And I think the best tribute TCM has done so far is the one from 2006 ("Press On"), followed by 2010 ("Headlights"), 2013 ("In the Embers"), 2008 ("God Only Knows") and 2003 ("I Will Remember You"). All of their tributes are great (though I have issues with a few of them), but those five I think are the cream of the crop.
Chuck Amuck I agree with all of those as being the best, except 2011 (Before You Go) is above 2008 for me. Something about the clips they used, the editing and the song really get to me. 2014 had the most people who meant a lot to me, and I liked the song they used, but the clips were too fast and crowded by the extraneous footage of the house. Last year's was just sleepy and unemotional. Given the amount of incredibly important people we've lost this year, I'm hoping 2016's can be one of the best ones. Which ones did you have issues with?
AugustBlue96 The 2011 edition would probably be next on my list of the best, followed by 2004 ("Goodnight, Hollywood Boulevard") and 2012 ("Wait"). I agree that some of the clips in the 2014 tribute went by too fast and that they overdid it a bit with the shots of the house, but the song, the motif and the placement of certain individuals make up for that, IMO. The tributes I have the most issues with are 2005, 2007 ("Promises) and 2015 ("Quickly Now"). The 2005 edition wasn't bad really, but they chose an odd theme and setting and the cutaways to the bathroom were off-putting. The 2007 tribute is unremarkable and it doesn't seem like they put a lot of effort into it. Last year's tribute was too short and too fast, resulting in -- as you pointed out -- a lack of emotional impact, as well as more glaring omissions than usual. Hopefully this year TCM will do a longer, more inclusive remembrance with steadier pacing so we can actually recognize, comprehend and appreciate the people to whom they are supposed to be paying tribute.

This one has a wondefully apppropriate song by Joe Henry, but the cuts away to dismal streams and mudflats and bare branches are often given more time than the clips of real people we've lost. And yes, recent tributes with lengthy clips of geeky millenials marching in line outside and inside a mansion while the honored dead individuals are glimpsed for 2 seconds in 1/4 screen ? Very disappointing. Sometimes a relatively good tribute will have a lousy song: That Townes Van Zant tune scuttled that year's.
