This is a demo and review of the TC Helicon Perform VG and the TC Helicon Switch-6.
I've had this and used this effects processor every week for almost two years. Here's my experience with it.

Thanks for the down to earth review, I very much enjoyed it not seeming like a sales pitch. I ordered the processor yesterday along with the switch 6 which I am a little nervous about because it is coming from Germany in these crazy time we are living in, but none available in Canada or US at this time. I have faith it will arrive and listening to your review assures me it is a necessary accessory for the Helicon Perform.

Good to hear! Yeah unfortunately you might be in for a bit of a wait. Anything from Behringer (the parent company) is taking a bit to get over here. :/

I have had these types of systems for awhile. And your comment to the effect that you can't get the 'wet' guitar signal out separately is certainly a concern. However, you do have a 'mix' control that can completely mute the guitar out from the single XLR connection to the FOH mixer. Then, of course, you can get the 'dry' guitar signal out to an amp, where you can use the basic effects, (chorus, reverb, and delay), on a multi-effects processor; split that with a DI, and take that 'wet' signal to the board and to an amp simultaneously. But, you probably knew that! LOL! A couple of the 'Acoustic' brand amps do this really well!

Hey, thanks for the review video. You've helped me to make my mind up! I was just wondering, is using a switchboard with around 6 switches necessary or would a switchboard with 3 do just as well with no real drawbacks?
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 2 года назад
3 should be sufficient. I speak between songs, so I needed the 6 in order to toggle off vocals Reverb and delay between songs as well as use tap tempo and control harmonies. So if you knew the functions before hand, you could make that happen.

I wonder if an XLR cord that Y-splits into two TS (unbalanced) cords will separate the mic from the guitar channels.

What'd you think of the Perform VG? Is this something that you would consider adding to your rig?
@jordangagnon2099
@jordangagnon2099 3 года назад
Hey there great vid, I just had one question to make things clear about the separating of signals. If you have an xlr in and out and also a guitar through, will both signals be completely separated? Or will the mic still have guitar mixed in while the through is a dry signal? I wanted to run a guitar through to a pedal board for my effects but have it through the perform vg so that the harmonies would be spot on as I don't trust the room mic. Thanks
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 3 года назад
Hey Jordan! I ran it that way for a couple years. The only thing to keep in mind is that the “thru” output for the guitar won’t have any effects (it’s a dry signal). BUT. The signals will both be separated, and you will get effects on your voice.

You said that you can use it with voice and guitar and apply the effects to both without separating them. If I were to use it as an acoustic guitar effects only (not using it for voice) would it add effects like reverb and delay for the guitar that could go into the house? I would only have the guitar plugged into the effects unit. My scenario would be...we have a sound guy and I wouldn't be using it for voice, but sometimes it would be nice to bring on some reverb on my guitar. Also, does it have a gain adjustment for the guitar-in jack?
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars Год назад
I haven’t tried to use it in this way personally but I do think it is definitely possible. If you were never planning on singing, I would probably consider a different scenario for a dedicated guitar effects processor. And yes, you would be able to adjust the gain through the mix and then turn the gain up or down of the overall unit.

Hey, very nice review. Really impressed by it and want to get it Just wanted to find out how I can play live with it with the guitar and mic plugged into the perform vg, what interface would I need for that? Can I also use a guitar amp?
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 3 года назад
Hey Ian! The connections for plugging in your guitar and mic are on the back of the unit. You have an XLR in for your vocals and a quarter inch in for the guitar. From there, you have two options. You can either run both effects mixed together through the XLR out, OR you can run the vocals through the (same) XLR out and a dry out signal to an amplifier. For a couple years, I used this with my electric guitar plugged in and running out to my rig, but the only real benefit of using it this way is to use the harmony feature for the voice. There is no effected (wet) signal out for just the guitar.

Hello, I'm in a journey for vocal pedal effects. I really like there more individual version like the the Mic Mechanic , duplicator, etc. But you cannot connect them in chain. The other is the acustic live play, but I find it more complicated for live situations, maybe is my perception. Do you think the VG could be in between for what I looking for? There are also the Boss like the ve 2 , ve8 . What's your recomendación? Thank you for the review
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 2 года назад
Hey Jose. I'm not sure what you mean by connecting them 'in chain'. Can you elaborate?
@josemanuel2244
@josemanuel2244 2 года назад
@@BlaisenGuitars yes, like the stombox pedal ( guitar ) you can make a pedal board , it can be connected with each other, use them individually or at the same time. I nderstand that with the mic mechanic and the only series', you can only use one ,
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 2 года назад
@@josemanuel2244 If you're talking about creating an effects change with vocal effects, you should be able to do it with small XLRs. I'm not familiar with the Mic Mechanic, but I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to add something after it using a small XLR patch cable.

How would you compare this to the TC Helicon Voicelive Play Acoustic? It looks like the VL has pretty awesome vocal FX.
@BlaisenGuitars
@BlaisenGuitars 3 года назад
I haven’t tried the Voicelive personally but I have thought about trying it due to the ability to have a separate Wet Guitar out signal. And some of those vocal effects do sound pretty sweet. 👍 The VG is only $50 cheaper, so I think the VL probably has more bang for the buck. But my understanding is that the harmonies on the VG would be more spot on because it uses the guitar notes to find optional harmonies...

Can you confirm for me, does the TC Helicon Perform VG have a Double - Doubling voice effect? (The Perform V have it as a button, and the Perform VK can Import the Doubling effect as a Preset with the app through the Beam- Beamable, but for the Perform VG I can't find the answer on the internet

I think the closest you can get is a really tight slap back delay but I don’t believe that there’s a true doubling effect.

You would have to plug the receiver into the unit on your mic stand. So it depends on what kind of wireless mic you have and how willing you are to play with different positions for the VG.

@@BlaisenGuitars thx for the quick response. What do you mean with different positions? I don't play guitar and move around, so I don't need it to be on the stand. But good to know I can use it for the wireless microphone.

@@BlaisenGuitars well there is not an option to put it on the mic stand, but this is not the point. It can be anywhere. I would like to have a wireless mic that has the possibility for turning on/off effects, double voice and harmony. I hope you can imagine what I mean 🙏

Hey Cam Cook! Thanks for dropping by, and I appreciate your take. I (in general) have preferred the effects over anything that I've been able to produce out of the Boss AD-10. I think that may largely be based on ease of use over the AD-10... I agree that there are other effects that are definitely more robust, and higher quality, but for me the form factor and ease of use are definite pluses. At some point I may look into upgrading my rig over the VG, but I'll probably always keep it around for the odd "acoustic-set-in-un-ideal-circumstances" here or there. I didn't know they were making a VG2... looking forward to what that has in store.
