Here is a video of how I went about building an adapter plate to mate a VW 1.9l TDI engine to a Ford Ranger 5-speed transmission with a Vulcan bell-housing pattern. I don't have any really good and precise measuring tools, so I figured I'd make this all without them if I could. Here's my attempt - Part 1.

Yes but I don’t think I would use the ranger auto bc they aren’t great transmissions from what I have heard

Any chance you could point the way? I've been looking for the Lima 2.3 & Vulcan 4.0 but haven't found anything.

Not sure if you keep up on this anymore, but, really interested in doing this swap in my 94 3.0 5speed ranger. ANY info would be greatly appreciated

Not sure if you're still in market, but you can buy a premade adapter for the 3.0 and 4.0 to use stock transmission with a 1.9 TDI. It's spendy at $600, but for people who don't have proper tools, know-how, or time to manually do everything, it's nothing less than perfect.

A 2.3 M50D transmission does work.

Does it work better than the V6 bellhousing patterns?

Hey how thick of plexus glass are you using?
@RyanWithAviators
@RyanWithAviators 5 лет назад
I'd assume 1/4" because he was talking about the engine being spaced 1/4" from the trans with the finished adapter. I assume he would mock it up with plexiglass with the same thickness just for consistency. I know I would.

Would this work with a petrol engine? I think the VW petrol engine would be great for a hot rod.

+Chris Henniker Possibly. I am not sure if the VW Diesel and Gasoline engines share the same bellhousing. Seems to me that the process would be the same, though.

The bell housings are the exact same in all mk4 VW except the vr6

Why? Plenty of GOOD ford gas motors, not many small diesels. Short track racing, the fastest cars/engines are 2.3 ford but diesels? VW has a very good one that has good high revs.good longevity wrecking yards full of them= cheap used parts That's why people use them, not because of the VW badging or name.
