On March 11, 2018, the Marine Band presented a Living History program titled Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band Tribute. The program told the story of the talented and adventurous women who served our country in a most unique and unprecedented manner. Author of the book Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women’s Military Bands During World War II, Dr. Jill Sullivan served as a guide through the personal accounts of those very women who blazed a trail for many to follow. The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band of Camp Lejeune was established under the watch of “The President’s Own” to support bond drives and was active during World War II from 1943-45. In 1944, the ensemble even sat in for one of the Marine Band’s popular “Dream Hour” broadcasts, a program that will be reenacted in its entirety as part of this concert. The performance took place in Schlesinger Concert Hall at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Va.
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, transcribed by V. F. Safranek. Finale from Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Opus 36. Conducted by Capt. Michelle A. Rakers.

wait, is this transposed down to e-flat major? cuz this sounds lower than most of the other tchaik 4 finales i found.

There are more than one transcription of this work. The older one does indeed transpose it down, as the runs lay better for clarinets and cornets. I believe Safranek made this particular transcription.

I played this on tuba with a community band that tried to do it at this tempo. It was like listening to a broken down fair organ make a valiant attempt. It was fun to play and I had a 20J tuba so I got to really honk out. Unfortunately it was an iffy at best community band.

I dont like such military wind ensembles, but this one is phantastic - and Tschaikowsky always is hard stuff

Why does it sound so dry. They should either be in a big hall or the engineer should add more reverb and make it sound more wet

Maybe because it's not in the original key? I know it's a little odd sounding to me. I'm probably not the only one.
@turnne
@turnne 3 года назад
@@fitzgerald1337x I have read through the wind version before...the version they are playing. I dont know the reason for the key change. Maybe to make it somewhat playable for winds. If I recall correctly the runs are not too bad on an upper Clarinet the way its written. Unfortunately it seems the clarinets take the brunt of the string technical passages in a wind transcription of an an orchestral work

@@turnne More than one transcription. The older one by Safranek does indeed transpose it down a step. Still, it’s a real gas.
@LyleFrancisDelp
@LyleFrancisDelp Год назад
@@turnne Exactly. In a transcription such as this one, the clarinets ARE the violin section, and old time arrangers usually chose keys that suited the clarinet section. As the key of concert Eb is a much better "lay" than concert F, Safranek transposed down a step. The runs lay really well for the clarinets. Please remember that in the late 19th century, most Americans never heard this sort of music in the concert hall with an orchestra. They heard the great music of Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, and such from traveling concert bands.

@@LyleFrancisDelp In my opinion, the Hindsley transcriptions and later Merlin Patterson work is quite good . Pieces like Till Eulenspigel and Don Juan sound quite good played by the wind band Ofcourse , they are actually harder than their originals where the strings are present

Yes a wonderful performance of pedagogy, but no passion; it seemed like a job to these musicians. Perhaps this was partly due to a guest conductor being on the podium.

For the record, Jim, the conductor is Capt Michelle Rakers, Asst Director of the Marine Band. This was her final concert with the Band; she retired on 30 April 2018. Incidentally, if absolute precision, fantastic pitch, and tempo as it was intended sounds pedagogic and passionless to you, go enjoy a recording of your local high school wind band. And yes... it is a job.

Why is it transposed? The original is an F major! That is a very friendly key to concert band! This is virtually unlistenable
@LyleFrancisDelp
@LyleFrancisDelp 8 месяцев назад
True, but the key of Eb is even better for the clarinets, allowing them to play the fast passages with ease. I know of a transcription by Mark Hindsley which keeps it in the original key, but pretty much all of the older versions transposed. In the end, don’t worry about the key. Band arrangements often transpose. Just enjoy the music.
@steftrando

@@LyleFrancisDelpso it’s a skill issue, even for a world class band? That’s unfortunate. I can’t enjoy it when the key is off. It just sounds wrong.
