Man that brings back so many memeories. I still own all my Gamemaster series games including Broadsides and Boarding parties. Played the heck out of them all back in the eighties. Miss those days when I had more time. I do own the version you showed. Never played it. Still on my shelf. Maybe someday. Thanks Cody for bringing back wonderful memories. Your awesome.

I see comments ”it’s not a good game, but it’s fun”. Ridiculous statement. If game is fun then surely it’s good then. Many times I have been thinking that if i should do top-100 games list the number one game would probably be Love Letter because i have had fun times with it more than with any other games. Not very deep strategy game, but fun matters :)

The Euro-Socialist Pact invasion approach in this boardgame reminds me of my alternate history series Georgia Mix-Up where the Russian Federation invades the State of Georgia by mistake in 2008 and quickly expands the invasion through the Southeast. Ironically Atlanta which functions as occupational headquarters in my timeline happens to be an addable invasion zone for the Euro-Socialists.

I feel very much the same way -- it is not a great game and could have used some of the innovative euro and/or wargame mechanics that have developed since its original release; however, it still is playable, still fun and really invokes some nostalgia from growing up in the 80s . . . having said that, it is hard to forgive the deletion of KC (my boyhood home and the focus of "The Day After", which along with "Red Dawn" summed up, albeit in a relatively simplistic way, living during the later years of the Cold War) -- thank you for this trip down memory lane . . .

Why the hell would they not reprint this again? It sold well, still trades for pretty high prices, clearly there's demand... and this edition is just plain better than the original in nearly every possible way. Better balanced, easier on the eyes, and the custom dice make combat A LOT smoother & quicker!
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer Месяц назад
For this edition they made the mistake of messing with the story, and making the Americans the bad guys. It hurt sales during its initial print run.

I had both the MB & FFG versions (FFG made some minor but appropriate rules tweaks) and have fond memories of hours spent playing games with my brothers. The FFG version has nicer components, although I miss the Saddam Hussein clone on the MB cover. I also had Axis & Allies as well as Shogun (later renamed Samurai Swords), which were other titles in the original MB Gamemaster series (never got to play Conquest of the Empire, although I heard it was pretty decent). Thanks for the memories, Cody! 🖖

Happy to see you review this one. I owned this one as a teen in the 80s, got rid of it and then managed to find a still-shrink wrapped copy of the original on Ebay a few years back. In no way do I think it's a great game, but it is a good game that allows me to re-live some teenage nostalgia.

I like the game, but my last few gaming groups were too big to get it to the table much. It's a fine game if you have four people and an afternoon or evening to spend on it. Not that you asked for strategy tips, but in that shot at 3:45, the US player is fighting way too hard for the west coast. You should treat that like the eastern front in WWII: a fighting retreat to spread out the yellow player while you pick off isolated units (good use of extra zaps from the lasers) and use partisans to cut supply lines.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer

I think you need to fall back if you're the US - that's your best chance of winning. That's a bit of a criticism because I wish it would be more based on the context and situation. You also need to be in positions to win back a bunch of cities - without that, you're dead. You're correct, it's a legitimately good game with a fun theme. A lot of cool mechanics and theme that were revolutionary at the time it came out.

So this game could have been great IF someone had tweaked the rules. So if the dev had put out a FAQ or another edition making some obvious fixes, THEN and only then would the game be great? Ridiculous. If a game could be great by adding a few simple variant rules then its a great game. Because anyone can do that, not just the devs. There needs to be a space in game reviewing for the potential of variants. Noone goes into any depth there, not sure why.
