The stage direction is also incredibly sensitive. At the very end of the scene, when German's and Lisa's eyes lock into each other's gaze... so powerful and real.
Splendid! The entire performance is available on RU-vid and the opera is a masterpiece! Domingo is superb here, despite singing some passages half a tone lower. Good Russian accent and his passionate stage involvement is admirable. This love duet is overwhelming in its desperate sexual passion, the dramatic music which ends it is simply too magnificent for words.
His accent is not Russian. But he is trying it okay. He is not pronouncing some consonants and strictly Russian vowels fast enough, like many non-Russian speakers do.;)
"singing some passages half a tone lower" -- you mean literally? Which ones? It is very interesting.. And why? I read, that Tchaikovskij edited almost all arias after notes from the conductors.. So it were not as much good singers for something he wrote at the time.
I heard this with Mattila, Guleghina, and Gorchakova and of the three (ALL of them were INCREDIBLE, don't get me wrong), it was Gorchakova who pinned you to your seat through the visceral, HEALTHY power behind her high notes. I have never experienced anything like it.
