This video was posted in part to support the sale of the deck. It has now been sold to a very good new home!
I also wanted to take the time to explain how these kind of decks were used in the 1970s and 80s for overdubbing etc.

I have one (it's not for sale), in mint condition. I bought it new in the 1970s. It's a work of art and mechanical precision.

Thank you. There’s lots of vids on how to service and repair and no simply how to use and play with the Teac. Good fun. Why u selling you are having so much fun. I have the A3340s but love this one more. Remain child at heart.

Find me one Olly! I am running a vintage (circa mid 70s that I bought new!) Sony STR 7035 tuner, TA 1066 integrated amp. And a Sony SQD 2020 4 channel quadraphonic decoder. A 4 channel reel to reel would highlight my system perfectly! I do like the Teac A-3340! A very versatile machine!

Brilliant video man, cheers. I have this exact same unit, but mine functions differently, and im having trouble determining if its due to a broken part or not. The right tensioner arm that uses a microswitch to stop the reels and deactive the capstan on my machine only deactivates the capstan. For some reason on my machine, the reels will just continue to spin indefinitely after the tape has finished feeding, but the capstan will stop rolling. Any ideas what this could mean??? Thanks again!

I really appreciate your posting this. I have a 3440 and seem to be forever learning its many facets &/or complexities. If I had 2 3440's, could I use the second one as a 2 track master mix down recorder???????

You could, but it might make sense to mix down to a better quality medium. As with cassette tape recorders, the signal-to-noise ratio on TEAC's consumer line (including the 2340 & 3340 Models) is only 58 dB(!), i.e., lots of background noise, which only gets worse when you make a "recording of a recording." This (low-fi) was done industry-wide, intentionally, to protect "professionals" from home recording studio competition, and in particular, to prevent consumer pirating of corporate recordings. A similar low-fi approach was used in the 1990's when SONY first introduced the digital mini disc recorders . . .I was still into 4-track reels at that point and thought the minidisc would be the solution to my mix-down needs. Guess again. The 1st generation of m-discs had a sampling rate far below the standard 48k of a commercial CD.

@@daveschachne So you want the db's to be higher? The higher the db's the better the sound (clearer)?

@Kevlar I see. That is good to know. I have 5 rtr's a sony 788-4 (not working at this time) a teac x-3r, an akai 365d a pioneer 707 and a technics rs1500us that one is a two track but can play a recorded four track. Cheers

@Kevlar That deck was given to me. The guy said I am going to take it to the thrift store because it's not working so I said give it to me and I will try to fix it and if I can't I will take it to the thrift store. I had to change all the blue capacitors that are known to go bad and also had to invert the rubber accordions that control the tension arms. That was the first time I had seen one of those decks so I was hesitant to open it up and work on it but I figured, hey it was free so what do I have to loose. And I got lucky and it is now working.

@Kevlar I have the Sony 788-4 and that is a beautiful deck unfortunately right now it's not working. So I will need to open it up and see if I get lucky and can fix it. The problem is that when I press play nothing happens the ffwd and rew work

So in one word this machine is good mostly for the musicians. To buy this kind of four channel reel to reel machine is not a good idea for home use. Thank You.

What was the answer to this? looks like it's been removed. I was wondering why he chose to record to 1 and 3?

@@AJS421 Now that I own one of these I can tell you that in reality, you can record a stereo signal in any configuration. 1+2,1+3, 2+3, and so on. The problem will be to reproduce your recording in another stereo tape deck since channel left and channel right are just about the position on track one and track 3 on this machine. So you would have an overlapping signal if you can hear it at all.
