"I have to admit that ever since hearing a recording of "The Three Tenors" concert in Rome from the summer of 1990, I have been drawn to the power and drama of operatic arias. Transcribing Tchaikovsky’s "None but the Lonely Heart" for cello provided me with the perfect opportunity to put myself in the shoes of an opera singer."
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Desperate, emotional, resigned and hauntingly-beautiful. In short, perfection. Bravo!

Here are words to a poem titled Alone, by Robert J. Burdette which fit this melody beautifully: ALONE I miss you, my darling, my darling, The embers burn low on the hearth; And still is the stir of the household, And hushed is the voice of its mirth; The rain splashes fast on the terrace, The winds past the lattices moan; The midnight chimes out from the minster, And I am alone. I want you, my darling, my darling, I am tired with care and with fret; I would nestle in silence beside you, And all but your presence forget. In the hush of the happiness given, To those who through trusting have grown, To the fullness of love in contentment, But I am alone. I call you, my darling, my darling, My voice echoes back on my heart; I stretch my arms to you in longing, And lo! they fall empty, apart. I whisper the sweet words you taught me, The words that we only have known, Till the blank of the dumb air is bitter, For I am alone. I need you, my darling, my darling, With its yearning my very heart aches; The land that divides us weighs harder, I shrink from the jar that it makes. Old sorrows rise up to beset me. Old doubts make my spirit their own, Oh, come through the darkness and save me; For I am alone. - Robert J. Burdette

This is the most enchanting version of the beautiful piece I've ever heard!! The sonorous, rich, and eloquent sound of cello creates such a wonderfully-sentimental ambiance that is perfect for the melody of the piece. Great performance by the both musicians! Would you allow me to use mp3 of this on my video?

Cello don't rush! Listen to recordings of Russian vocalists singing this piece. You have to do almost a Puccini-esque rubato and then finally ARRIVE at the climax of the phrase. Make the listener want it.

Where did you find the score, and is the cello part an octave lower? I enjoyed this very much.

None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness. Alone and parted, Far from joy and gladness. Heaven's boundless arch I see Spread up above me; O what a distance drear To one who loves me. None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness. Alone and parted, Far from joy and gladness. Alone and parted, Far from joy and gladness. My senses fail, A burning fire devours me; None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness
