You could make a video showing which is the setup for the tests: filters to eliminate noise and some other resource to be able to clean the audio outputs. It is still used in China Android head units. Just bought a new Mekede head unit with this chip an it seems really good. It does not cut down the bass at higher volume like other chips in other head units i used. Thank you for the video.

It would be interesting to look at the supply voltage at the amplifier IC pins with the scope when its loaded up. Voltage drop over the supply wiring and PCB traces can have a significant effect on maximum power in these automotive bridge amps.

ive played with the TDA7850 before its actually a nice amp for 12V. this is what you do. 4 Ohm at 16-18V supply. almost 35-40WPC. if you have a nice heatsink, 2Ohm 16V get around 45W. Another good quad chip amp is the STPA003 and 008. 16V 2 ohm almost 50W! or run a TDA7577 which is a stereo chip in PBTL 1 Ohm 16V for about 80W. i have too much fun with chip amps

I agree those terminals are crap. For use once, they are passable, if the screw heads don't mangle up first! But it's really bad news if you need to screw and unscrew a couple of times. I often end up soldering the wires to the board. I think the most irritating thing is you often cannot get a decent thickness wire even in the hole.

I'm working on a project where I want to connect the TDA7850 (just the chip, no circuit board as it sits on an Android Head Unit pcb already) to an external 18v power supply - a 12v to 18v step up converter. I noticed there are 2x VCC pins (interconnected) so wanted to ask whether I should provide power to one or both of the pins from that external power supply? Thanks

Do you have experience with the TDA 7388 chip? If so, which do you think is better between it, and this one? I know the spec sheet claims this one is a little more powerful, but that doesnt necessarily hold to be true always. Any insight is helpful! Great vids!

I'm just getting into this sort of thing as a hobby and I'm thinking of using this amp to modify a cheap soundbar. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that you're using the preamp due to running the music off your mp3. Or is the preamp used to control volume of the amp itself. Also, how much current does the amp draw at full volume?

From your results, another IC manufacturer quoting peak power, rather than RMS power, in their datasheet. EDIT: just looked into it, seems like it's the EIAJ rating, which is the saturated square wave output power. Either way it is either double or close to double the RMS rating.

Its got thermal protection, it does say its 2 ohm stable so its probably fine... Not in this implementation though with that tiny coil....

John, could some of the distortion actually be due to the front-end of the scope clipping? Your fundamental frequency is off the scale.

Hey JohnAT, Thanx again for fine work and sharing big knowledge.. What do you think of so called "Power Conditioners" ...? I think I hate them . AND their claims of drastically improving the sound quality of high end HiFi systems. Aren't most just WAY OVER PRICED power strips. I have one, was a gift, it is way empty inside. A couple MOV's , switch, indicator Neon, no filter(s), no coils. Basic nada. Can any of these power boxes be shown to improve sound beyond swelling one's head and placebo effect ...?

The datasheet(later) clearly says 20-23 watts at 14.4v at 1% Distortion.

nuh its not distorted the amp forgot something the stby pin it will distort if the vs signal input is not filtered and switch a transistor

I'd not say that the harmonic distortion was bad since it is indeed second harmonic and audiophiles appreciate those. I was really impressed by the performance of this chip. Although I doubt it can actually handle high levels of volume into 4 ohms, let alone 2 ohms. But it's a fine little chip for a home theater system I guess. If you use it with 8 ohms load at 14.4V. Should be good.

Even from China, in bulk, the TDA7850 chip costs around $10. So for an assembled board, along with all the other parts to cost $10 seems suspect. Maybe it's just a clone of another common chip.

I also always doubt, that these are genuine ICs. The amount of times, I have received obvious faked ICs from Ebay is appauling. Anyway, good review.

I advice you to check Audio Power amps. from Japanese ICs like TOSHIBA and SANYO like TA and LA respectively.... They are incredible performance than Europeans ....

Obviously this was designed to be used in a car, so your'e not going to hear much of the distortion.

It's a multichannel mosfet made for cheap car radio's, enough said. You get into overdrive territory (typically 75% on a car radio) and distortion does get unbearable. I've had several decks all have similar mosfets in them. Even with proper settings and making sure there's no final distortion, you can still hear something odd at full volume. Also the heatsinks and power supply's are pretty pathetic on car radio's, as well I don't think these mosfets have enough surface area to properly dissipate heat especially at 50 watts. Nothing beats a dedicated 4 channel amplifier, I had a 400 watt class D tucked away in my center console. Not only did I not have distortion but it brought up the midbass and offered crisper high's, and that was at low volume.

I lost a lot of money on that LED.

I wonder if it is a real chip, or a counterfeit chip. China counterfeits so much, its always a gamble.

It's class D, that's all I need to know to find out if it's shit. I mean it can't be something else, a class AB would have to be larger than that

I 'm always waiting when the cat showing up during each your video. And i purchased mistakenly, instead purchase 4 input-4 output version for my micro bi-amp project, i purchase 2.1 version because it's so similar look a like. Moral story: dont make point-shopping without your glasses.. What a sucks.
