Fridays in July / 15 Movies
The term “neo-noir” has been defined as a style in which more contemporary directors knowingly reflect the noir style of the 1940s and ’50s. The newer films are often shot in color as opposed to the glittering black-and-white of the classic era. But these newer films often retain the unusual angles, provocative use of light and shadow and, above all, a prevailing mood of anxiety and alienation. Eddie Muller, TCM’s resident film noir expert, has said of neo-noir: “I think you see filmmakers paying homage to the earlier films, but they’re excited about the possibility of doing it in a freer and more open way without the constraints that were placed on the filmmakers back in the classic era.”

When it comes to film noir Eddie Muller is the man. Ever since I started watching tcm he certainly is a bonus added attraction.what makes him so interesting is u feel he loves his job. Not only extremely adept at what he does but understands it thoroughly and it comes off being completely sincere. Love that entire group of people. Smile.

Excellent commentary, as usual, from Eddie Mueller. I'm a dedicated noir/neo noir fan, and it was fun seeing the scenes of the featured films flash by. Makes me want to have a binge session! Michael Caine is without mercy and absolutely brutal in "Get Carter".

But to live and die in la is not a neo noir film.. to live and die in la is a realistic police procedural buddy cop action movie the reason why is that all the things that happened in the movie like the elements, the trio of the 2 main characters which are richard chamce and john vukovich and the dialogue moments and influences in to live and die in la was carried over what was to come in lethal weapon... the true neo noir film is law abiding citizen.. law abding citizen is the true definitive neo noir film and they should of shown it and mention it..

Thank you so much for posting this video and for your channel as a whole! Unfortunately, TCM is not available in my country, even though it's possible to see the channel's schedule, so your channel represents a means of access to the great introductions (true classes on cinema history) given by the great Eddie Muller, and I was hoping you would be able to post his videos on Neonoir. This just made my Saturday! Thank you so much for your great work!

When neo-noir is mentioned, the first film that comes to mind is The Last Seduction (1994).

Noir made movies interesting again.I liked how most had a messy gut wrenching ending instead of the sometimes boring happily ever after.

I wonder if The Long Goodbye (1973) will be shown on TCM?

It has been at least twice that I know of. But it's not part of the July Neo-Noir schedule.

@@lewistyler462 I have two sets of intros and outros, one from May 2015 and the other from June 2019. I'll start a new playlist for TCM noir intros & outros that aren't from Noir Alley. If you're subscribed, you'll be notified when they're up. Shouldn't be long. I think I'll name the playlist 'Noir intros and outros (not Noir Alley)'. I'll strive to put them in alphabetical order.

While not on TCM's upcoming schedule, it is a part of Criterion Channels Neonoir collection, which I highly recommend checking out. They have some excellent stuff. 🙂

@@Cobralalalala It looks great. I would love to see what they would do if they released TLG on criterion. I've got a bunch of noirs and neo-noirs on my watchlist for this week.

But in the past they had to find ways around all sorts of problems!! And because they couldn't film everything it left alot up to your mind and also created an element of mystery and suspence!! I don't have to see absolutely everything!!

Thank you for posting I absolutely can’t stand so called neo noir what made noir was that you couldn’t always land on your feet at that time period and the implications or wonder of what’s happening now they just show all sex and violence boring and not noir for me

well, the constraints in the 1940s frankly made the films alot better than these so called neo noirs or 1970s. Acting just wasn't very good
