1971 saw what was possibly the biggest fire the Brigade has had to deal with in Long Eaton. Orchards five storey lace factory in Main Street was being used by Liptons as a tea packing factory. An intense blaze completely destroyed the building. Over 150 firemen from four brigades were called in with 22 pumps, four turntable ladders and two salvage tenders. The remains took three weeks to dampen down.

50 years on from me being a 21 year old fireman based in Chesterfield. We went on night duty at 6pm and were sent straight to Long Eaton to assist with the operation. The 100' Turntable Ladder had already been sent from Chesterfield, shortly after the start of the fire. Our crew were tasked with protecting printing machinery from water damage in a printing works next to the blaze. There were crews there from all over Derbyshire and after we had arrived, we heard of Dave Statham's heroic ladder rescue, for which he received the Brigade Gold Star Award for his bravery. Many say, that the entire crew of that ladder rescue should have been similarly recognised. Spent an entire 24 hours at the fire, returning to Chesterfield just in time for our next 15 hour night shift, when we spent most of the night at a haystack fire at a farm in Barlow. 39 hours continuous duty, so took a night's annual leave for the final night shift and one of the largest fires that I attended in my career.

I remember watching this happen at the time I lived in The Royal Berni Inn and I was aged 8. Blue Peter had just started. It was so hot the fire cracked my brother's bedroom window. I remembered it being spectacular but watching this video is shocking. So pleased no one was killed. The firemen were so brave. I also remember a tyre place burning down there shortly after that.

Biggest fire I attended in the Fire Service. I drove our Water Tender/Escape Ladder to it with our dayshift crew from Loughborough. The nightshift crew attended with our Water Tender. 3 members of that crew, on the flat roof of an adjacent building had a narrow escape when a gable wall collapsed towards them. A press photographer captured the moment on his camera.

Susan Hutchins (nee Dolby) I was working at The Long Eaton Advertiser when this happened. I was just walking away when it was on fire. They were very brave men.

My father David statham rescued a lady off the top of the building risking his own life He also had a gold star and we were all in the national papers

My Dad John Edwards worked at Liptons at the time of the fire. He had spoke to me about the fire. He had told me about how your Dad using the full extent of the turntable ladder to perform his rescues. Utter respect for your father..My dad and some work mates went back into the building to help some women. My dad badly cut his arm smashing a window to get to them. They all made their way out. A year later Dad went to London to receive the Queens commendation for bravery with 2 workmates. We were photographed for the local paper. I can't remember which one. Dear Claire God bless your Dad and firefighters past and present. Sadly my Dad passed 2012.My name is Ian Edwards and I am one of John's 4 sons.

I was there too Claire, and learned of your Dad's heroic rescue soon after we arrived. He was my Driving Instructor shortly afterwards.

Sadly, Dad is not alive to ask anymore, but I believe this was the first major fire he attended as a junior firefighter.

My utter respect to your Dad's memory. My dad worked at liptons and helped with 2 workmates rescue some women They got the Queens commendation for bravery. My Dad's name was John Edwards who sadly passed in 2012.God bless our dad's. My name is Ian Edwards

There were 7 men who came back into the factory. They lead 5 women to safety. I was one of them. What was your Grand dads name?

Lucy you are mistaken. Grandad received the Queens commendation off a government minister a year after the fire.

My name is Ian Edwards and I am one of John Edwards sons.Lucy is my niece. My dad and his workmates went back into the fire. Dad cut his arm in the process. He and the others rescued some women and helped them down. He and 2 of his workmates received the Queens commendation for bravery. Sadly Dad passed in 2012.I was 13 at the time of the fire.
