the Iconoclast by Naunaber or GFI System Cabzeus. If none of those pan out I'll probably end up looking at the more costly Two Notes Torpedo.
just caught this... 2 small amps, VERY awesome way to get stereo big sound. even 2 little Marshall 12W practice combos with a stereo source (quality of course) sounds huge. and the further apart you can get them, the better the sound (within reason) ;)
Glad I watched this because I thought this pedal did a "dual lead guitar" sound - but it doesn't - it adds thickness, fatness, and warmth, which isn't bad - just not what I thought it did. BTW - what is the current cool "dual guitar" pedal? My Harmonizers are supposed to do it, but they are super scale specific. Is the short delay time thing still the best option?
I tried this in stereo on headphones clean and I noticed some weirdness from time to time that is not an issue with metal or rocking out. I'm tempted to say early on that this pedal is not so suited for clean and quiet doubling, but I'm going to give it another go when I get my iconoclast by neunabar. Also any roominess or boxiness tones...when in mono, yuk. But this pedal should only ever be used in stereo rigs.mono players will be disappointed.
In mono, when clean, it did have a cool swampy blues vibe to it. But I agree it sounds pretty useless in mono with heavy drive. Will probably pick one up to try out at some point... because I do have 2 (actually 3...) of the same amp :) But I probably won't be using it for metal!
What if you ran one cable out of the mimiq into the front of your amp input and another cable into the other (bright) input of the front of your amp? So both cables coming out of the mimiq into both inputs on front of amp? Just curious.
+EytschPi42 If you're listening through the headphone jack on the amp, will it get a 2 amp stereo sound? Will you get the stereo effect if you're using a 2x12 cab?
odd question, if you plug a stereo effect in and only use the mono out. dose it sum the stereo signal? or dose it give you the left out only? or something else altogether?
EytschPi42 Imagine you are not a rich german but a poor Polish. You have only one amp. Would it make sense to you to buy this or totally not? I heard it as "AWESOME on stereo but REALLY good on mono, too". But im a deaf person so maybe im stupid. :D
