One of the most heartbreaking pieces of classical music ever written. Tchaikovsky was a tragic genius.

As Beethoven did before him, Tchaikovsky composed from the heart. Tchaikovsky's innermost emotions of love, hope, loss, and sadness are to found in many of his compositions, and this a perfect example.

@@topsyturvyy4558 nothing strange, Tchaikovsky knew somehow that he gonna die soon, so he wrote this tragic symphony in which Fatum wins over Human, whilst in the 5th symphony the situation is pretty opposite - there a Human wins a Victory over Fatum

I owned this record as a kid (a member of the DG Society) and was weaned on it. I've listened to countless other performances of this piece and none can match the exquisite direction of Von Karajan in this piece. All other conductors seem to conduct this piece like they are waiting on a bus to me. Absolutely heart wrenching performance. Perfect.

I have always thought that nor PIT was thinking about his own death or an impossible love...he just described the cycle of life: the dangerous birth, the irresponsible joy of the early youth, the full enjoyment of life when you become an adult and the sorrow of the death. And for me, this is just outstanding

Marco Thyssen If you think this look like a later sleeve , you maybe have the earlier Karajan DGG recording from 1964 in your mind. I have the original LP of the 1976 recording and it looks exactly as the picture of this video. Karajan recorded the Tchaikovsky 6 .Symphony 7 times between 1939 and 1984 . I have listened to this video and I have identified it as the 1971 recording as written in the text.

For me, Tschaikosvky's masterpiece and, under von Karajan's direction at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic, only increases the well-deserved enjoyment of aesthetic pleasure.

Question for Tchaikovsky aficionados out there: I thought I remembered reading that the "dit-dit-dit dah" rhythm he uses around 29:29 was a tribute to Beethoven, notably the 5th symphony. Anyone else aware of that?

This recording by Karajan (1971) was made for EMI (now Warner), not for Deutsche Grammophon. Not only the cover of the video is misleading, also your info text bears a link to the album on DG page (which anyway doesn't exist anymore) saying "Remember: music isn't free. Purchase it:" but actually you make people buy the wrong album. Thanks for the upload.

This work is SO unique. However I feel some context needs to be provided, after the works premier, Tchaikovsky not being fully happy with the works programmatic nature: "After a successful premiere, however, he was not satisfied with Program Symphony (No. 6) on the title page. Several days later Modest suggested "patetichesky," which in Russian means "1, enthusiastic, passionate; 2, emotional; and 3, bombastic" (rather than "pathetic" or "arousing pity," as in English)."

Like Karajan's 1812 or Romeo and Juliet, but here the legendary Maazel (RIP) record with Cleveland is clearly superior.

Also Solti and Fricsay are better. In several moments Karajan sounds exactly as what Tschaikowsky hates (his famous words about 1812)

Tchaikovsky must have deemed his audiences totally & utterly daft who don't have a clue the first time they hear a theme, so repeat it gets repeated endless times. Bottomline this way a 10 minutes composition gets extended to 45 min. Clever, clever.

Origins of music unevidenced. Except it is gift to humanity from God the Creator. Music continues in heaven. Discontinues in hell. Jesus Christ came from heaven to earth for one purpose only - to die on cross for remissions of pre-existing sins of every single person and to resurrect. Jesus Christ providing forgiveness from pre-existing sins for every single person, salvation from eternity in hell and free entry to eternity in heaven for all who repent of sins in Jesus Christ. Other side of death is eternity. Eternity in hell. Or eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ. Penalty of pre-existing sins already paid by Jesus Christ on The Cross. Accept HIM. Be saved from eternal in hell. Enter heaven. Enjoy heavenly music. For free.
